Autonumbered tables
Sorry if my reply was too technical, but you did ask at the technical village pump. The method I described is probably not what you want. It would require changes to the site-wide JavaScript code at MediaWiki:Common.js. With that code change, it would be possible to make a table that is numbered automatically. However, I don't think there is broad enough interest in doing this to add the code site-wide. Hopefully that clarifies things. Mike Dillon 02:19, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
- The code I'm talking about can't be added to a single article. It has to be added to MediaWiki:Common.js, a file that is loaded for every user and can only be edited by administrators.
- The way the code works is to find any table with
class="autonumber"
, like the following:
{| class="autonumber" ! Name ! Awards |- | John Doe | 2 |}
- If the "autonumber" class is found, the code adds a new column to the table with the numbering. It isn't possible to add this sort of code to a single article. Mike Dillon 03:03, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
- The request would be made at MediaWiki talk:Common.js, but you'd need to point to a discussion where a good number of people agreed that the feature was necessary. The code that is necessary is quite a bit more than
class="autonumber"
; all that does is identify the tables as needing to have the autonumbered column added. I've posted the necessary code at User:Mike Dillon/Scripts/autonumber.js. Mike Dillon 03:43, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

- I don't think there is any other way to do what you want. Just out of curiosity, why do you even want this table to be numbered? Mike Dillon 04:02, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
- I guess I don't think that having a table that big is useful. I also don't think that getting the total number of people in the table has much encyclopedic value; it seems kind of like trivia. As for the availability of my code, all code that I post on Wikipedia is available for any purpose, as per the licensing statement on my user page. Also, just so you know, the administrators don't decide whether to make the change; their responsibility is to determine if there is community consensus for making the change. Auto Numbered Tables - New Code
How do I propose it? Didn't I just propose it on that Page? I am confused as to how this process works. Please advise. Thanks. (16:58, 12 May 2007 (UTC)) (JosephASpadaro 16:58, 12 May 2007 (UTC))
- What I meant was that you should post or link to the actual code, instead of just discussing the idea. —METS501 (talk) 16:59, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
- I guess that Mike Dillon did that after you posted. Is there anything more I need to do? How does this process work, at this point? Thanks. (JosephASpadaro 17:01, 12 May 2007 (UTC))
- Nothing else to do but wait :-) In a few days, if consensus is that the code should be added, it will be added by an administrator. —METS501 (talk) 17:05, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
- Hi again. Thanks for your help. WHO monitors whether or not concensus is reached? Me? Or some administrator will do so? And what is "concensus"? People will reply to the post on that page and an Admin will "tally" the votes? Thanks. (JosephASpadaro 17:08, 12 May 2007 (UTC))
- There's a number of people watching the page, and most likely some will comment in the next few days. At any time, if an administrator feels that consensus has been reached, he or she will edit the site javascript. —METS501 (talk) 17:22, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

I just got your note. At this point, there doesn't seem to be much interest in adding this functionality. It might be worthwhile to discuss the idea at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals), but so far you're the only one who's expressed an interest in having this feature. As I said before, I only posted the code because I had already written similar code; I don't actually support adding this to the site. Mike Dillon 18:53, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
Help Me # 1
- * * * Real96, please do NOT reply to my Help Me requests. I want help from someone who can -- and is willing to -- be helpful and not barrage me with attitude and Wikipedia "warnings". Thanks. * * *
- At the precise moment, I am willing to. In the IRC room, everyone is currently busy. Also, please read this. Real96 21:20, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
- Great!
- (1) Why are you suggesting that I am a troll? That is the only way to interpret your referring me to a link on the troll article. Any quick look at my list of contributions would dispel that theory immediately. What happened to "assume good faith"? Or, perhaps a better question ... why are you asking me to read the troll article?
- (2) Since when are grammar-related questions off limits to Help Me requests? Since when is grammar NOT wiki-related? I had assumed that articles in Wiki were to be grammatically correct when written. Is my assumption incorrect? I'd like that cleared up for me.
- (3) How do I know when others in the IRC room are available?
- Thanks. Please answer these questions and no others. I counted 7 question marks, and hence, 7 questions. (JosephASpadaro 21:47, 20 May 2007 (UTC))
- Here's the link to the bootcamp room via WP:IRC - (#wikipedia-en-help). Also, be civil with your comments. Thanks! Real96 21:53, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks. Please answer these questions and no others. I counted 7 question marks, and hence, 7 questions. (JosephASpadaro 21:47, 20 May 2007 (UTC))
- And your answers to my other 6 questions? (JosephASpadaro 22:04, 20 May 2007 (UTC))
Please review the conversation thread below. I am getting contradictory answers to my question. Is the word "black" capitalized or not capitalized when referring to the race / ethnicity of people? That is, would one properly use "black people" or "Black people" in a sentence? As I am getting contradictory replies, can anyone provide some citation / source / Manual of Style / Wikipedia rule or regulation or guideline, etc. that addresses this point or a similar point? Thanks. (JosephASpadaro 20:43, 20 May 2007 (UTC))
Here is the original thread:
Is the word "black" capitalized or not when referring to people? Is it ... "Black" people or "black" people? Does Wiki have any rules about this and, if so, where are the guidelines? Thanks. (JosephASpadaro 21:53, 18 May 2007 (UTC))
- The first letter of all titles should be capitalized, and subsequent letters should not. If that wasn't what you were asking, just go with your instincts. ~ Magnus animuM ≈ √∞ 21:57, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
- My question is not referring to titles. Let me rephrase. Which of the following is Wiki/grammatically correct? "There were 100 Black people at the dinner." ... or ... "There were 100 black people at the dinner." Thanks. (JosephASpadaro 22:03, 18 May 2007 (UTC))
:Uncapitalized is the correct version. ~ Magnus animuM ≈ √∞ 22:06, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
- It's "Black" people, just like "White" people or "Green" people or "Red" people. So, it's capitalized, because it's talking about a particular race. Real96 22:26, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
- It's not capitalized. Simplemines 13:22, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
(reduce indent) From a neutral source, the proper noun is capitalized. The helpmes are to be used in order to assist with wikipedia related questions, not grammar related questions. If you need anymore assistance concerning certain topics, then I advise you to ask the Villiage Pump. You have been warned before. Real96 20:50, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
- What are you talking about? It IS indeed a Wiki question. Is not grammar a part of Wiki articles? Or perhaps I am mistaken about that? Please share your infinite wisdom. Should I have prefaced my question by stating: (QUOTE) If I am typing a sentence in a Wikipedia article, and I want to type the following sentence within said Wikipedia article, which would be the correct form for that Wikpedia article: "There are 100 Black people in the room" ... or ... "There are 100 black people in the room." (END QUOTE) Is that the proper way that you want / expect me to ask a question through the Help Me feature? And, what -- pray tell -- have I been warned about before? Don't even bother to reply to me ... I will deal with some one who can -- and wants to -- help. Unleash your anger and attitude on another. Not me. Thanks. (JosephASpadaro 21:17, 20 May 2007 (UTC))
