Our new friend
Starsareintherose is just wonderful. Very, very dear. I am not too concerned about his somewhat promotional presence here because I really think he is not here to promote himself, but rather out of a love for gastropods. He seems to just love them. His English may need continuing improvement, and at his current level, I am not sure how well he can contribute here. Of course, the links to his sites should probably be removed and Wikipedia:WikiProject Gasteropod Lovers League is, well, that is, I don't know how to express it. Also, I am wondering about his uploads. Any thoughts on this? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 12:11, 16 January 2016 (UTC)
- I don't know what to think really. About his image uploads, I am concerned that he may have made the images by cutting pictures out of someone else's work and putting them on a turquoise background with his own label. I suppose I could ask him about that. I probably should also point out to him that his English (and his knowledge of how to organize an article) is not sufficient yet to enable him to work unaided. I should probably recommend that he check with one of us before going live on any new article. I would be very interested in any suggestions you have. Our project is very understaffed these days, and I myself don't spend very much time here. Invertzoo (talk) 14:13, 16 January 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Susan. Nice to be chatting with you again. :) I hope you are well.
- I guess the best plan is to think of what serves the project and then, as gently as possible, do what needs to be done.
- I you asked about the photos because I thought you might recognize them. I searched at bing images and baidu images and found nothing. I thought the same thing -- that he found them and added the background. The next step is to ask him.
- I will also explain how his new project cannot survive and will ask permission to delete it. If he is not happy with that, I will MfD. I will also talk to him about his English.
- Any thoughts on whether or not he can contribute here? Adding refs? Uploading any of his own snail images? Some sort of organization or cleanup?
- Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 21:11, 16 January 2016 (UTC)
- I am slowly recovering my energy from having been sick for two weeks with a viral bronchitis. But basically I am OK, thanks for asking. Yes, In theory we would of course welcome some help with the gastropod articles. As you say, adding refs, uploading some of his own snail images or some sort of organization or cleanup would all be good. However, whether or not he can contribute successfully depends how flexible he is. If he believes he can just do what he wants here, and is inflexible, then it will be a problem. His English is poor enough that it limits what he can do, even if he is willing to work hand in hand with other editors. If it seems he is willing to do less ambitious stuff, then I can talk to JoJan, and probably we can find suitable work for him that does not require a good ability with written English. I did already leave a very short note on his talk page and a somewhat longer note on the talk page of his new project page, as a first step. Invertzoo (talk) 23:17, 16 January 2016 (UTC)
- I am sorry to hear you were sick. I wish you a complete and speedy recovery.
- I would be happy to oversee any editing attempt by him. It is not just English. It is attention to detail and ability to learn. Nobody should have to mop up after him. What would be unacceptable to me is him writing terrible English, missing punctuation, and a zillion talk posts reminding him to spell gastropod right. I am talking about him adding WoRMS refs to articles with none, something that simple. Images that he owns, if they turn out to be accurately named and of value, would be great. I can't think of anything more that the project would need. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:59, 16 January 2016 (UTC)

You can ask me some questions ,please
You must want to konw about the wikiproject I created .And the aims between two projects are not same ,you konw. Starsareintherose (talk) 01:10, 17 January 2016 (UTC)
- Actually I have more than one question for you Starsintherose. One question is about the images you uploaded. It seems the images of the snails are cut out from other images and then put on a blue background. Were the original pictures ones you had taken yourself, or did you find them on the web or copy them from a book? Invertzoo (talk) 01:16, 17 January 2016 (UTC)
WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 6
Hello there! Happy to be writing this newsletter once more. This month:
Some good news: the Wikimedia Foundation has renewed WikiProject X. This means we can continue focusing on making WikiProjects better.
During our first round of work, we created a prototype WikiProject based on two ideas: (1) WikiProjects should clearly present things for people to do, and (2) The content of WikiProjects should be automated as much as possible. We launched pilots, and for the most part it works. But this approach will not work for the long term. While it makes certain aspects of running a WikiProject easier, it makes the maintenance aspects harder.
We are working on a major overhaul that will address these issues. New features will include:
- Creating WikiProjects by simply filling out a form, choosing which reports you want to generate for your project. This will work with existing bots in addition to the Reports Bot reports. (Of course, you can also have sections curated by humans.)
- One-click button to join a WikiProject, with optional notifications.
- Be able to define your WikiProject's scope within the WikiProject itself by listing relevant pages and categories, eliminating the need to tag every talk page with a banner. (You will still be allowed to do that, of course. It just won't be required.)
The end goal is a collaboration tool that can be used by WikiProjects but also by any edit-a-thon or group of people that want to coordinate on improving articles. Though implemented as an extension, the underlying content will be wikitext, meaning that you can continue to use categories, templates, and other features as you normally would.
This will take a lot of work, and we are just getting started. What would you like to see? I invite you to discuss on our talk page.
Until next time,

WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 7
This month:
Development of the extension for setting up WikiProjects, as described in the last issue of this newsletter, is currently underway. No terribly exciting news on this front.
In the meantime, we are working on a prototype for a new service we hope to announce soon. The problem: there are requests scattered all across Wikipedia, including requests for new articles and requests for improvements to existing articles. We Wikipedians are very good at coming up with lists of things to do. But once we write these lists, where do they end up? How can we make them useful for all editors—even those who do not browse the missing articles lists, or the particular WikiProjects that have lists?
Introducing Wikipedia Requests, a new tool to centralize the various lists of requests around Wikipedia. Requests will be tagged by category and WikiProject, making it easier to find requests based on what your interests are. Accompanying this service will be a bot that will let you generate reports from this database on any wiki page, including WikiProjects. This means that once a request is filed centrally, it can syndicated all throughout Wikipedia, and once it is fulfilled, it will be marked as "complete" throughout Wikipedia. The idea for this service came about when I saw that it was easy to put together to-do lists based on database queries, but it was harder to do this for human-generated requests when those requests are scattered throughout the wiki, siloed throughout several pages. This should especially be useful for WikiProjects that have overlapping interests.
The newsletter this month is fairly brief; not a lot of news, just checking in to say that we are hard at work and hope to have more for you soon.
Until next time,

WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 8
This month:
In the last issue of the WikiProject X Newsletter, I discussed the upcoming Wikipedia Requests system: a central database for outstanding work on Wikipedia. I am pleased to announce Wikipedia Requests is live! Its purpose is to supplement automatically generated lists, such as those from SuggestBot, Reports bot, or Wikidata. It is currently being demonstrated on WikiProject Occupational Safety and Health (which I work on as part of my NIOSH duties) and WikiProject Women scientists.
Adding a request is as simple as filling out a form. Just go to the Add form to add your request. Adding sources will help ensure that your request is fulfilled more quickly. And when a request is fulfilled, simply click "mark as complete" and it will be removed from all the lists it's on. All at the click of a button! (If anyone is concerned, all actions are logged.)
With this new service is a template to transclude these requests: {{Wikipedia Requests}}. It's simple to use: add the template to a page, specifying article=
, category=
, or wikiproject=
, and the list will be transcluded. For example, for requests having to do with all living people, just do {{Wikipedia Requests|category=Living people}}
. Use these lists on WikiProjects but also for edit-a-thons where you want a convenient list of things to do on hand. Give it a shot!
The value of Wikipedia Requests comes from being a centralized database. The long work to migrating individual lists into this combined list is slowly underway. As of writing, we have 883 open tasks logged in Wikipedia Requests. We need your help building this list.
If you know of a list of missing articles, or of outstanding tasks for existing articles, that you would like to migrate to this new system, head on over to Wikipedia:Wikipedia Requests#Transition project and help out. Doing this will help put your list in front of more eyes—more than just your own WikiProject.
WikiProject X maintains a database that associates article talk pages (and draft talk pages) with WikiProjects. This database powers many of the reports that Reports bot generates. However, until very recently, this database was not made available to others who might find its data useful. It's only common sense to open up the database and let others build tools with it.
And indeed: Citation Hunt, the game to add citations to Wikipedia, now lets you filter by WikiProject, using the data from our database.
Are you a tool developer interested in using this? Here are some details: the database resides on Tool Labs with the name s52475__wpx_p
. The table that associates WikiProjects with articles and drafts is called projectindex
. Pages are stored by talk page title but in the future this should change. Have fun!
- The work on the CollaborationKit extension continues. The extension will initially focus on reducing template and Lua bloat on WikiProjects (especially our WPX UI demonstration projects), and will from there create custom interfaces for creating and maintaining WikiProjects.
- The WikiCite meeting will be in Berlin in May. The goal of the meeting is to figure out how to build a bibliographic database for use on the Wikimedia projects. This fits in quite nicely with WikiProject X's work: we want to make it easier for people to find things to work on, and with a powerful, open bibliographic database, we can build recommendations for sources. This feature was requested by the Wikipedia Library back in September, and this meeting is a major next step. We look forward to seeing what comes out of this meeting.
Until next time,

Editor of the Week : nominations needed!
The Editor of the Week initiative has been recognizing editors since 2013 for their hard work and dedication. Editing Wikipedia can be disheartening and tedious at times; the weekly Editor of the Week award lets its recipients know that their positive behaviour and collaborative spirit is appreciated. The response from the honorees has been enthusiastic and thankful.
The list of nominees is running short, and so new nominations are needed for consideration. Have you come across someone in your editing circle who deserves a pat on the back for improving article prose regularly, making it easier to understand? Or perhaps someone has stepped in to mediate a contentious dispute, and did an excellent job. Do you know someone who hasn't received many accolades and is deserving of greater renown? Is there an editor who does lots of little tasks well, such as cleaning up citations?
Please help us thank editors who display sustained patterns of excellence, working tirelessly in the background out of the spotlight, by submitting your nomination for Editor of the Week today!

On Saturday April 30, 2016, in conjunction with a global campaign, the Guggenheim will host its fourth Wikipedia edit-a-thon — or, #guggathon — to enhance Wikipedia's coverage of modern and contemporary artists from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, and to counter geocultural systemic bias on Wikipedia. The Guggenheim aims to further the goals of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative, and build on the model of campaigns like the Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at the Guggenheim: Women in Architecture, Wikipedia Asian Month, and Art+Feminism. New and experienced editors are welcome. The event will include a training session for participants who are new to Wikipedia and Wikipedia specialists will be on hand to provide basic instruction and editing support. Sunday June 5, 12-5pm: Women in Jewish History Edit-a-thon | |
---|---|
Join us for a full Sunday of social Wikipedia editing at the Center for Jewish History (drop-in any time!), during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to Women in Jewish History. All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. Expanding coverage of Jewish women on Wikipedia makes these women and their creations discoverable, addresses the gender bias on Wikipedia in a positive way, and works to correct imbalances archival collecting practice and institutional projects that have historically silenced women's narratives. A training session on editing Wikipedia will be held at 12:30 pm. Experienced Wikipedians will be on-hand to assist throughout the day. Please bring your laptop and power cord; we will have library resources, WiFi, and a list of suggested topics on hand. Light refreshments will be provided. Make edits! Ask questions! Be bold!

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Scaly-foot gastropod, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Ctenidium (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Hi Susan!
Really nice to know you're here and looking out for our molluscs. Much better hands than mine. Well, my time as a contributor on Wikipedia was very short. I thought I'd help out the pretty sparse Wikipedia pages on some local nudibranchs, since that's where a lot of beginners turn to first for information, BUT it turned out I was really more of a menace than a help! Eeek, the pages got deleted, then restored, so embarassing! So after that experience I decided to leave contributing the text to my betters and just contribute a few photos. ;-) - Robin — Preceding unsigned comment added by ANudibranchMom (talk • contribs) 00:21, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
- I am sorry you had an unpleasant experience, but your heart was in the right place. There's lots of great work that you could do here without running afoul of the guidelines. I could even talk you through stuff on the phone if that would help. I should explain that I used to be very active on here, but now most of my time goes into iNaturalist. Incorrectly identified image
I just noticed that the image Phyllidiella pustulosa is incorrectly identified. It is actually Phyllidiella zeylanica. I changed the caption where it is used on the English Wikipedia, Phyllidiella, but it is also in use in several other language versions. I'm not sure what is the best course of action in this case. BernardP (talk) 08:41, 15 November 2016 (UTC)
- Oh dear, that is unfortunate. I made a note on the description page of the image on Wikimedia Commons that the ID is wrong, but I will have to put a tag on asking someone who is experienced on Wikimedia to change the name of the file, which needs to be the first step. I am rather busy today but I will try to get a process underway by the end of today or tomorrow. Thanks Bernard! Invertzoo (talk) 13:32, 15 November 2016 (UTC)
ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!
Hello, Invertzoo. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

Editor of the Week seeking nominations (and a new facilitator)
In addition, the WikiProject is seeking a new facilitator/coordinator to handle the logistics of the award. Please contact L235 if you are interested in helping with the logistics of running the award in any capacity. Remove your name from here to unsubscribe from further EotW-related messages. Thanks, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 05:19, 30 December 2016 (UTC)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art Edit-a-thon: Met Open Access Initiative is the Metropolitan Museum of Art's first edit-a-thon, being hosted on Sunday May 21, 2017 in Thomas J. Watson Library at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City. The Met is excited to make available over 375,000 images of public domain artworks for contribution to Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse collection onsite and remotely. We invite you to help enhance Wikimedia communities and platforms with open access images from The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The event requires pre-registration. To register, 1) please sign-up with Eventbrite via The Met's website and 2) add your Wikipedia username to the #Participants on the wikimeetup page. Please check-in with museum staff when you arrive at the Thomas J. Watson Library within the museum. We also welcome remote participation for the global Met Open Access Artworks Challenge (15 May - 30 June, 2017), you can sign up there at Met Open Access Artworks Challenge/Participants. --Pharos (talk) 16:23, 16 May 2017 (UTC) |

Hello there
Hey Susan, how have you been? I'll try and submit Amphidromus for a GA review. I'll be working on it in the next weeks, so feel free to join the battle =D --Daniel Cavallari (talk) 12:17, 6 July 2017 (UTC)
- Hello Daniel, It is always very nice to hear from you, and I am glad that you are OK. I am OK too, and I will do whatever I can to help with this GA process. Please remind me if I forget. I am currently working with Sylvia van Leeuwen, a Dutch citizen scientist. We are about to re-sumbit a big paper to the Dutch journal Vita Malacologica. The paper reports the marine mollusk results of the Caribbean expedition she and I went on 2 years ago, to the little island of Sint Eustatius. I think the paper will be accepted this time around, and I hope the peer reviewers do not demand too much extra work, as this paper has been quite a huge amount of work already. Anyway, best of luck with the GA -- it will not be nearly as difficult as an FA attempt. Best, Invertzoo (talk) 13:05, 6 July 2017 (UTC)

Sunday July 30: Action=History Wiki-Hackathon @ Ace Hotel | |
---|---|
On the last Sunday of every month, the Boardroom at Ace Hotel New York hosts Action Equals History — a unique opportunity for New Yorkers to learn hands-on in a technology training/workshop session about the mechanics, practices and benefits of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects. This is an opportunity for all to gather, share and work collectively towards a more robust account of history. For this month, we'll focus on Wikipedia casual editing, ways to use and develop Wikidata, building better edit-a-thon tools for a variety of different thematic campaigns, and user-testing them with the community. Towards a goal of advancing these tools for wider use with diverse local groups.
Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) 14:21, 24 July 2017 (UTC) |
