Revision as of 15:14, 28 January 2023
- An editing respite
- Something useful: Microwave an ear of corn for four minutes, with the husk left on. If two ears, double it to eight minutes. You'll see what I mean when you peel off the husk and eat the thing. You'll thank me later.
- Now you know: Saverland v Newton
- Remembering five of the last eight Earthlings to travel to the Moon, four of whom were murdered soon after their return.
- Maybe my best geek edit: A five cushion bank shot italicizing Star Trek and Buffy the Vampire Slayer links on Wikipedia's Klingon language page.
- An IP upon realizing that birds are dinosaurs, and a related edit to honor our dinosaur brothers and sisters.
- Write on!: Don't kick the Ouija board, which may result in Hillary v. Gandhi, Obama, et al..
- An IP's inadvertent poetically sexist edit, which they quickly corrected
- Perhaps my best one-word edit (although...)
- Ready for a trip to check out the size of the Solar System? No small children or animals on board please, and keep your arms and stuff where you can see them: If the Moon were only 1 Pixel (web based scroll map scaled to the Moon being, well, 1 pixel)
- A sci-fi short story plot (dibs)
If you've never seen...
. . .Veiled Christ, a statue in Naples, Italy, depicting a knobbly-kneed Christ in the tomb, maybe click the image two or three times to enlarge it. This almost unbelievable 1753 sculpture ("how'd he do that?"), carved from one piece of marble, has one of the only two Wikipedia article's which have to prove, with sources, that the topic was not the work of an alchemist (Anatomical machines, the second topic - exhibited at the same site). Step right up, and don't miss the modern looking couch, the two pillows with tassels, or the crown of thorns and other torture things down by the feet. All of that carved from the same block of marble. Then literally a few steps away from Veiled Christ sits another "how'd he do that?" piece also carved from a single block of marble (or created by alchemy).
One of life's pleasures
Watching Secretariat's 1973 Triple Crown races in order while knowing three things: 1) both his trainer and jockey finally realized, before the last race, that their horse could run at full speed from start to finish, 2) although drastically held back in his first two runs, Secretariat still holds the fastest time in all three Triple Crown races, and 3) Sham, the horse Secretariat trashed like a dancing bear in the first race - the Kentucky Derby - still holds the Derby record for the second fastest time.
Here's the Kentucky Derby...holds him back...holds him wayyyy back, then the Preakness...holds him back, holds him back, and finally...the Belmont "he is moving like a tre-men-dous machine".
Possible best vandal edits in the categories of...
- ...Best romantic edit, edit per topic, edit per user name, edit by a single-edit user, and the winner of the 2017 "Shakespearean dramatic romantic tragic tale in six words" Heisman
- July 7, 2022: an IP proposes marriage on the same page, the probable winner of the first category above. Wikipedians have a romantic side, even the bots, so nobody reverted until I did after two hours with a note saying it should be enough time, and wished the editor luck. Possibly unique on Wikipedia, and on such a good page for it, this would make a fine film scene - Hallmark, are you listening?
This one time at band camp I vandalized a page
The docents ask people: "Find the cat". Letting the coolness of it lead me to break my oath as a Wikipedian, I now self-identify as a vandal.
Always interesting
See and listen to Wikipedia edits as they occur. Designed by Stephen LaPorte and Mahmoud Hashemi of hatnote.com, the link was copied from a user page, don't remember where, but deservedly displayed on quite a few as well as having its own article. Just who is making all this noise? Well...
...the size of our stadium
Here is another user's subpage about how many Wikipedians can dance on the head of a pin.

Talk:Niece and nephew#Two generations???. A huge error has been prominent in the short lead of 'Niece and nephew' since March 2020, almost two years and nine months ago. The question "Why?" could qualify as a subject of a college thesis. It stayed uncorrected while 576,135 readers purposely came to the page, and if anyone noticed they didn't bother to correct it or tell anyone on Wikipedia, until an editor pointed it out on the talk page today. Fascinating on several levels. Randy Kryn (talk) 03:37, 11 December 2022 (UTC)

- If it isn't working, it may be because you have to manually pick the element you want blocked - usually it's by clicking the adblocker icon. LilianaUwU (talk / contribs) 11:32, 27 December 2022 (UTC)

Happy New Years! (and civil rights FAC)
Hi Randy, I see that you are one of the leading members of the CRM WikiProject (who are still active). I was wondering if you would be able to review my FAC, the Ole Miss riot of 1962. I figure it needs just one more solid review before promotion, and, through 2023, I hope to rehaul and promote more CRM articles, particularly the Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and the Little Rock Nine. If you don't have the time/energy, no worries. And, of course, Happy New Years! ~ HAL333 23:17, 31 December 2022 (UTC)
- Hello HAL333, and Happy New Year. I've never done a feature review and the format seems unusual to me (editors who find mistakes don't fix them but just list them, seems counterproductive), but looked at the page and it seems fine and I'm sure it'll pass muster. Rosalinde von Ossietzky-Palm
I think, Randy, I've now put together a sufficiently detailed biography of Rosalinde von Ossietzky-Palm. Although she is frequently referred to as Rosalinda (probably from Swedish influence), her name appears to be Rosalinde and I have altered things accordingly. I find that reverting the actions of other editors often leads to unfortunate misunderstandings and conflicts. I will therefore not attempt to add the article to List of peace activists but would appreciate your reconsidering its inclusion. It seems to me that a Jewish woman who has been awarded two German peace prizes deserves recognition.--Ipigott (talk) 11:17, 8 January 2023 (UTC)

A request
Hi Randy. I know you and I have talked in the past about the situation with Awolf58, and I've gotten the impression we take positions that are roughly different sides of the same coin—that he's a promising editor who's gotten himself into trouble and should learn to stay out of it. I see that across his past few accounts, he's sent you pings regarding his desire to create a biography of you, and you've responded to those pings with feedback. I understand that, from your perspective, you are helping someone create content. However, as far as policy is concerned, this is someone who was duly banned by the community; and while WP:PROXYING has an allowance for content that an editor in good standing has independent reasons for making
, in this case it would be WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY for you to make any of these edits in yourself—which as you may know, while not strictly forbidden, is strongly discouraged, and I don't think was the sort of thing the community had in mind when establishing that exception to WP:BANREVERT.
Now, per WP:NOTCOMPULSORY, I can't compel you to report Awolf sox when you come upon them, but could I ask that, if you do get pinged by some newer account looking to biographize you, you simply ignore it? I have seen other valued content creators stray across the line from "permissibly looking the other way with sox" to "impermissibly helping sox" and get in trouble for it, and I don't want to see that happen here. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 21:40, 14 January 2023 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks Tamzin, I'll stop discussing any of the bio stuff, he'll understand that and it makes Wikipedia policy sense. I think we both assume that admins either watch my pings and edits to newish user pages, or at least check them periodically, so when he writes to me he already assumes that particular account will be banned. I realize that his bio page about me could not be published under his accounts, as it would be deleted if authored alone, but he has gotten it pretty right (although with a few major mistakes and a joke or two), so the only way it would be published is if someone else took it on, double-checked the sources and the text for original research, years, and emphasis, and put it up for new article review if they thought it had a chance of passing. The main reason and point of adding a bio page seems accurate, that this Kryn guy, as an amateur historian and with the help of a couple major historians (although much of the collab he mentions between myself and Garrow occurred when Garrow, as a volume editor, used one of my papers and allowed a new addendum), further spotlighted the Civil Rights Movement deeds and clarified the pivotal importance of James Bevel into academic view and academic literature. The editor (and fellow Wikipedian) recognized this, and in good faith believes that doing so is notable. In any case, he put together a not-too-bad page, and it surprised me that some of the data was sourceable. But I'll stop discussing it with them, thanks for putting up some playing field limits. Wikipedia alternatives
With the abrupt ban of User:Chinakpradhan and the resulting excesses of administrative actions such as the indiscriminate reversion of good edits, you might be interested in trying out Justapedia or Encycla to put useful contents that otherwise fall afoul of gentrifying Wikipedia standards and pursuant to the adage of not putting many eggs in one basket. The former is made by Wikipedian User:Atsme and is currently in an invite-only beta. Here's hoping that you and the rest can stay clear of the ugly meta aspect of Wikipedia; after all there are too many stories on Wikipediocracy, Wikipedia Review and Wikipediasucks.co about those. 2A01:8640:12:1:0:0:38A:C0C7 (talk) 06:31, 25 January 2023 (UTC)
Similar but confusing user name
I think I want to set this confusion straightened out here. This, I'm guessing seems to be a different person instead of you. The Milky Way page seems to have both the similar names in today's edits made, which is how I've noticed them. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 16:34, 25 January 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for checking in Iggy the Swan, yes, a different person although I had previously linked the name to my user page as a common misspelling. He's copied my talk page which I reverted about a dozen times but there it is. Sort of hounds my edits, which is why similar page edits show up. I'll take it in good faith, although he often likes to stretch the bounds of good faith. If he starts following your edits expect user:Iggy the Eagle or something (kidding) (or not). Randy Kryn (talk) 16:39, 25 January 2023 (UTC)
- It happens to many other users as well, no surprises to be honest. Similar user names to me include: [1] and [2] who are different to me. I did wonder when the misspelled account similar to yours was created and noticed an active user page then, your reply in the first sentence says it all.
