ITN recognition for Kevin Beattie
On 17 September 2018, In the news was updated with an item that involved the article Kevin Beattie, which you nominated. If you know of another recently created or updated article suitable for inclusion in ITN, please suggest it on the candidates page. The Rambling Man (talk) 08:45, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
Your GA nomination of Kevin Beattie
The article Kevin Beattie you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Kevin Beattie for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already been on the main page as an "In the news" or "Did you know" item, you can nominate it to appear in Did you know. DYK for List of international goals scored by Romelu Lukaku
On 18 September 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article List of international goals scored by Romelu Lukaku, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Belgian footballer Romelu Lukaku (pictured) has scored two international hat-tricks, but only one is recognised by FIFA? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/List of international goals scored by Romelu Lukaku. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, List of international goals scored by Romelu Lukaku), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

- That's tough on Lukaku. They changed the rules on subs then? They used to be unlimited in friendlies - I remember Sven changing the entire team at half-time in an England friendly once.--Pawnkingthree (talk) 15:21, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
- It was tough, but FIFA is, well, you know, FIFA. But at least this DYK smashed it. Perhaps some clues there for the "cookie cutter" DYKers who get around 1000 hits. The Rambling Man (talk) 18:26, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
- Sometimes a POTD blurb can hit the jackpot as well...[1] Although there may be something about football and bombers that appeals to our readership more than other topics. — Amakuru (talk) 19:28, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
- POTD is usually quite popular I think. It gets a huge amount of main page space and is ordinarily a half-decent picture. I'm just gloating because I put literally zero effort into a DYK nomination and got shitloads of pageviews. Boom. Interesting to a broad audience? I thank you.... Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy
Hi Rambles. Hope you're well. I spotted your post at WT:CRIC and have a few comments/suggestions to help improve the article. Should the Recipients/List of winners sections be two sections, or is it worth merging them together? Also, under the selection paragraph, it refers to the 10 Test-playing nations. Do Ireland and Afghanistan now get a vote on this, or are they not included? I think that's it for now, hope that helps, and good luck in getting it to a FL. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 08:53, 25 September 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Gunslut, I really haven't spent too long looking in detail at the stuff outside the table. Once that's in place I can have a better look at the surrounding prose. I'm intending to write about each recipient in some detail to allude to why they were elected, so that section should be quite sizeable by the time I finish... Any help gratefully received. Cheers. DYK for List of international goals scored by Alexis Sánchez
On 3 October 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article List of international goals scored by Alexis Sánchez, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that despite Alexis Sánchez's seven goals in qualification, Chile failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/List of international goals scored by Alexis Sánchez. For your work at WP:ERRORS2, and for your creative initiative in starting the page, which has led to significant user input there. Plus, it takes time and effort to weed out potential errors in various articles that may be missed by others. I've disagreed with some of your stances in the past, regarding DYK on the Main page and other matters, but overall, thinking outside of the box, as has occurred with creating WP:ERRORS2, can be a good thing. North America1000 20:33, 19 October 2018 (UTC) |
- Hey, thanks for that. It's surprised me how effective it's been, and once I've started keeping tabs on just how many issues make it through, it's made me proud to offer the service! Cheers. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:46, 19 October 2018 (UTC)
- You're welcome. Yeah, far from being some gripe page, various errors have actually been fixed. I wish people would consistently delineate where the fixes occur, though, either to the article, the Main page content, or both. North America1000 21:03, 19 October 2018 (UTC)

Your tech skills way exceed mine (a hamster's tech skills exceed mine, but never mind) - are you able to get anything out of Source 1? --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 12:02, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
- Nope, that's an odd one, it's still live and yet no text with the headline. As you say, nothing at archive.org and Google's own cache is similarly unhelpful... The Rambling Man (talk) 12:13, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
- OK, we'll skip it. Even the quote alone would be terrific, but the page doesn't make it clear it's from Beattie. --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 12:50, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
- There's probably more in his autobio but the only copy I could see on t'internet was going for around 50 quid... The Rambling Man (talk) 12:53, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

Source 7 is a disaster. Luckily, quite a bit of it is also in the Times obit. I'll try to find some time to get on here and sort it out. I might also try dropping the paper a line and seeing if they can fix it. --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 22:35, 31 October 2018 (UTC)
- I suspect some of that I could also dredge up from the "book" I have, IIRC some of that stuff was mentioned in the earlier sections... I'm off sick today so in between recuperation sessions, I'll take a look to see what I can do, assuming we never get source 7 back online. The Rambling Man (talk) 07:57, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
Rework possibilities
- In later life, Beattie reminisced, "There would be times I would have nothing to eat for two or three days, unless my dad won a game of dominoes at the pub and got the fish and chips in. ... Even at that age, football was a release for me."[7]
- --> " In later life, Beattie reminisced, "There was often only food on the table when Dad had backed a winning horse, or else won a game of darts, or dominoes down at his local pub." (Finch, p. 11)
- His father was also an alcoholic: Beattie reflected, "I didn't get on very well with my dad, if he couldn't have a drink, it was trouble ... I would hear the rows, hide under the bed and put my fingers in my ears."[7]
- --> His father was also an alcoholic: Beattie reflected, "Dad was a great man when he was sober – when he would be kind and thoughtful ... However, when he had been drinking, he was a different animal altogether. He would want to take on everyone." (Finch, p. 10)
- Beattie supported his local football team, Carlisle United, and idolised the players.[7]
- --> "Being a local lad I was of course an ardent Carlisle United fan. I would have loved to have played for the club and although I couldn't afford to see too many games, I always scoured the newspapers for the match reports and often hung around Brunton Park, just to soak up the atmosphere or catch an autograph or two." (Finch, p. 20)
- As a child, he once stood in the rain and managed to get the autographs of Allan Ross and Chris Balderstone, but felt "heartbroken" when Hughie McIlmoyle appeared and said, "I haven't got time, son. I'll get my hair wet", and "ran off. ... even then I thought, 'If I ever become a footballer, I'll never refuse to sign an autograph'."[7]
- --> "One of my heroes ... was the club's star striker Hughie McIlmoyle ... I remember joining a group of other fans after one game in the pouring rain, in the hope that I could get his signature. After hanging around for an age, Hughie eventually emerged ... but brushed past me and brusquely told me he was in a rush." Beattie was "devastated" and resolved to never turn down autograph hunters. (Finch, p. 20)
- Now earning a wage, Beattie tried to help support... [7]
- --> Can't replace this directly. I have the quote that he earned £5 a week (Finch, p. 35) but not about sending stuff back to his folks until later. Within a couple of pages, he's earning £25 per week (+£10 win bonus). At this point he says "I was also able to help my parents at home and began sending them some money each week ... So I became extremely upset when I found out that Dad was spending the money that I had been sending home on drink and Mum was going without. Not only that but I also found out that his drinking had got worse and he had started knocking Mum around." (Finch p. 36)

Lots of material lifted from Kevin Beattie's autobiography. Just wondering what permission you have to use this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.249.184.79 (talk • contribs)
- Such as? The Rambling Man (talk) 15:18, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
Such as most of the page... You then slag the book off, "full of errors" and erroneously list an earlier book that was printed as being his autobiography whilst lifting endless lines and information from another book, you fail to mention existed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.249.184.79 (talk • contribs)
- Not at all. Besides, the biography to which you refer is so badly written, with plenty of errors, that I had to independently verify most of it using other sources. It was far from fun. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The Rambling Man (talk) 15:28, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
If the book - and you clearly don't know the difference between a biography and autobiography - is so badly written, then why rip off huge chunks of it ? Either way, you have no permission to use any of it, so remove all references now. The matter has already reported to Wikipedia, as will your lousy attitude. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.249.184.79 (talk • contribs)
- Not at all, the way in which we refer to the biography is completely aligned with Wikipedia standards. Every error (and there were plenty) I found, I either discarded from the Wikipedia biography if I could not corroborate the claims elsewhere, or I fact-checked (something the author clearly had never heard of doing) and used alternative sources for each claim. I look froward to hearing the results of your "report to Wikipedia" and can assure you that my "lousy attitude" is already very well known. Thanks for dropping by! The Rambling Man (talk) 15:36, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
Text is copyrighted - and you clearly don't know what that means. But will...
I am sure your lousy attitude is known. It's a shame your name isn't - hiding behind a pseudonym. Why not reveal your name for all to see? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.249.184.79 (talk • contribs)
- Please, until you familiarise yourself with how Wikipedia works, I'm afraid I have no more time to chew the fat with you. Oddly, you're the completely "anonymous" one here, so I'm not sure why you think you're doing by using threats. By the way, we actively seek out and ban people who level legal threats, is that what you're trying to do here "But will...? I wonder why it's of such interest to you to claim copyright infringement of such a poorly written book, I really do? The Rambling Man (talk) 15:45, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
I wonder why it's of such interest to you to claim copyright infringement of such a poorly written book, I really do? - The answer to that is out of respect to a great footballer and guy, who this book is about and who had a huge input into the book and who also approved and was very happy with it. He's also just passed away in case you hadn't noticed...Your jaundiced, uneducated, opinions are worthless and I still see you haven't put out your name. When will that be forthcoming? Why don't you look inside the jacket of the "badly written book" and see that it can't be reproduced without the permission of the author/ publisher - permission you don't have. Maybe you should familiarise yourself with copyright law and also learn some manners. Or don't they teach you that in your pseudonym virtual Wikipedia reality? Formal complaint about you and antics sent to Wikipedia already... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.249.184.79 (talk • contribs)
- I've already mentioned that you need to familiarise yourself with how Wikipedia uses third party sources, and nothing in the Beattie article infringes that guideline, nor any claim of copyright. I'm sorry you feel so cut up about this, the reason we've been expanding Beattie's article is precisely because we have so much respect for him. You may not have realised how poor his article was before he died and how much more comprehensive it now is. Again, as I already mentioned, I look forward to hearing more about your complaint, my "antics" and confirmation that you are threatening me with legal action (although it's not clear why an anonymous IP would even think they could actually do that!!). Cheers for now! The Rambling Man (talk) 15:56, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
Hello, IP editor. I wrote a huge chunk of the article and don't have a copy of the book. Furthermore, a whacking great lump of the article was written before TRM had a copy of the book. The parts that were taken from the book are properly attributed and there's no plagiaristic copying of screeds of text. There are about 50 sources cited in the article that aren't Finch's book. I think that should cover it. --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 15:57, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

- Looking at the IP's history, and their ongoing implied threats against you, I didn't see anything positive coming out of that IP for a long time. Catie Munnings Wikipedia page titles
Hi - I’m contacting you as you were the last to edit Catie’s page. When you now google Catie Munnings the Wikipedia tittles her as Catie Munnings British television presenter. Please could you change this so when she is googled it says Catie Munnings British rally driver? She is actually a rally driver who has been given her own tv show - she’s not a television presenter!
Many thanks Tracey Munnings RallyMum1 (talk) 18:32, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) That's based on how Google's algorithms work, rather than strictly on what is found on Wikipedia. If you look at the bottom corner of the box on Google, there is a 'Feedback' option. I would suggest using that. The Wikipedia article quite factually states that she is "a British rally driver and children's television presenter", so no change is necessary there. Harrias talk 19:25, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
- Indeed, that's absolutely the case I'm afraid. For what it's worth Tracey, your daughter's show keeps my kids very happy, so thank her on my behalf even if we can't directly help you here. The Rambling Man (talk) 19:50, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
To Rambling Man - Catie is in the middle of securing sponsorship for her 2019 season - the incorrect title she’s been given every time her page is edited is having a detrimental effect. RHcosm has been helping me try to fix the issue. She’s a British Rally Driver not a tv presenter and needs to be portrayed as a Rally Driver. Thank you Tracey Munnings RallyMum1 (talk) 08:47, 3 November 2018 (UTC)

Will you be running for ArbCom this year?
Make a difference. 86.132.122.0 (talk) 16:11, 4 November 2018 (UTC)
- Well it was such a blast last time round, nothing quite like a series of character assassination attempts, but also terribly gratifying to see hundreds and hundreds of people voting for me. I think it was the offer of free pizza which swung it for me. In all honesty, Arbcom have pretty much become a background anonymous group of nobodies this year, which is a good thing. Nothing of any note seems to be even worthy of considering chasing, and anyone running this time would be doing it simply for hat collection purposes. But hey, let's see who "runs" (i.e. leaves it to the last minute to avoid scrutiny, then leap in with cabal backing!). The Rambling Man (talk) 17:39, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
