Trams, mills, railways ... I think Isambard would have been proud of your approach particulary the French ideas, but he would have barred our veteran editor from further progression for supporting a railway that was merely a metre. But he's not here! So more seriously, thank you on behalf of the wiki. (Let me tell you though that the 100 one s a really cool yellowy gold colour). April Fools DYK?
Hey, MJ, would you be interested in collaborating with me on an April Fools double DYK nom? I'm looking to add two ship articles: one from the WWI era, and one from the WWII era. I thought if you were interested, you could write the WWII-era article. Let me know if you're interested, and I can fill in the details. Thanks. — Bellhalla (talk) 12:09, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
- If you could write an article for the Ellerman Lines ship SS Lesbian (1923), I'll write about their former SS Lesbian (1915). I was thinking about a hook like this:
Other than the usual sources available, like Plimsoll, Convoyweb, etc.; I've found a source for the second one that might be helpful: Here (I also thought of an alternative hook involving only the latter ship, but I'm pretty sure it would be too ribald for the Main Page.) — Bellhalla (talk) 13:46, 15 March 2009 (UTC)…that the Ellerman Lines employed two Lesbians in the early 20th century but both met with tragic fates in the Mediterranean, one in World War I, and the other in World War II?
- Well, I'd seen that there was an older one, but Miramar showed it as Leyland Line (I think). How about either:
or:…that the Ellerman Lines employed three Lesbians in the early 20th century but two met with tragic fates in the Mediterranean, one in World War I, and the other in World War II?
This will give a little context and helps avoid the rather suggestive had. If we want to get suggestive, we could always use only the third ship and say:…that John Ellerman employed not one, not two, but three lesbians in the early 20th century?
(no offense intended to anyone reading this.) — Bellhalla (talk) 00:39, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
- Well, I'd seen that there was an older one, but Miramar showed it as Leyland Line (I think). How about either:

New Zealand quake
Can we get the blurb reworded slightly more specific (specifically, the area affected and the magnitude)? I'm thinking something like A 6.3 MW earthquake hits Christchurch, New Zealand and the surrounding Canterbury region, causing major damage and at least 65 deaths.

Manx2 Flight 7100
Hello Mr. "Mjroots", we have a problem! It is not as funny as you might think it is, if you have a lock into the internet and find a picture of one of your aircrafts next to headlines and words like aircraft accident, fatalities or injured... So again: The aircraft and airline shown in the headline picture was not involved or related to the accident. Unauthorised use of OLT related pictorial material is not acceptable to us. Infact there are a lot pictures of the accident site and aircraft availible, is it possible to use a picture which is related to the accident and the article.

Virgin Blue
G'day from Oz. Apparently (i.e. no RSes yet, just a blog on FlightGlobal and speculation on message boards etc.) Australia's second-largest airline Virgin Blue is going to be renamed Virgin Australia next week. An editor has started a new article for V. Aust. with one line so far, stating it is the new name for V. Blue. I think a page move will be more appropriate - once there is a public announcement or RS - as it will be a rebranding rather than a new entity with a new AOC. I believe that V. Aust. should be deleted and the name protected until such announcement or RS is forthcoming. What do you think? YSSYguy (talk) 10:16, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
- Agree, could be deleted per WP:CRYSTAL, if the airline is rebranded then the article can be moved to to new branding name. Bidgee (talk) 10:26, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
Autogyro identification
Hi, I don't know how well up you are on identification of autogyros, but I recently watched the Doctor Who story Planet of the Spiders (BBCDVD 1809, first broadcast 1974), where in part two there is a multi-vehicle chase, and one vehicle is an autogyro. The registration is G-AXVK, and it is extremely similar to this autogyro, registration G-AXVM; the only visible difference that I can pick out, other than the markings, is that AXVM has fairings over the wheels whereas AXVK doesn't.
If you have the Blue Peter Seventh Book (pub. 1970, ISBN 0 563 09398 6), the same type (without wheel fairings) is shown on front and rear covers, but only one registration is visible, that of the one on the back cover - and then only the last two letters, RC (could it possibly be G-AXRC?).
I have a book
- Howe, David J.; Walker, Stephen James (1996). "Planet of the Spiders (ZZZ)". Doctor Who The Handbook - The Third Doctor. London: Doctor Who Books. pp. 163, 166. ISBN 0 426 20486 7.
which states:
After a chase involving ... an autogyro
Locations: ... Membury Airfield, Membury, Wiltshire
The gyroplane [sic] was hired from Campbell Aircraft Ltd of Membury Airfield and was flown by A. M. W. Curzon-Herrick.
but doesn't name the type of autogyro. Are Campbell Aircraft Ltd the manufacturers of the Campbell Cricket? If so, did they produce any other types which appear similar?
What I want to do is link Campbell Cricket to Planet of the Spiders (and vice versa), but for that I need an explicit source. Any ideas? --Redrose64 (talk) 20:35, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
Aeronorte
FYI and follow-up. Since it is an old issue, I have copied the whole section from my discussion page.
- It seems we have a problem. According to ASN, an airline called Aeronorte lost a DC-3 in 1973. Looks like I'll have to do some digging here. For the moment, I'll un-link Aeronorte from the 1973 DC-3 crash list. Mjroots (talk) 11:49, 31 August 2010 (UTC)
- dear Mjroots. I find it strange as well. What I know for sure is that Aeronorte was bought and merged into Aerovias Brasil in 1953 which in turn was bought by Varig in 1961 (complicated history). Presently there exists another Aeronorte in Portugal but I reckon it has nothing to do with this accident. On the other hand, Mirituba is a small location in the municipality of Itaituba in Pará, Brazil. My huntch is that Aeronorte some kind of business or development company in the Amazon and this DC-3 was a privatly-owned aircraft. I however was not able to gather further evidence. The mistery continues. BRGDS (Brunoptsem (talk) 12:46, 31 August 2010 (UTC))
- Mystery solved as per a kind e-mail from Harro Ranter, the president of ASN. The full name of the company in reference is Aeronorte Indústria e Comércio, being a private company different from the Aeronorte - Empresa de Transportes Aéreos Norte do Brasil mentioned in the wikiarticle. So the article is correct as it is. To avoid future mistakes I will place an explanatory hidden note. BRGDS (Brunoptsem (talk) 09:41, 13 May 2011 (UTC))

Aufklärungsgruppe at Saint-Inglevert Airfield
Hello, thank you for your edit at Saint-Inglevert Airfield. You may have noticed that I've been wikifying the links on this article for a while, would you mind having a look at Aufklärungsgruppe? I considered redirecting to Organization of the Luftwaffe (1933–1945)#Gruppe or Glossary of German military terms, however it also appears in the order of battle of Operation Albion and Order of battle at Jutland. In the end, most of what I found on the internet looked very much like this, which is filled up with so much military jargon that it ends up being unreadable, so I created the stub. Geotags, Grid refs etc,
Geo Links and Geograph
There are problems with your suggestion- which is the reason I haven't done it. There is a discussion forum Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Geographical coordinates that is discussing the whole thing. The crux is that many people are unhappy if the link goes to one site, no matter how useful, and believes that the link should only go to GeoHack, where the reader can choose the map they want. There are a lot of unhappy people there. I have a problem with the way we are doing the conversion. It looks great, but if we edit either gridref or the location then the other doesn't change. In looking for a solution, I have been looking at the maths and a lot doesn't add up, this coupled with the volatility of forum, I have been hanging back. ClemRutter (talk) 18:32, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
- Hello there, and thanks for the contact. To me this looks good, but (and it is a big but) I'm afraid the issue appears more complex and contentious than I had first anticipated. I'm also not particularly "clued-up" about which system is good and which is bad, which seems to be part of an ongoing debate. All I know is that there should be a standard system, and these should be included as part of the text for settlements in the UK. Have you taken this to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Geographical coordinates? -- Jza84 · (talk) 23:15, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
Infobox geotags- looks as it will take some time. Its on my list! ClemRutter (talk) 01:28, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
Checking inline geotags
- Now the accuracy of OStoWiki has been corrected (+/- 2m) all previous references may need tweaking.
- The GeoHack tool now has a new interface and at the bottom of the GB section, under the dangerously inaccurate grid reference is a fantastic tool called Map of all Coordinates in article.
- I tried it on the Loose stream, and because of it I I'm going to make another tweak to OStoWiki.
ClemRutter (talk) 21:45, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
It is perfectly safe to use: the next tweak will be an enhancementClemRutter (talk) 23:59, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
Oscoor
Thanks for the reminder. Although I use OS maps within multimap to find things, multimap gives DMS output, and the numbering of the OS gridlines in the display tends to be hidden; so I tend to think I'm not ever going to use {{oscoor}}. However your intervention did cause me to go back and read the national grid system article, so as to understand the resolution of various lengths of OS coordinate. As I would not have done this without your intervention; thanks! --Tagishsimon (talk) 15:41, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
Problem with gbmapping and oscoor templates
Hi, There seems to be a small inaccuracy in the translation of OSGB coords to WGS84. I've mentioned it here and here but haven't found anyone who might be able to fix it. Do you know where it would be best to raise it, please?--Cavrdg (talk) 20:45, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
Grid refs
I did not like having to display grid refs without spaces. At long last I have got round to asking someone and doing this very simple edit. The php that it calls was already prepared to receive spaces. That means you could do this edit to other articles that call oscoor (which is now a redirect). But certainly, I suggest using {{gbmappingsmall}} in any future case. — [[::User:RHaworth|RHaworth]] (talk · contribs) 18:59, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

Please note I am the copyright holder of the main history book for Borough Green, Kent. I note that today I updated the link to the local history site. This had been hosted firstly on freeserve pages, more recently on tiscali. A lionk ( outdated_ to that site was on the wiki page.
Much of the content for the BG page comes from the booklet which is copyright. If you are not going to link to the pages where the history is now hosted I would be grafetul if you would remove the other information. Some of that is in the public domain. Some is copyright.
I fail to see why you have removed the link to the new site hosting anyway without any clear explanation.

Old British buildings
Hi. I noted your interest in old British buildings and heritage. I've requested a bot to draw up a full list of listed buildings in the UK organized by town/county. Please comment Listed Buildings here and offer your views on whether this would be a good idea or not.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:41, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

- Looking again at my photos, I see that there was a third loco, of the same design as the others. Its name is not legible.
- I forget, after the passage of time, how my enthusiast-friend and I knew about the steam locos at Snowdown, but I suspect that the information may have come from the Newsletter of the Locomotive Club of Great Britain; perhaps they had organised a visit there. The date was 1968-9 or maybe even early 1970.

PMV Incubator Article
Talk about talk page stalking...from the above, and via a picture, I ended up at Wikipedia:Article Incubator/SE&CR Diagram 960 PMV which you were instrumental in creating.
Things have moved on since the article was started there -- not least the the AI is now intended for articles that have been deleted but rescued (although this definition is under some dispute). The PMV page would now be created under the AFC process (I think). Cutting to the chase, the article is remaining in limbo where it is, as it doesn't appear on search results, and no-one really knows that it's there. There is also no obvious process for getting it out again! However, it might be deleted if no-one works on it.
Not proposing to do anything myself to it (although the History shows I did, once) but thought that you might appreciate a reminder of its existence... -- EdJogg (talk) 23:53, 1 April 2011 (UTC)
Regarding reliance on Whyte notation to indicate loco type...
I agree that, for someone familiar with railways, '2-6-0' would immediately imply a steam locomotive; however, consider that BR TOPS classes 01 - 14 cover a series of 0-4-0 and 0-6-0 shunters, and that we should be careful what we assume about a user's knowledge or interests, and I didn't think it was unreasonable to add the qualifier 'steam'. I don't think it is particularly redundant, considering the environment we are writing in. (Also, there are several other entries that already mention 'steam locomotive', one of which you edited today!)

Renaming proposals - UK railways
I think it is normal to leave a message on the talk pages of potentially affected articles when discussing renames etc. That hasn't happened yet. Maybe there is a machine that will do this? Sf5xeplus (talk) 12:56, 9 March 2011 (UTC)
- The easiest way I think to get this done would be to make a request at WP:BOTREQ asking for a neutral statement to be placed on the talk page of affected articles. I think that any page tagged with the UK railway project template AND with a title including the words "British Rail Class" would get everything (the handful of lists we can do manually). As for the note, how does this sound:
- This article is currently named in accordance the Wikipedia:WikiProject UK Railways naming conventions for British rolling stock allocated a TOPS number. A proposal to change this convention and/or its scope is being discussed at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject UK Railways#Naming convention, where your comments would be welcome.
- I'd make the request myself, but I want to check the wording of the note is as neutral as I hope it is. Thryduulf (talk) 15:07, 9 March 2011 (UTC)
- I mentioned this to User talk:Tivedshambo - they don't think it's necessary.
- If you want to add a message - a neutral way to say it is "This article falls within the scope of a title renaming proposal and discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject UK Railways#Naming convention, where you are free to comment contribute blah blah etc etc".Sf5xeplus (talk) 15:28, 9 March 2011 (UTC)
- Mjroots commented on my talk page that they think the wording I suggested is fine. I think your suggested wording is less clear (it doesn't make it clear that it's more than that article being considered, nor why it is relevant to that page), so I've made the request with the original wording, but with the addition of a header "Possible change to the title of this article". See WP:BOTREQ#WikiProject UK Railways. I've asked that the project be notified when the task is done. Thryduulf (talk) 15:48, 9 March 2011 (UTC)

I saw your DAB-solve for Portsmouth station. (The {{dn}} is still there, incidentally.) I saw the need for a DAB-solve previously but left it as I didn't know when electrification had been extended to the Harbour station. Is Southsea the correct link? -- EdJogg (talk) 13:26, 1 April 2011 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) the
{{dn}}
was removed by Tim PF at 12:41, 1 April 2011. The line to Portsmouth Harbour was electrified at the same time as the terminal plats at Portsmouth and Southsea: see - which makes it clear that improvements for electrification included:
- the lengthening of the high-level plats at P&S to 820 ft
- four plats at P. Hbr "were similarly lengthened and new station buildings put in hand"
- three-aspect colour-light signalling from P&S to P. Hbr (brought into use 20 June 1937)
- Of the introduction of services we have:
- Trial runs "right through to Portsmouth Harbour" began 11 April 1937
- normal trains on Sats & Suns only "to that destination" from Waterloo began 29 May
- full service "to ... Portsmouth" began 4 July
- Of the type of service, much detail is given, but may be summarised as two types: slow trains terminated at Portsmouth & Southsea, dividing at Woking (other portion for Alton); and fast trains called at P&S and terminated at Portsmouth Harbour. --Redrose64 (talk) 14:30, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

Rivers
Earlier discussions are archived here
Mike I feel quite pleased with myself! I had found the relatively new Geobox|rivers at River Trent and investigated. You will now see the result at this article (I took an easy one first!). There may well be other information - I couldn't work out the coordinates, and in any case a river covers more than one; couldn't find the exact length; and dunno if there is anywhere to be able to get flow rates etc. You may well be able to add more tributaries - I took the ones you had alraedy mentioned under the mills. None of the blanks come out until you give some information. I had also discovered the exact location of the source - a historical document on the Medway; I'm sure you also know more about its course, although perhaps that isn't too important. Peter Peter Shearan (talk) 21:20, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
Mill symbols
As you see I have put two new symbols into your sandbox article. Just a quick fix. Using mills in this way is quite an extension. Come September we need to define what symbols we need- mills with weirs for example, millponds goits. I have been visiting the Dark Peak and realise how much more important water engineering was in the 1780s and the growth of the Cotton Industry. Still I am taking a break now. ClemRutter (talk) 08:31, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
- I have been talking with guys at WP:RIVERS and trying to work out what icon system to recommend. In a nutshell, the cyan worms are out, rivers are dark blue unless you need to differentiate- then non-navigable are light blue and navigable are darkblue. but I am still working on it. You have source at the top. River Len, Kent seems to be correct. See also Manchester Ship Canal for an upside down example. Medway diagram
This takes a little thought. I like diagrams- very useful for showing mill locations- but there is a convention on canals that navigable should be darkblue and non navigable light blue. The tails as steams meet the river seem clunky. I have been concerned about the representation of reservoirs for some time- is a reservoir navigable or not- how do you show the dam bypass channel. In the simple case: a truncated salami would do- but they often are constructed at the confluence of several rivers. A lot of icons need some thought- and that will take a little time- I will put it on the list. (Some mills are on the wrong bank but that is minor). --ClemRutter (talk) 11:56, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
- I have put in far too many hours playing with the diagram on my talk page. Please look over- and see if there is anything to add- you will need to proof read the position of the mills relative to the new locks, and the addition of the Beult and the two mouths of the Teise. I have added some new icons to Template:Waterways legend particularly putting curved dams on reservoirs. --ClemRutter (talk) 19:27, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
To be positive: it is getting there. A few of your changes I don"t like. A river is a hydrographical item, as well as cultural one. The first uncollapsed diagram needs to stand in its own right, and give the reader basic infomation about its course. The collapsed bits need to show the twidddly bits, that the Teise at Yalding has bifurcated, and where mills were situated. When the course is a navigation we need info on the locks. Background colour needs to show whether the river is tidal, a navigation, or non-navigable. The section names are taken from the NRA, and are used by the waterways community- I don't think Lower Mid Upper is really informative. The whole diagram (uncollapsed) needs to be complete and informative in itself. I think that we should do another round of rollbacks and improvement then wrap it in a template and ask the WP:RIVERS for comment on any points where policy decisions need to be made. I would like to use it as a model to be attached to their policy page. I then want to code up the River Etherow, Irk, Irwell, Medlock, Goyt can't you just smell the cotton. --ClemRutter (talk) 13:08, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, width is critical when using collapsable box- expand all the section to see it isn't broken by the change. Titles a lot better- I took one look and thought- I knew I was about to to do that-- but I can't remember having done it. These wretched dock icons look awful- I am going to redo them- I cant see why a narrow dock should be five times wider than the river. I am more concerned about the length if the diagram, then allowing the diagram to be included in Kent pages that make a mention to the Medway. Then into Infoboxes.I am uploading images along the commons:Portland Basin- Ashton Canal at the moment.--ClemRutter (talk) 11:40, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

True. There is a limit to the sort of ship you can drive under Rochester Bridge. I think the commissioner of HM Dockyard would agree with me. Hi. I notice you have updated the River Waveney map, but was a little surprised to see that it now runs from south to north. One of the problems of the transposition is that several of the adjoining rivers are now shown on the wrong side. Oulton Broad should be on the other side, as should the River Yare, and the Haddiscoe cut is no longer clearly labelled. I was going to try to sort it out but am a bit short of time at the moment. Bob1960evens (talk) 18:52, 25 September 2009 (UTC)
- I am back from holiday now, and have moved Oulton Broad, Haddiscoe Cut and the River Bure back to where they should be, corrected the direction of the locks, and produced a windmill symbol for the windmills. However, I have no sources for which side of the river the windmills should be on, and as the river and Haddiscoe Cut have now been transposed, wondered if you could just check them. Thanks. SS Great Western
Hi, I would like you to revert your move of SS Great Western to SS Great Western (1838) and to instead create SS Great Western (disambiguation). My reasoning is that a rather large number of articles link to SS Great Western and they will have to have their links changed now. The SS Great Western was Brunel's first ship and is the best known ship of that name. My reading of the guidelines on disambiguation is that the main (and only article) should remain unmoved and the disambiguation page (with a suitable hat link on the SS GW page) would be the best solution. WP:AN suggestion
Next time you post about an issue to WP:AN, it would be helpful if you refrained from systematically misrepresenting the situation, and if you made some effort to notify all involved parties rather than just the one who you misleadingly claim agrees with you.
As I set out in detail at WP:AN
- Mjroots has created a large series of pointless navboxes, by relying on the essay WP:NBFILL, and appears not to have read the relevant guidelines WP:NAVBOX and WP:REDNOT
- Over 40 of these navboxes have been nominated at TFD, and in not one case has anyone other than Mjroots supported keeping any of them
- Apart from the !votes at TFD, 3 other editors have explicitly opposed Mjroots's use of the navboxes: User:PamD, User:Weakopedia and User:Ssilvers. Those editors should have been notified of this complaint.
- The comment by ClemRutter was not that the navboxes should be kept, but rather that it was too much hassle to delete them
- No other editor has supported Mjroots's creation of these navboxes for small villages, and no other editor has supported Mjroot's padding them out with links which breach WP:NAVBOX
I have asked there for advice on whether your sustained misconduct is better addressed at WP:ANI or through an RFC/U. But it would really be much much much much much much much much much much much much much easier for everybody if you would simply read WP:NAVBOX and WP:REDNOT.
You have
- falsely accused me of vandalism
- falsely accused me "degrading" templates by removing links which do not meet the criteria in WP:NAVBOX and WP:REDNOT
- falsely accused me of trying to disguise those removals from TFD
- falsely claimed that my concerns are not shared by others
... and despite several attempts by me to engage with you on the application of WP:NAVBOX and WP:REDNOT to your navboxes, you choose not to continue those discussions, but instead to make a bogus complaint to the Admin's Noticeboard.
You are an admin, and the community expects that you should know better than to engage in such shoddy conduct. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 19:11, 24 December 2010 (UTC)
- I was required to notify ClemRutter per the notice when posting at AN, as I had mentioned him in the post. I've not yet read your reply, and will do so next. As I made clear at AN, I was trying to seek some uninvolved input. Mjroots (talk) 19:44, 24 December 2010 (UTC)
- If you want outside input, open an WP:RFC on the topic. But please don't try a repetition of your false claims at AN, such as your bogus assertion that only three of us have commented so far. If you were acting in good faith, you would withdraw this nonsense without needing to be asked.
- But as it say at the top of WP:AN, "These pages are not the place to raise disputes over content, or reports of abusive behaviour". You used WP:AN to raise a dispute over content, and make bogus suggestions of abusive behaviour. Bad idea. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 22:16, 24 December 2010 (UTC)
Online Ambassadors
I saw the quality of your contributions at DYK and clicked on over to your user page and was pretty impressed. Would you be interested in helping with the WP:Online_Ambassadors program? It's really a great opportunity to help university students become Wikipedia contributers. I hope you apply to become an ambassador, Sadads (talk) 16:21, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
- I am not sure what you think you are unqualified at. You seem to be quite the content developer and have experience in several processes which our students are participating in. Also, you don't show any signs of being particularly hostile to any users. Is there anything in particular you are concerned with? Sadads (talk) 14:25, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
- Not to be too persistent, but I feel you are doubting yourself a bit too much. Some thoughts on your reasoning: Many of us don't use IRC, only a small group is regularly on it and we have enough ambassadors now, not everyone needs to chip in (I use other communication channels with my students like email, facebook chat and gchat). Also, in both cases of disagreement it appears that you responded with civility in response to both cases and you do not appear to be deliberately provoking other users. If you mention both cases and your lessons learned in the application, I would be surprised if you didn't pass (we are looking for a history of aggressive behaviour not passionate misunderstanding or temporary poor judgement, User:Piotrus for instance is an Ambassador, but has had a considerable Arbcom case to his name). You also appear to be genuinely welcoming and helping new users from the looks of your contributions. Think of the Ambassador program as a chance to make positive impact on students! Whether or not you choose to apply, I would like to say good luck editing and don't doubt your own ability to be an empathetic and helpful contributer! Sadads (talk) 15:01, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

Stubs
Mjroots,
To your reply about you creating articles from scratch. I believe that the assessment can be changed if another contributor believes it should be something else and therefore I accept the change you've reverted the WikiProject Disaster Management Stub at the bottom of the article. That was the first time I've put a "Stub" related template onto an article and of course if it had more information, and was a bigger article, I would recommend as a nicely put suggestion type the article out in a word processor before adding it to Wikipedia? Adamdaley (talk) 20:15, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
If you don't use a word processor, then maybe type out the article in your User:Mjroots subpage? For example Mjroots/subpage article name here until you have found more than enough information to make it such a good article then posting it to Wikipedia for the assessment you are hoping for? When you stated that my talkpage was confusing, I took on your advice made a subpage and added my stuff there. I'm not here to argue or fight with you, as someone said to me once over the last 3 months, we all are volunteers and contributors to Wikipedia. Jimmy Wales has given us an opportunity to get involved in something and have an interest in contributing too, which of course I am very thankful and have learnt alot compared to High School. Yes, there is the odd person who disrupts continuously on Wikipedia that can be dealt with. Hope things have been sorted out and that we can work together again in future articles. Re:A request
Hi, I noticed you created {{Location map Spain}}. Would you create a similar one for the Pas-de-Calais Department for me please? I've had a go myself but just keep getting error messages on preview. Extent of the map would be about 51.2 top, 49.8 bottom, 1.2 left and 3.5 right (I think), not sure where the centre would be but approx 50.5, 2.4 should do it. Mjroots (talk) 16:53, 20 March 2011 (UTC)
- Do you have an image of the Pas-de-Calais Department to use? The only ones I can find on Wikimedia Commons have something colored in for some reason. -Theanphibian (talk • contribs) 22:22, 20 March 2011 (UTC)
- Hi, I did raise this at WP:GL/M#French Departments. The map I had in mind was File:Pas-de-Calais department location map.jpg, but apparently that needs to be converted to .svg format. What I'm looking for is something similar to {{Location map France Côtes-d'Armor}}. These maps could probaly be improved by the addition of major roads, railways and town such as on {{Location map United Kingdom Kent}}, but that is another matter. Mjroots (talk) 07:52, 21 March 2011 (UTC)
- Oh my word, I do not like File:Pas-de-Calais department location map.jpg at all. If you want to get this rolling, I'd say get Inkscape or something and remove the red parts of a map like this File:Calais (Arrondissement) Plan.svg, and if you were ambitious, you could use a background from one of the other images. There is certainly no perfect candidate for the task in existence. Once that's established, the next most important task is to relatively accurately pin the coordinates of the 4 corners (note this really only requires 4 values). Then with those values and the image making the location map is the easy part. -Theanphibian (talk • contribs) 16:02, 21 March 2011 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) For the SVG file suggested, removal of the red parts will leave those areas uncoloured, which won't match the neighbouring grey bits. Instead, change the red bits to the matching grey. You don't even need Inkscape - a plain text editor will do. Download the file from Commons, search through it and you'll soon find hundreds of tags like
<path style="fill:#xxxxxx" id="pathnnnnn" d="..." />
. The ones that you're interested in are those specifyingstyle="fill:#ff0000"
. Find those, and change the colour value from#ff0000
to#d3d3d3
so that it becomes the same light grey as the rest of the map. There are five of these to do, one for each red bit, but they are not contiguous: the first hasid="path27749"
and the last hasid="path27763"
. Amend, save and upload to commons under a new name. --Redrose64 (talk) 17:12, 21 March 2011 (UTC)- You're talking foreign there. I tried downloading and editing (inkscape and paint), but it ain't just one shade of red, there's various shades of red, black and a mixture of the two. Ideally, there also needs to be distinguishment made between sea (blue) and land (green) too. Mjroots (talk) 17:26, 21 March 2011 (UTC)

- I've managed to de-red that map, but I'm not impressed with the look of it. I'd rather have File:Pas-de-Calais department location map.jpg, but my computer won't give me the option to save as a .svg file As I said, I'm trying to get something similar to the Kent location map, so that file would be the base to work from. Mjroots (talk) 18:07, 21 March 2011 (UTC)
- If you've got shades of red and black and mixtures thereof, that sounds like you downloaded the PNG version (539px-Calais_(Arrondissement)_Plan.svg.png) not the pure SVG. Assuming Windows XP and Firefox, then at the image description page, don't right-click directly on that image. Instead, click on the image itself to enlarge it (like this), and then right-click on the full-size image and select "save page as".
- Then in Inkscape, open the file and zoom in to a usable level. Obtain the grey colour by clicking on any existing grey area so that it gets enclosed by a dashed rectangle; then go for "Object" menu and select "Fill and Stroke" (Shift+Ctrl+F), click the "Fill" tab then the "RGB" tab, and note down the RGBA figure (I see "d3d3d3ff" here). Then click on a red area to select it, and in the "Fill and Stroke" box, amend the RGBA value to that just noted, then click on a different red area and the first one will change to grey. Do this for the other four red areas, and save.
- As the file stands, the area outside the département is undefined in the image, so appears transparent. So, to get the sea blue and the land green requires that these shapes be defined, probably a job for an Inkscape expert. Try Nilfanion (talk · contribs).
- The stuff I put about "search" was to do with using a plain text editor such as MS Wordpad. Inkscape does have a "Find" option (in the "Edit" menu) but it's more complicated than you might expect.
- JPG files cannot be sensibly saved as a SVG file, because of the totally different methods used to specify shapes and colours: JPEGs use a form of raster graphics (with lossy compression to boot); SVGs use vector graphics. You can edit a JPEG in MS Paint but that's no fun. --Redrose64 (talk) 18:49, 21 March 2011 (UTC)
- Hmmm, that explanation is at least understandable. I don't use wordpad except in case of dire emergencies when I can't open a file with anything else (it has happened before) so that I can at least grab the text contained in a file. Despite Theanphibian's dislike, it's the other file we need as a .svg file. Mjroots (talk) 19:05, 21 March 2011 (UTC)

I've asked Nilfanion for assistance. --Redrose64 (talk) 20:51, 21 March 2011 (UTC)
- Well, I'm not sure I'm an expert but thanks for vote of confidence :) As far as I can tell there are 3 options really:
- The only thing that the JPG map gets right is the colour scheme. Its even a copyright violation(!), as it doesn't respect the licence of the map its derived from. I could readily produce an equivalent SVG - this PNG shows what it would look like. This is by far the simplest option, and I could get a SVG prepped and ready for location map use in a few minutes.
- The Arrondissement map is much harder to work with, primarily because its extent and projection are unknown. As a result, getting any other data (like the coastline) aligned with it may be difficult. Even if its straightforward, it will be time consuming. Adding the coastline is important for the map, it would lose a lot without it.
- The best solution would be map made specifically for the Pas de Calais (like the Côtes-d'Armor map for instance). However, that needs the raw data to work with. I only really have good admin boundary data for GB at present. fr:User:Sting is probably the best person for that, as he has made several of this sort of map for France.--Nilfanion (talk) 17:19, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

15 inch gauge template
Hi. You recently changed the title of the template Template:15 inch gauge railways. I totally agree with you, and with why you did it, and that the output is much better. The only reason I hadn't done this myself is that there are multiple other locations on Wikipedia where the same gauge template is producing the same crazy output, and I've been trying to get the gauge template changed. When I first created the page Template:15 inch gauge railways I incorporated the gauge template and back then it DID produce "15 inch Gauge" rather than the silly "1 foot, 3 inches gauge". If you are in agreement, as you seem to be, perhaps you could add your support to the discussion at: Template talk:RailGauge#Gauges between 1 ft and 2 ft. Many thanks.
