Hi. Great to see you're working on this Sub-Dean's article. However, the red link at Dean and Chapter of Westminster that you changed was pointed to William Carnegie (priest) because I had done the research and discovered that he was called William Carnegie: William was his given name, Harltey a middle name and Carnegie his surname: e.g. "William and Mary Carnegie" That's why I'll be reinstating the red link to Wm C. (priest) and encouraging you, when you create the article, to create it there (per WP:NCWC.) Thanks. Dan BD 11:51, 18 August 2014 (UTC) |

Incidentally, Beckhardt's photo was misidentified as Hermann Gilly, so I removed it from the Gilly article. However, as Gilly never flew a Siemens-Schuckert D.IIInor had a personal insignia of a swastika, it is obviously a (poor) photo of Beckhardt.
I hope you will post these, as I seem to be moderately hopeless at the task.

Please remember that you are "indefinitely prohibited from uploading images or other media files to the English Wikipedia." (from your Wikipedia:Editing restrictions). Your upload of a new version of File:Boelckeo.JPG is a violation of that restriction. Fram (talk) 14:58, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
- Take it to Arbitration, I do not see adjusting the contrast of an existing image as a violation. Thank you for your concern. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 15:20, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
- I have no ambition to get you blocked for this. I don't think it is a smart move to test the boundaries of your restrictions though. Doing such things too often or too blatantly will get you blocked again, and for a longer time, and also reduce your chances of getting the restrictions lifted or modified. Fram (talk) 15:32, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
- Arbitration enforcement is not meant to be a punishment, it is designed to remedy a specific problem, which was uploading questionable content. If content is already vetted, and I adjust the contrast, it is not a violation of that restriction. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 15:37, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
- No, our policies are meant to prevent copyright violations. Restrictions are meant to save people the effort of having to check every edit an editor makes to see whether it violates our policies. "You are not allowed to upload questionable content" (or "to link to copyright violations", and so on) are policies which apply to everyone. "You are not allowed to upload any files" is a restriction which is much more strict, and which only applies to you. Claiming that if an upload (or article creation, or whatever) doesn't violate our policies, it should be allowed, is ignoring your restrictions. Fram (talk) 15:45, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
- Then take it to arbitration, so it can be made clearer. I can see that it is bothering you greatly, so have it cleared up. I do not see it as a potential copyright violation. You certainly are the Javert of Wikipedia. So please take it to arbitration. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 15:57, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
- Please keep your personal attacks to yourself. If I thought this was a copyright violation, you would have been at arbitration enforcement. I said that it was a restriction violation. I can't help you if you can't see the difference between those two. Fram (talk) 22:23, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

- Comparing people to fictional characters who are described in the novel as "a fanatic" and "[he] was to be pitied, as is every ignorant man who triumphs." and by critics as "He is "one of the most tragic legalists in Western literature" and "the consummate legalist"." is a personal attack. That "[he] finds himself unable to reconcile his life's work pursuing criminals with the nobility and justice shown him by the man he thought was a criminal, and takes his own life by jumping off a bridge into the river Seine." (as our article describes it) only makes it worse. Fram (talk) 08:00, 21 November 2013 (UTC)
- You do seem to me to be a somewhat fanatical legalist. Fanatical in watching my every edit. Legalistic in declaring that altering the contrast of an existing image is a violation of the ban and that restoring someone else's edit is a copyright violation. You are looking for a "gotcha" moment to get me permanently blocked, I would say the moniker is apt. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 03:16, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

The article Carl Andrew Capasso has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Classic BLP1E - his only real claim to notability stems from his alleged involvement in one political scandal
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. *** Crotalus *** 15:10, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

It is best to specify the exact Web page where you found the images, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image files themselves. Please update the image descriptions with URLs that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

Hi Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ), this is a courtesy message to inform you that a clarification request regarding you has been closed and archived. The arbitrators are in agreement that if a user moves articles created by yourself to mainspace that user takes full responsibility for the content they moved, so should ensure that the content meets all Wikipedia policies and guidelines before moving it. The arbitrators are also in agreement that if you wish to have new articles in mainspace you appeal your ban to the Committee. For the Arbitration Committee, Callanecc (talk • contribs • logs) 05:37, 23 November 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Richard. I think they are hinting that you should apply for a modification of the conditions of your topic ban. We're into the elections now, so I'm not sure whether the good play is to go fast on this so that the current Arbs, who understand the case and are up to speed, can make a quick ruling; or whether you should wait until after the election and try your luck with a group with some new people and new attitudes. I guess that's ultimately your call. Let me know if I can assist you in any other way. best regards, —Tim /// Carrite (talk) 05:50, 23 November 2013 (UTC)
- Where do I go to appeal for a lift on the ban? Where is the page to start an appeal? --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 05:55, 23 November 2013 (UTC)
- Sorry, I haven't watched this page... I think the appeal goes to where we just were: Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Clarification_and_Amendment. They actually could have done it at the same time, I think, but for whatever reason they just wanted to deal with the question Fram posed. As you have no doubt seen there is a new crop coming in and it looks like a fair number of reasonable people. I'd wait until January before making a new appeal. Good to see you racking up the new pieces; that will give you something to show when you make your appeal. Hope you have a good Christmas, best regards as always. —Tim /// Carrite (talk) 07:24, 16 December 2013 (UTC)

The article Senator McNichols has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Not only shuold the page creator here not be creating any pages (as he has an editing restriction against those), this disambiguation shouldn't exist. There was no (redlinked) senator Willam J. McNichols, there was a senator William J. McNichol (without the final S) who served from 1919 to 1926.

John Lane Gardner
Hi Richard Arthur Norton, This is a courtesy notice to let you know that the John Lane Gardner article which you created has been nominated for deletion because it seems to be copy-pasted from one source (acute close paraphrasing) and relies almost entirely on that one source and because another article was created, John L. Gardner (brigadier general), using a more descriptive and conventional title which utilizes several sources and offers more extensive coverage. (I had created the newer article not knowing the former existed.) Also, using a person's full name in the title of a biography isn't usually done unless the person was known as such (e.g. John Wilkes Booth). A merge was originally proposed but the John Lane Gardner article only duplicates in small measure what already exists in the other article. Hope this meets with your approval. -- Gwillhickers 17:49, 22 December 2013 (UTC)

Your recent editing history at Saturday Night Live shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. Being involved in an edit war can result in your being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly.
To avoid being blocked, instead of reverting please consider using the article's talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. See BRD for how this is done. You can post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection. Hey Fellow Rutgers alum! I see that you uploaded photos and attended to the entry for Rev. Hardenbergh at findagrave.com. Is it possible you would upload the photos of his gravestone so they can be used on his article? Many thanks. --ColonelHenry (talk) 18:10, 19 January 2014 (UTC)
- Strike that, I see now that Lee Irons uploaded those images at findagrave.com.--ColonelHenry (talk) 18:11, 19 January 2014 (UTC)
- I did have photos there, but Findagrave removed all but one as "redundant". They left one slightly out-of-focus one that I didn't like, and removed. I can ask Lee Irons to release them under cc-2.0-by but when the author and uploader don't match they tend to get deleted anyway despite an OTSR letter. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 19:27, 19 January 2014 (UTC)

I just wrote this article for the German WP [1] and it turns out, that he cannot have died in WWI, because he won a race in 1921. --Nicola54 (talk) 16:33, 1 February 2014 (UTC)
- Excellent research. I will add the same note you wrote to the English version. I write all my articles based on the photos that are released to Flickr each Friday.
- I see. I am an expert in the history of cycling :) Most of my articles are about this topic.
- Anyway, I saw that you wrote articles about Gus and John Lawson. Iver indeed was the most succesful of the brothers, and there is an article about him, too: [2]. --Nicola54 (talk) 17:05, 1 February 2014 (UTC)
- Excellent research. I will add the same note you wrote to the English version. I write all my articles based on the photos that are released to Flickr each Friday.
- I was talking to someone and they told me they were related to these three brothers, but I had never heard of them, so I added what I could find. I had also been writing on polo players, because the images from the Library of Congress released to Flickr have so many polo pictures from 1910-1915. I am blocked from moving new articles into the main space, but you can move my article with the move button after checking it over for copyright infringement. That way you can link the German version to the English version and add what you know to the English version. You have to use the move button and not copy and paste. Reminder to administrators: In March 2010, ArbCom adopted a procedure prohibiting administrators "from reversing or overturning (explicitly or in substance) any action taken by another administrator pursuant to the terms of an active arbitration remedy, and explicitly noted as being taken to enforce said remedy, except: (a) with the written authorization of the Committee, or (b) following a clear, substantial, and active consensus of uninvolved editors at a community discussion noticeboard (such as WP:AN or WP:ANI). If consensus in such discussions is hard to judge or unclear, the parties should submit a request for clarification on the proper page." Image metadata issues: Lady Aitken
In 2010, you uploaded this image to en.wiki (it's since been moved to Commons), stating that it was Penelope, Lady Aitken. You also stated that the photo had been taken "circa 1915 [between ca. 1910 and ca. 1915]".
Penelope, Lady Aitken, was born in 1910 (and only married William Aitken in 1938). That photo is of an adult woman. Either it's not a photo of Penelope, Lady Aitken, or it's not from "circa 1915" (or, I suppose, neither). If we take the Library of Congress at their word re: the date, that also rules out Violet, Lady Aitken; might it be Gladys Henderson Aitken, Lady Beaverbrook (wife of Max Aitken, Lord Beaverbrook)? DS (talk) 13:08, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
- Actually, yeah -- I've examined some other photos of Gladys Henderson Aitken (née Gladys Drury Henderson), and I'm pretty sure that's her. I'm removing it from the article about Penelope. DS (talk) 13:34, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

Burials in/at Rock Creek Cemetery
Hey... the category Category: Burials at Rock Creek Cemetery includes all the relevant article pages, it seems that the empty category Category: Burials in Rock Creek Cemetery should be decategorized and speedy deleted. Is there a reason not to do this? - Tim1965 (talk) 22:05, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
- I think that is why we have category redirects "buried in" vs "buried at" is very confusing as to which one to use. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 22:14, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

Curtiss pic
I am not going into battle on this one, only to say beware of repetition (and I can be accused of the same), the new pic is clear and good quality, but for the sake of variety the previous one was good and did not seem to be doing any harm, the new one is a crop of the great shot further down the page.81.149.141.199 (talk) 18:48, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

Richard, I'm not sure why you are messing with the obsessives at Commons... I upload images directly to En-WP with a { { keep local } } template attached. - I have been blocked from adding photos to Wikipedia. I can see why the Library of Congress partnered with Yahoo and Flickr rather than Wikimedia. Yet, about 1 in 10 that I add gets deleted. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 04:47, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
