Self promotion
Peter, in your few days on wikipedia, it looks like the vast majority of your edits are additions of links to your own writings in your own web directory, on a service that likes to display pop-up ads. This is very unlike the kind of contribution and collaboration that builds a good wikipedia. It is officially frowned on to put so much of your own stuff; if it's important, someone else should notice and link it. I reverted one when it popped up an ad on me, but I intend to revert some more. It would be better if you'd remove them yourself and start over on a more productive path here. Dicklyon 22:23, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
I see you've also created a number of new articles. This is definitely the right way to go, but make them complete enough to stand on their own. Linking your own stuff from your own new article about concepts you invented is definitely going to get you over the line on WP:NOR, WP:POV and other WP:RULES; see also WP:5P and WP:NOT. Dicklyon 23:03, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
Enthusiasm
Thanks for the remarks, I will take care not to break the rules, I have been too entusastic ... Over the years I have written several pages on a wide variety of topics, which are also linked to from other sites, so I did not mean adding them to Wikipedia as self-promotion. I did not know that it is forbidden to link to whatever text one has written, regardless of its value for the topic?
The pop-up ads are Google-ads on non-Wikipedia pages, is this an infringement of Wikipedia policies?
Starting articles: I should add the "stub"-remark, because I am afraid to break copyright rules when adding text. I should also insert the remark "needs attention".
One of the issues I read on Wikipedia is that it is "not done" to write un-referenced articles, so I start with providing references to provide a clue to (preferably peer-reviewed) sources. As copyright infringements are removed, it is extremely important to be careful when writing a text.
I apologize for the inconvenience caused by my lack of experience and over-enthusiastic referencing Pvosta 15:23, 11 September 2006 (UTC).

Is it forbidden to link to pages one has written regardless of their relevance to the topic?
- Where would these links be put? I don't see any problem with doing so if there's good reason to. J Ditalk 10:40, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
The most important links which are contested are (I put them here to leave it for others to decide) Pvosta 15:22, 11 September 2006 (UTC):

Suggesting (personal-)links and leave it to others to decide to include them is the way to go Pvosta 15:22, 11 September 2006 (UTC).
Thank you for "not biting" a newbie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Please_do_not_bite_the_newcomers) Pvosta 15:22, 11 September 2006 (UTC).
- Peter, you're a quick learner. I look forward to your contributions. On your web pages, you're right that you can suggest them and let others decide. They're more likely to like them if they don't link to your consulting business and CV, and if they don't generate popup ads. But even if they do get included as external links, pages you wrote are almost never "references" unless they are copies of published materials that have benefitted from the scrutiny of peer review or a reputable editor. See WP:CITE and WP:V. Dicklyon 03:23, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
- Dick, thanks once again for the information, I am learning. My "personal pages" seem to be hopeless for linking from Wikipedia as they constitute a fundamental breach of Wikipedia policy WP:RS (Self-published sources). Although I make them "in good faith", this is of course no guarantee whatsoever that I produce anything reliable (thrustworthy) on a personal webpage as they are are not subjected to public scrutiny. I could rewrite them as a whole or partially on Wikipedia, but some of them have taken me years of work. They will live further in Wikipedia "limbo" (self-published source, personal, self-promotion,...) but maybe people can use them as a source for writing properly reviewed articles and use some of the links as a contribution for Wikipedia. A validation procedure for personal pages could help, or a place where they can be put for review????Pvosta 14:47, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
- Dick, there is a webpage of me on "Lambic and geuze", which breaks every guideline on "self-promotion" and "pop-up" adds (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/pvosta/pcrbier1.htm), but which was put as a link on the "Lambic" page of Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lambic) by someone else and has been on that page probably for years. It is a "personal page", so I have mentioned this infringement on the discussion page of this article.
- If somebody else thought your page was worth linking from a wikipedia article, that's a whole different deal from you deciding to link to your own stuff. But if you think it's not appropriate you should of course feel free to remove it. Dicklyon 21:25, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
- Dick, thanks for the answer. Removing the "Lambic page" myself is a bit too much (it took me a lot of work to create the content). I leave it up to experienced editors to decide on the fate of the link.Pvosta 14:35, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi... I just wanted to let you know that I'm not out to get you or anything. The reason I've listed a couple of pages you created for deletion is that there have been quite a few problems with HIPAA and pages which have been forked off HIPAA serving as a warehouse for commerical links to consulting firms. I'd encourage your goal of creating a series of pages on clinical trials, but including commerical links on a page which otherwise has little content is a red flag. Feel free to list the pages you create as "stubs" (see WP:STUB for more info on stubs and stub categories); this tells other users that the article needs expansion and invites their input. MastCell 21:42, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you for the clarification, it certainly is frightening being listed for deletion. The reason for linking from HIPAA to clinical data management is that the privacy rules in HIPAA are of major concern in data handling in clinical data management and in managing data in clinical trials. I try to fill some gaps in articles on clincial development, but I start with small entries because of lack of time and I always hope (in vain?) that this kickof will get other people interested. I also prefer linking from "See also's" instead of inserting a sentence in an article with an "artificial" link.Pvosta 13:56, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the edits; it is much better. Do you know what Pope Benedict XVI's relationship was and how many years he wrote for the journal? That may be helpful in filing out the article. Thanks. Storm Rider (talk) 18:07, 22 November 2006 (UTC).
- Thank you for the comment. I edited the article because of its relation with father Schillebeeckx, who is Flemish, and I am working on improving the information on Flanders and Flemings in Wikipedia (mainly on our science and biomedical research). I have no information on the relation of Pope Benedict XVI with the journal. Pvosta 08:24, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
Hello, Pvosta, and welcome to Wikipedia. An article you recently created, TC 125, has been tagged for speedy deletion because its content is clearly written to promote a company, product, or service. Hi Pvosta, thanks for your corrections of the article on ELSO (European Life Science Organisation). Even though I would have put the various additions and corrections into less separate article saves to not bloat the version list, I like the changes. Thanks. --Jasu 12:07, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Jasu, thank you for your kind remark. The reason for editing in (very) small increments is the instability of the connection to Wikipedia. I once lost a lot of work because something went wrong with the connection. This has lead to "micro-editing" from my side to avoid losing my work.Pvosta 12:14, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Speedy deletion
A tag has been placed on Thomas Leysen, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable, that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert notability may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is notable, you may contest the tagging. To do this, please add {{hangon}}
on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

Regularity contribs
The information is appreciated, but it needs a source. It's very difficulty to source after the fact from someone else's information. MSJapan 17:43, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
- I added two references to the history section. Pvosta 17:50, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
NPOV on regularity
The problem is that a section on "liberal" Freemasonry pretty much unfocuses the article. First off, all the information we have is on regular Freemasonry, because there's almost nothing in English about the other. Moreover, almost everything is totally different - the history, membership requirements, and everything else. We'd need two sets of history, two sets of requirements, and so on. The article would be so confusing as to be unusable. It's almost too big as it is.
One of the other reasons we don't have GodF in there (aside from a reference) is because irregular Freemasonry in general (at least in English-speaking countries) is messy (and a bit shifty, IMHO) - if a few guys get mad at their GL and go off and start a new one, they try to get the URL into the articles as "regular" when in fact going there will get a regular Mason suspended, and many times it's only a few people who ever run these things. Regularity also allows for a systematic approach - there generally isn't more than one recognized GL in a country, and again, the rest are usually formed because somebody got mad at somebody else. I mean, Belgium is how big and it's got at least four different web addresses for Grand Lodges of one type of another. I can't tell which is which, but I know which one is UGLE-recognized.
That being said, a decent article on Le Droit Humain would be useful, and we've got some stuff on Internatial Co-Freemasonry that could be added to. I just don't see a feasible way to add "liberal" stuff into the main article without making it too unwieldy and confusing for everybody. MSJapan 15:53, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for clarifying things for me. Pvosta 16:54, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
I'm thinking of prodding this for deletion - the majority of the article is a list of members, and there's nothing in it about what the group does, and as such, I think this violates WP:NOT a links repository.
I think it's great that you are enthusiastic about creating articles, but please try to ensure they meet Wikipedia's notability criteria - as it stands, you're the only person who knows anything about your article topics, and if you only have a few sentences, that's probably how the articles will stay. I do housekeeping on the Freemasonry category from time to time, and I tend to put anything that's of questionable value up for deletion. MSJapan 21:08, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the remark, it seems that article related to continental-style freemasonry are harder to get started?
- Yes, but that's because in general, English language sources deal with Masonry from England - what I know of Continental Freemasonry is largely from research papers or what people tell me, rather than being able to go to the bookstore and get a book (which I can do very easily for "regular" Masonry). So it's hard to assert notability through sources aside from really infamous issues like GodF, because there aren't a lot of sources in English. MSJapan 00:25, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the clarification. My approach is to fill the gaps on continental-style freemasonry in a first iteration and subsequently deepen the content of the articles. It improves the coverage already and I mark the articles as stubs to indicate that they require more work. I have no idea about the state of knowledge on continental freemasonry in the english speaking world? Being a Belgian, Dutch and French sources are accessible for me, but obviously this does not help non-dutch and non-French speaking editors to verify notability (I get my information from public sources such as websites and books which are readily available, I am interested because it is just another part of general history). It bothers me too that these articles are not easily accessible for verification and editing by other people, it takes longer to improve their quality with a limited group of editors (one for the moment?). Pvosta 11:29, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Name usage
If you google Hippoliet van Peene, you see that ALL Dutch and MOST Belgian sites use van, not Van. That leaves us with a few questions, before moving again possibly to H. Van P. Maybe you could answer some of them.
- 1. What is written in his birth certificate?
- 2. How did he himself sign? Are there authentic (facsimile) signatures available?
- 3. Do Belgians know about this different usage? Why don't they use it then in their writing?
- 4. Since when (rather recent?) do Belgians (or only Flemings??) use the Van differently from Dutch van? Our Hippoliet was born in 1811 when Belgium was part of France, later Holland again, so he was French by birth and became Dutch after 1814, and Belgian only after the Belgian Independence in 1830. Kraxler 20:31, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

Freemasonry POV
Well, as you haven't given me a specific example, I would say that it probably can't be helped. We simply don't really have real liberal Freemasonry in English-speaking countries; we have splinter groups. Other than that, the Masonry most folks in England and the US will run into is regular Freemasonry, so that's what we need to focus on. Every Mason I have ever met, even in public, has been a regular Mason.
If you see POV issues, how do you suggest that gets fixed without ending up with two separate articles that will be far too confusing for the reader because they won't have any idea about what half the stuff is?
I'm a little concerned that you're more interested in advertising than articles, because I see complaints rather than dialogue. MSJapan 11:31, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for the clarification. As I am not a native speaker of English, my messages may not use the appropriate wording and lack the subtleties of a more fine-tuned grammar and vocabulary. Don't get me wrong, I admire the work which has been done on the articles on Wikipedia, not do I want to write "promotional" articles. To clarify some of my questions. What puzzles me is the classification of articles (Lodeges, co-freemasonry,...), what are the criteria which are being used? When dealing with the article on the Constitution of Anderson, this article was marked for deletion while the article on the Ahiman Rezon was left untouched? The box for labeling an article for deletion mentions "Nominator: Please consider notifying the author(s) of this page using: subst:prodwarning|Constitutions of the Free-Masons", which wasn't done. I would give an article a chance to grow instead of simply marking it for deletion without any notice, but this may be caused by my inexperience on the way things go on Wikipedia.Pvosta 14:22, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
Unspecified source for Image:Dirk_Inzé_070418.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Dirk_Inzé_070418.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.
As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 23:01, 18 April 2007 (UTC). Constitutions of the Free-Masons
- Pvosta, What I was saying is that the article" Constitutions of the Free-Masons" isn't properly titled. It would not be "Constitutions of the Free-Masons". 1st, Freemsons is one word. 2nd, yes, there's several revisions by several different people, but it's not entirely new, so not multiple; after that, I'm not even sure about the "the". We have to rename it anyway, so perhaps let it stay in the Manuscripts article where it is, grow the whole article, & when it's too big, split this section off into a new (better named) article. Then no-one can say "why are you creating a stub blahblahblah". Grye 19:06, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, I just used a title consistent with the title which Anderson used, but you are right this is not consistent with the way this is written now. The usage of the plural "constitutions" is also in line with the usage in the title of Anderson. I based the title of the article on the title of Anderson's work, but thus is indeed not consistent with the modern usage and understanding. As to your remark on the merger, as the author of this article I have of course a "double" feeling about that, but if the content is left untouched (as is now the case as you dealt with my earlier concern, for which I am very grateful) I have to accept and will accept the decision of the majority on this (not cheer of course, as you may understand). In this case, shouldn't we merge the Ahiman Rezon article too? Pvosta 06:58, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
Speedy deletion of Constitutions of the Free-Masons
A tag has been placed on Constitutions of the Free-Masons, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:
Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet very basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}}
on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.
For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this.
- So yeah, I was going to redirect it, because it may well resurface someday, but the "Free-Masons" thing would become "Freemasons", so it would be deleted someday anyway. THis gives it a clean slate. Grye 00:16, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi Pvosta, I noticed you've been adding articles about people to Category:Biography: for example Kevin De Cock, Frans de Cort. I just wanted to mention that Category:Biography is intended for articles about biographies (i.e. published biographical works) rather than for biographical articles themselves. So Kevin De Cock and Frans de Cort should just be categorized in the appropriate place under 'people'. regards, --Saforrest 15:33, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
Famous Belgians
No suggestions - I think you are doing a brilliant job. I know a few Dutch people, and the errors they make when writing English are very similar to yours. I wish I could speak Flemish as well as you speak English! Deb 10:53, 6 May 2007 (UTC)
- Deb, thanks for the kind message and thank you once again for your help on the articles. I am learning that writing an article on Wikipedia places higher demands on my skills than writing a technical/scientific article. I will try to avoid "Dutchism", but are there any guidelines on this ?Pvosta 10:58, 6 May 2007 (UTC)
- Maybe Wikipedia:Manual of Style (biographies) would be some help? Deb 16:54, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

Re Ahiman Rezon
hi, added some stuff to your brief article, hope you like it please feel free to make friendly comments changes etc bamboo dragon (I cant remeber how to put a hotlink to my page but its at bamboodragon so you'll find it) 20/5/2007
- Thanks, but where is the source for your additions. Pvosta 08:20, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
basicaly from the online edition of Ahiman Rezon at the PS review of Freemasonry, there are direct quotes from the text (beryl, under the table etc) also from Hammil's 'the craft' and Andrew Prescott's last lecture as head of Sheffield University Masonic research centre. Unless you, or anyone else queries what I have written then I dont see the need to cite the source as it is just a very basic summary of the text of the first edition and the article has a link to that text so thats what I'm using Bamboodragon 17:18, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Luc Bertrand
I saw your article on Luc Bertrand. He is a family friend. Do you know him as well? Are you interested in Belgian companies in general or private equity in EU in general? Great page!
Thank you for your comment. I don't know Luc Bertrand personally, and if you could get a picture as an illustration for the article this would be welcome. I try to expand the presence of Belgian business(-people) on Wikipedia so there is at least some basic information available. It is somewhat strange that in the USA many articles exist on their businesspeople while in Belgium this was lacking to a large extent. I try to fill the gaps, but this of course proceeds slowly.
