here starts our conversation: |
Jobar> Hi |
<Jobar> !ambassador |
<My76Strat> hello |
<Jobar> hey |
<Jobar> quick question |
<My76Strat> sure |
<Jobar> when I signed up for an account 3 months ago I used the username Jaobar |
<My76Strat> k |
<My76Strat> !userinfo Jaobar |
<Jobar> now that I've been editing for the USPPI, which has led to my posting of some detailed info about myself, I changed my page to my real name Jonathan A Obar |
<Helpmebot> http://enwp.org/User:Jaobar http://enwp.org/User_talk:Jaobar http://enwp.org/Special:Contributions/Jaobar http://enwp.org/Special:Log?type=block&page=User:Jaobar Groups: Age: 56.14:48:24.2848710 Registered:01/11/2011 11:40:33 Count: 146 Activity:2.57873315012391 |
<Jobar> this was so that my name could appear on certain pages I guess |
<Jobar> anyways |
<My76Strat> That is misguided |
Let me explain what I thought was misguided. Jobar describes the account he created months ago. Then he mentions USPP (the program) the beginning of editing for the course, and "which has led to my posting of some detailed info about myself" the personal information. In common practice, many times within the program students lament they regret having made an account using their real name. So I hear this guy I think is a student describe that he had an account, and then when he started this semester, began editing from what I thought was the new account his course had set up for his class. And I said That is misguided" because of the many times we have expressed to these groups that we don't require them to edit from their real names. I even went one step further during discussion phase and suggested we should advise them not to. To easy for them to be outed when they edit from their real name and the school the go to is well known and published. But anyway I thought that is what I was dealing with. A user who had two accounts, and wasn't thrilled about editing from the one in his full real name. ok well that was a wrong premise, and it gets worse. there was a lot of misunderstanding and I let you decide if you thought I was being clearly assessed of the situation. |
Jobar continues: |
<Jobar> the info that was on Jaobar is now on Jonathan A Obar, and just today Jaobar the page was deleted |
<Jobar> ok |
<Jobar> so, when I click on my username, I get to a page that says deleted |
<Jobar> g6 or whatever |
<Jobar> so what should I do |
<Jobar> to link my username to Jonathan A Obar |
<My76Strat> where does your username appear as Jobar? |
<Jobar> Jaobar |
<Jobar> At the top of the page when I log in |
<Jobar> it is also my login name |
<My76Strat> can you paste a link? |
<Jobar> to what |
<Jobar> the Jaobar page? |
<Jobar> the helpmebot posted a link |
<Jobar> ^ |
<My76Strat> right it is deleted |
<Jobar> right |
<Jobar> if you look what it says on the page it says |
<My76Strat> So you want two accounts? |
<Jobar> * 01:27, 9 March 2011 Alexf (talk | contribs) deleted "User talk:Jaobar" (G6: Housekeeping and routine (non-controversial) cleanup) |

<Jobar> No |
<Jobar> perhaps incorrectly I moved all the info and discussion from Jaobar to Jonathan A Obar |
<Jobar> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_A._Obar |
<My76Strat> You moved it? |
<Jobar> yes, because I created a link [[Jonathan A. Obar] |
<Jobar> on a few pages which linked to nothing |
<Jobar> so I created the page |
<Jobar> and figured that everything should be stored there... maybe I should just have the two pages then? |
<My76Strat> right |
<Jobar> one with the info and one with my account? |
<My76Strat> !userinfo Jonathan A. Obar |
<Helpmebot> There is no such user 'Jonathan A. Obar'. |
<Jobar> right |
<Jobar> that's the issue I guess |
<My76Strat> ok you have created an article |
<My76Strat> where do you want the page to be? |
<My76Strat> A user page in that name? |
<Jobar> I think what I'll do is move my discussion back to my user page ... and then just create the article |
<Jobar> or keep the article, whichever |
<Jobar> I was looking for a way to merge the two |
<Jobar> user page and article |
<My76Strat> When you say you created a link I think you mean that you created an article? |
<Jobar> I guess... |
<Jobar> link to an article |
<Jobar> but the article was about me |
<My76Strat> So what is your user name? |
<My76Strat> Jobar? |
<My76Strat> Is that the username you want to edit under? |
<Jobar> Jaobar |
<Jobar> I'll just move everything back there |
<Jobar> since I've been using it for a while |
<My76Strat> no |
<Jobar> and then just leave the article |
<My76Strat> please |
<Jobar> what |
<My76Strat> I am just now sorting this |
<Jobar> oh ok |
<My76Strat> I am sorry I am just a bit confused |
<Jobar> no problem |
<Jobar> let me try this on my own, I think I'll be alright |
<Jobar> let me come back if I can't figure it out, ok? |
<Jobar> I appreciate your help |
<My76Strat> Because the article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_A._Obar is about you correct? |
<My76Strat> I appreciate your question |
<Jobar> yes |
<Jobar> I just moved everything back to Jaobar |
Ok he made this move back. |
<Jobar> and will now edit the Jonathan article and leave it |
<Jobar> thanks again |
<My76Strat> wait |
<My76Strat> so do you no longer want an article titled Jonathan A. Obar? |
<My76Strat> I see that you moved but now we have to deal with the redirect left behind. |
<Jobar> right |
<Jobar> how do we do that |
<My76Strat> i got it |
<Jobar> ok |
<Jobar> thanks very much |
thanks me very much and I am off to CSD r2 I think. |
I got it tagged and I am back |
The conversation continues: |
<Jobar> looks like it's figured out |
<My76Strat> no but maybe |
I said that because I wasn't 100% sure if things were as he was trying to get them. I mean he moved his own article back and I knew, if he did actually want an article we would have to get the redirect out of there first. so I want to try and see If I am still confused, which I was, because nothing he had ever said sounded like moving back was his intention. And if having it back to a user page was what he wanted why move it in the first place. So I figured if we could sort these misunderstandings maybe I could send him out of there at least having accomplished whatever he was trying to do. while I looked at the pages to see what I could figure out from looking at them, well I noticed the topic of our continued conversation: |
<My76Strat> because you just copied the information back into the article. |
<Jobar> perfect |
<Jobar> thanks man |
this guy loves thanking me for the things he has done. |
<My76Strat> I asked you "so do you no longer want an article titled Jonathan A. Obar?" |
<Jobar> the link works now |
<My76Strat> It's not perfect |
in response to where he had just replied perfect |
<My76Strat> and you have your userpage? |
<Jobar> yes |
<Jobar> one problem remains it appears |
<Jobar> discussion page on Jonathan A Obar is jaobar discussion page |
<My76Strat> yes |
<Jobar> not a huge deal |
<My76Strat> well that is because you didn't move but rather copied it |
<My76Strat> I can get this fixed for you if you like |
<Jobar> great |
By now I had vested way more time than I intended and way more time than it would have ever taken but I was pretty determined that if he would give me a chance I could get what he was trying to do accomplished correctly, with the correct histories where the belonged and what ever else he was trying to to I mean he asked me to help him and kind of sabotaged my efforts along the way. Until now I hadn't done a thing |
<Jobar> great |
<My76Strat> or as you said it's not a biggy |
<My76Strat> ok please don't do anything for a few minutes. |
<My76Strat> you want it fixed correctly right? |

<My76Strat> yayyy |
<Jobar> we can start the article fresh if you like |
<My76Strat> start my 3 minutes now |
Ok this is where I began to do a few things. I hope you are fully with me on what is the situation right now but I will also refresh: some things. OK he moved his article back to his user space leaving a redirect. He says hes great and doesn't need the article so I put a CSD tag on it. He then pastes the contented of the article back in removing the tag. But he didn't get the article history on the new article he figured he had created. I tell him it is because he pasted instead of move. I finally makes it clear that he wants to edit from user Jacob with the content of user jacob moved to the article but without the talkpage. So I am back to needing deletion of the same redirect I tried to request 30 to 40 minutes prior. only now instead of being only a redirect it has article looking content. A copyvio in the truest sense because it was without attribution. All I wanted to do by now is get this thing done. so I blanked the page. I remember thinking I probably should have asked him to delete the page so I could tag user blanked, Then I thought about the potential an admin would not understand why it was me who blanked and tagged. but I also intended to fetch a handy admin from one of the other channel I was in to get this page deleted so I could do the move. I reached an admin had this brief conversation: |
<Jobar> though I'm looking now and the discussion page on the article still redirects .... oh ok |

So my page is deleted and I move the content of his user page which is the article he moved there way back. making sure not to move the talkpage because he stated he wanted to start with a clean talkpage. |

I went to his user page replaced the redirect information with ok so it wouldn't be blank. I thought about a template but I was trying to get this done and back to my RfA. so ok was a quick way to keep it from being blank and effectively I was done and he had what he wanted. Here is where it starts getting fun. I go back to my RfA only to find Logan had moved from support to oppose. You think maybe my misstep in IRC might have drawn his ire. I am thinking maybe. and there is the issue of some of the csd tags I need to put some perspective to. While I am trying to write some of these important things I get your message. It becomes immediately paramount that I try to prevent you from assuming that in actually I was some kind of imbecile. And I have probably taken way more than 20 minutes to explain. Thanks for giving me that extra time, I hope. Any way you tell me, where did I go wrong, I trying to help the guy? I doubt that. Maybe I didn't go wrong, please you tell me and like I said if your not convinced, revert everything back to what it was And I will honor your pronouncement and withdraw my RfA? I only say that and said that because what I know of you is a fair admin, who will admit if an action was reasonable or not. I don't know what has transpired since I left to gather these details, I only hope I don't return to find you sitting in oppose for whatever I had done. I don't really even have lots of time to review some of the diffs but I trust myself enough to expect there should have been some kind of edit summary to give some indication what I was doing. I mean if I delete a page to make way for a page move, A subsequent move just after a deletion isn't as hard to understand. If I didn't include a summary well maybe I've paid a penance in the time it's taken to compile this compared to an effective edit summary. Your probably in bed by now but do know that I an interested in hearing your thoughts regarding this whenever you might respond. Jobar continues: <Jobar> the info that was on Jaobar is now on Jonathan A Obar, and just today Jaobar the page was deleted <Jobar> ok <Jobar> so, when I click on my username, I get to a page that says deleted <Jobar> g6 or whatever <Jobar> so what should I do <Jobar> to link my username to Jonathan A Obar <My76Strat> where does your username appear as Jobar? <Jobar> Jaobar <Jobar> At the top of the page when I log in <Jobar> it is also my login name <My76Strat> can you paste a link? <Jobar> to what <Jobar> the Jaobar page? <Jobar> the helpmebot posted a link <Jobar> ^ <My76Strat> right it is deleted <Jobar> right <Jobar> if you look what it says on the page it says <My76Strat> So you want two accounts? <Jobar> * 01:27, 9 March 2011 Alexf (talk | contribs) deleted "User talk:Jaobar" (G6: Housekeeping and routine (non-controversial) cleanup) <My76Strat> yes I saw <Jobar> # 07:53, 7 March 2011 Jaobar (talk | contribs) moved User talk:Jaobar to Talk:Jonathan A. Obar (revert) <Jobar> No <Jobar> perhaps incorrectly I moved all the info and discussion from Jaobar to Jonathan A Obar <Jobar> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_A._Obar <My76Strat> You moved it? <Jobar> yes, because I created a link [[Jonathan A. Obar] <Jobar> on a few pages which linked to nothing <Jobar> so I created the page <Jobar> and figured that everything should be stored there... maybe I should just have the two pages then? <My76Strat> right <Jobar> one with the info and one with my account? <My76Strat> !userinfo Jonathan A. Obar <Helpmebot> There is no such user 'Jonathan A. Obar'. <Jobar> right <Jobar> that's the issue I guess <My76Strat> ok you have created an article <My76Strat> where do you want the page to be? <My76Strat> A user page in that name? <Jobar> I think what I'll do is move my discussion back to my user page ... and then just create the article <Jobar> or keep the article, whichever <Jobar> I was looking for a way to merge the two <Jobar> user page and article <My76Strat> When you say you created a link I think you mean that you created an article? <Jobar> I guess... <Jobar> link to an article <Jobar> but the article was about me <My76Strat> So what is your user name? <My76Strat> Jobar? <My76Strat> Is that the username you want to edit under? <Jobar> Jaobar <Jobar> I'll just move everything back there <Jobar> since I've been using it for a while <My76Strat> no <Jobar> and then just leave the article <My76Strat> please <Jobar> what <My76Strat> I am just now sorting this <Jobar> oh ok <My76Strat> I am sorry I am just a bit confused <Jobar> no problem <Jobar> let me try this on my own, I think I'll be alright <Jobar> let me come back if I can't figure it out, ok? <Jobar> I appreciate your help <My76Strat> Because the article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_A._Obar is about you correct? <My76Strat> I appreciate your question <Jobar> yes <Jobar> I just moved everything back to Jaobar Ok he made this move back.
<Jobar> and will now edit the Jonathan article and leave it <Jobar> thanks again <My76Strat> wait <My76Strat> so do you no longer want an article titled Jonathan A. Obar? <My76Strat> I see that you moved but now we have to deal with the redirect left behind. <Jobar> right <Jobar> how do we do that <My76Strat> i got it <Jobar> ok <Jobar> thanks very much
thanks me very much and I am off to CSD r2 I think.
I got it tagged and I am back
The conversation continues:
<Jobar> looks like it's figured out
<My76Strat> no but maybe
I said that because I wasn't 100% sure if things were as he was trying to get them. I mean he moved his own article back and I knew, if he did actually want an article we would have to get the redirect out of there first. so I want to try and see If I am still confused, which I was, because nothing he had ever said sounded like moving back was his intention. And if having it back to a user page was what he wanted why move it in the first place. So I figured if we could sort these misunderstandings maybe I could send him out of there at least having accomplished whatever he was trying to do. while I looked at the pages to see what I could figure out from looking at them, well I noticed the topic of our continued conversation:
<My76Strat> because you just copied the information back into the article. <Jobar> perfect <Jobar> thanks man
this guy loves thanking me for the things he has done. <My76Strat> I asked you "so do you no longer want an article titled Jonathan A. Obar?" <Jobar> the link works now <My76Strat> It's not perfect
in response to where he had just replied perfect <My76Strat> and you have your userpage? <Jobar> yes <Jobar> one problem remains it appears <Jobar> discussion page on Jonathan A Obar is jaobar discussion page <My76Strat> yes <Jobar> not a huge deal <My76Strat> well that is because you didn't move but rather copied it <My76Strat> I can get this fixed for you if you like
<Jobar> great
By now I had vested way more time than I intended and way more time than it would have ever taken but I was pretty determined that if he would give me a chance I could get what he was trying to do accomplished correctly, with the correct histories where the belonged and what ever else he was trying to to I mean he asked me to help him and kind of sabotaged my efforts along the way. Until now I hadn't done a thing <Jobar> great <My76Strat> or as you said it's not a biggy <My76Strat> ok please don't do anything for a few minutes. <My76Strat> you want it fixed correctly right? -->| SMasters (~SMasters@wikipedia/SMasters) has joined #wikipedia-en-classroom =-= Mode #wikipedia-en-classroom +v SMasters by ChanServ <Jobar> no problem <Jobar> I see it's just redirecting <My76Strat> k give me three minutes <My76Strat> does this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Jaobar go with the article or the userpage? <Jobar> yes <Jobar> that's the page that gets redirected <My76Strat> yes with the article or yes with the userpage <My76Strat> When I am done you will still have user:Jobar as you account, correct. <Jobar> yes <Jobar> with the userpage <Jobar> please <Jobar> the discussion for Jonathan A Obar should be new <My76Strat> new at the article? <Jobar> yes <My76Strat> the one that has all the comments stays at you user talk page <My76Strat> And you can do whatever you want with it <My76Strat> The article starts fresh <My76Strat> Do I finally have it? <Jobar> right <My76Strat> yayyy <Jobar> we can start the article fresh if you like <My76Strat> start my 3 minutes now
Ok this is where I began to do a few things. I reached an admin had this brief conversation:
<Jobar> though I'm looking now and the discussion page on the article still redirects .... oh ok <Jobar> cool <My76Strat> bare with me <My76Strat> almost done <Jobar> no rush <My76Strat> The only rush is that I said give me three minutes <Jobar> k <My76Strat> cause you almost left three times <Jobar> still here <My76Strat> yep <SMasters> Jobar, are you teaching Group 18 - Media cross-ownership - as well? <Jobar> All groups from TC 210 are in my class <Jobar> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_United_States_Public_Policy/Courses/Media_and_Telecommunication_Policy_spring_2011_(Obar) -->| sonia (~sonara@wikipedia/sonia) has joined #wikipedia-en-classroom =-= Mode #wikipedia-en-classroom +v sonia by ChanServ <Jobar> how can I help? <sonia> hi all :) <My76Strat> ok i think you are good <SMasters> OK, I am helping those is Group 18 and have written to them but there's no reply and no activity. Good to know. <Jobar> Strat, all good <Jobar> thanks again <Jobar> SM, did they write on your talk page? <SMasters> No contact from any of them yet. <SMasters> And no start on the article. <Jobar> ok, thanks for letting me know <Jobar> by 3/15 someone should contact you, part of an assignment <SMasters> I'm not complaining. Just wondering what was happening. <Jobar> undergrads <My76Strat> I put a link to your article on your talkpage. <SMasters> :) <Jobar> If any of the online mentors have concerns, please feel free to contact me, either through WP or via email, I've posted my email on the course talk page <Jobar> night |<-- Jobar has left freenode (Quit: Page closed)
Can I ask an admin favor?
<Logan_> My76Strat: just ask :P
<Logan_> !noq >My76Strat
Notice I reached admin Logan, I made a small error of asking for and admin instead of just throwing the question out there. But If I couldn't talk to an admin I was really just wasting more time. and Logan gives me the proverbial smack on the hand with the bot message
<Helpmebot> My76Strat: No need to say "I have a question," or ask "Is anyone around," or "Can anyone help." Just ask the question, and someone will help you if they can. Thanks :-) So I try to lay it out there <My76Strat> Please delete http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_A._Obar for a page move <Logan_> looks like Alison already did it
By now Alison had reacted to the tag, great. spitfire throws her nod my way <SpitfireWP> My76Strat, why not just wait a week and do it yourself? :) -->| Netalarm (~Netalarm@adsl-108-82-71-198.dsl.emhril.sbcglobal.net) has joined #wikipedia-en-help |<-- Netalarm has left freenode (Changing host) -->| Netalarm (~Netalarm@Wikimedia/Netalarm) has joined #wikipedia-en-help =-= Mode #wikipedia-en-help +v Netalarm by ChanServ <My76Strat> ok cool
Which I reply to spitfire here <My76Strat> cause I promised this guy if he would give me three minutes I could get it done =-= AFK is now known as [AFK|Sleep] and here is the summary of it all
<My76Strat> It took and hour to figure out what he actually wanted <My76Strat> any way times ticking
Best regards My76Strat 07:32, 9 March 2011 (UTC)
