re: "official white house portraits"
no, they don't have "special status" at WIKIPEDIA. & please kindly show me the WP that says otherwise? Lx 121 (talk) 23:53, 6 January 2017 (UTC)
- Say for example Talk:Hillary_Clinton#photo, where a user asks about using a more "current" image rather than her Sec. of State photo, but this is declined as there is a preference for "official" images rather than just being new and current. That user there links to George Bush as another example of a similar image discussion. The same convention would follow for older presidents, to use an official portrait rather than some nattily-done, poor-quality daguerreotype or similar. You seem to claim that there should be an order of precedence that a photograph (regardless of quality) preempts a painting. That is to put it politely, silly. ValarianB (talk) 20:22, 10 January 2017 (UTC)
- none of that is Wikipedia Policy, or even a guideline. that is an opinion & decision in one discussion on one talk page. & the users there don't & cannot cite any policy to support the decision; it is merety a preference on the part of the persons in the discussion.
- &, as the hilly article is a biography of a living person, i would have supported updating the image; particularly as she subsequently ran for president in 2016.
- also; nobody in that discussion favoured using a PAINTING of her as lede image.
- still @ zero on finding wp to support your claim.
- as for "nattily done" & "poor quality daguerreotype", i'm not gong to go over that again, but why don't you read about the history of daguerreotypes, & how they are made, before you make unfounded opinions about them? daguerreotypes are actually extremely high-resolution images. i suspect you have never seen or handled a real one; i have.
- From what I've seen in my short time here, the project works by consensus, and rules and guides are applied with common sense. The common sense consensus appears to reject your proposals since you have had your edits turned back on several articles and that image policy discussion didn't go your way either. I don't see the need to continue this discussion on this talk page, so please let's make this the last input. Thanks. ValarianB (talk) 15:15, 12 January 2017 (UTC)

Please refrain from changing genres, as you did to The Stooges (album), without providing a source or establishing a consensus on the article's talk page first. Genre changes to suit your own point of view are considered disruptive. Thank you. Dan56 (talk) 19:26, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
Deletion fo sandbox
When I joined Wikipedia I got a message saying I could use my sandbox to experiment, so could you please just leave it be. It is little wonder that Wikipedia is in decline if this is how you treat new users. Since I joined I've had one edit changed with it being accused of vandalism, when that wasn't the case, and now this. It is little wonder that you have such trouble retaining editors. Chocolatebareater (talk) 21:15, 23 January 2017 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker)There was already a message on your talk page about why this sandbox copy of your article at AFD was not a good idea. Since the article is certain to be deleted, and there is no way to change what you have written that would make the material worth keeping I agree with ValarianB that there is no point in having the sandbox copy. I will blank it again. If you restore it again I will ask to have the sandbox deleted once the article is deleted. Meters (talk) 23:29, 23 January 2017 (UTC)
- The article is a bad idea, as many people have said so far. No need to keep another copy of it. ValarianB (talk) 12:42, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
Hi ValarianB, thank you for your edit. I really don't know how to react to this. He may have a point regarding this specific type of power source, but I don't really know how it plays into this project. --Gnom (talk) 18:00, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
- You're welcome. This person is obviously very passionate about this but also a bit misinformed as to impact and does not seem like he is a native English speaker. Makes it difficult to interact with. ValarianB (talk) 18:13, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
Hey there
My sister (like myself) grew up in western Vermont. She had to take classes to "suppress" her native accent to sound general american for voice overs. Also, if you listen to thatt sound clip, that is most certainly the vermont accent, which is not General American. I don't agree with Labov on this for that reason alone. Also, I'm not keen on letting one particular source be so much info for these things. Labov is cited over a dozen times for that article. Just my opinion on this. I'm not lying about my sister having to get rid of her western Vermont accent to do voice overs. SirUltimos (talk) 13:51, 10 February 2017 (UTC)
- I'm a Mainer, transplanted to Connecticut. Y'all sound the same. :) But really, if you think it is different then I won't remove it again but unless you find a source to support your own position, other editors may disagree. ValarianB (talk) 14:00, 10 February 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for responding. Any chance you can redo it? I don't edit wikiepdia so I don't want to seem like I'm destroying the page. Your a regular here. If another editor disagrees, I'll talk to them a bout it. There is a part later on in that article does state that the vermont accent is different, and I agree with that. I think Labov generalizes too much. Other sources say there are various splits in western new england english. Which is why I strongly disagree with Labov calling "western" New England GA. And again, what I said about my sister having to suppress her vermont accent. Thank you. SirUltimos (talk) 14:07, 10 February 2017 (UTC)
Rollbacker
I have granted the "rollbacker" permission to your account. After a review of some of your contributions, I believe you can be trusted to use rollback for its intended usage of reverting vandalism, and that you will not abuse it by reverting good-faith edits or to revert-war. For information on rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback and Wikipedia:Rollback feature. If you do not want rollback, contact me and I will remove it. Good luck and thanks. – Gilliam (talk) 14:40, 10 February 2017 (UTC)
- Sounds good, thanks. :) I like to look at Special:RecentChanges from time to time and pick off the obvious vandalised pages. ValarianB (talk) 14:44, 10 February 2017 (UTC)

Big Brother 19 (U.S.) Image
Hi ValarianB I saw your edit summary and I added an explanation as to why File:Big Brother 16 (U.S.) Logo.png can't be used on the article page at this time. ♪♫Alucard 16♫♪ 14:00, 29 June 2017 (UTC)
Gaslighting
'The Machinist' issue in 'In fiction' section is understandable and it was a mistake. The proper sentence might be that the principal character Trevor took his psychosis to be an effect of gaslighting. But the other example of 'Bipin Chowdhuryr Smritibhrom' by Satyajit Ray is a genuine example and the short story is quite famous in Bengali literature, while the author is a person with international reputation. According to Wikipedia's policy, citing regional literature is not exempted. Then how can this be an insignificant example? Rishi193 (talk) 20:33, 1 July 2017 (UTC)
- If Bipin Chowdhuryr Smritibhrom is historic and notable, than it should be easy to find a citation to it. If you make an assertion in a Wikipedia article, you have to give the reader information on where to find and verify it. ValarianB (talk) 15:32, 8 August 2017 (UTC)
Actually the issue is somewhat different. The story was not only immensely popular in Bengali literature, its English translation was included in the school syllabus of a well known board of India at one time. Several discussions on this story can be found in web, but they are mostly related to questions and answers for school students. I don't know whether they are reliable source or not.Rishi193 (talk) 15:35, 23 August 2017 (UTC)

- Not a reliable source; CBS.com is. Thank you for stating your intent to edit-war though, that will be an actionable comment once you are reported to WP:ANEW. Cheers! ValarianB (talk) 16:21, 6 July 2017 (UTC)
then how is her own instagram not reliable enough? pretty sure she knows as well as her sponsors know how old she is — Preceding unsigned comment added by Drewreliford (talk • contribs) 16:59, 6 July 2017 (UTC)
- And I am equally sure that the network that signed her to one of their top-line reality tv programs would know her age as well, which is why primary sources are not always reliable/acceptable. Make your case at Talk:Big_Brother_19_(U.S.)#Christmas_Abbot.27s_age, not here. ValarianB (talk) 17:09, 6 July 2017 (UTC)

DeAndre Harris
Thanks for letting me know that the article DeAndre Harris is being discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/DeAndre Harris. I appreciate that. I will contribute to the Articles for deletion page discussion. How long will the discussion remain open?Oceanflynn (talk) 23:30, 17 October 2017 (UTC)
- Generally 7 days, though an administrator can extend that if participation is light or there is a clear deadlock, and they feel that a few more days and a re-listing might attract more eyes. ValarianB (talk) 11:56, 18 October 2017 (UTC)

Where
Where was the consensus reached that you mentioned here?--MONGO 15:08, 3 November 2017 (UTC)
- Talk:Unite the Right rally, click the archived discussion box, and plug in "terrorist". There was essentially one single-focused editor "ScratchMarshall" who pushed again and again for the category removals, and was consistently and repeatedly rebuffed. Articles regarding the Arab-Israeli conflict
I noticed you reverted a number of articles edited by a blocked user. I haven't had time to look at all of them, but I've fact-checked the changes on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, Mandatory Palestine, Peel Commission and Template:Palestinian territory development and I now feel comfortable to undo the rollbacks on them. - That's a tough one, he's certainly not an entertainer. There really isn't a word yet coined for this sort of virally-famous-for-being-a-racist phenomenon found in the alt-right, and it's doubly complicated when you have people oppose it because it is too controversial e.g. (white supremacist) and those who oppose it because it isn't the harsher of the available terms. Would it be possible to just move the article to his real name? I mean, these are just regular people with internet handles, not superhero identities. ValarianB (talk) 14:42, 29 November 2017 (UTC)

Sean Hannity
I am not watering the information regarding Jake Tapper down, I am trying to ensure accuracy. Sean Hannity repeated the words of Jake Tapper, but in a misleading way without the qualifying text. Hannity did not explicitly lie though. Oscar248 (talk) 13:39, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
