Other neat portal ideas for longer term
- Longer term ideas to think about from other portals:
- Events section, like: "On this day" e.g., Biography, Religion, United States; "Selected anniversaries" e.g., War; "Calendar" at Holidays. Interesting idea of "Month selected anniversaries", at Oregon.
- Model intro with some rotating images, after Portal:Oregon, Portal:Indiana, Portal:Iceland/Intro and Portal:Philosophy of science/Intro.
- Revamp DYK sections w/ free-use images, model after Portal:Criminal justice and Portal:Oregon.
- Portal palettes at User:RichardF/Palettes/Portals. Comparable color schemes can be developed from the various hue lists at User:RichardF/Palettes. Also see Portal:Box-header.
- If there are a lot of categories, then categories section to 2 columns, like in Portal:Indiana.
- Also take some time to check out style/formatting at Portal:Indiana Cirt (talk)
Note to self
- Template:Citation
- Template:Harvnb
- Example: <ref name="REFNAME">{{Harvnb|LAST|YEAR|p=PAGENUMBER}}</ref>

Dispatch
Cirt, Awadewit suggested that you might be interested in writing a Signpost Dispatch article on Featured portals (the only area of featured content we haven't covered). Sample previous articles are at {{FCDW}}. We've covered:
- Featured content overview
- Peer review
- Did you know
- Featured lists
- Good articles
- Featured sounds
- Featured topics
- Images
- TFA
- And Featured articles many times: Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2008-07-21/Dispatches, Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2008-04-07/Dispatches, Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2008-10-13/Dispatches
None of them start out looking like that: if an editor initially just chunks in some text, many others chip in to tweak it up to Signpost standards. For example, someone wrote this, which Karanacs, Royalbroil and I turned into this, so if you just chunk in some text as a start, others can help finish it off. Another example, I put in this outline, and Karanacs brought it up to this. Other editors have written almost complete and clean Dispatches without much need for other editing. If you're interested, please weigh in and coordinate at WT:FCDW In case you're interested, you could just begin sandboxing something at WP:FCDW/Portals and pop over to WT:FCDW to leave a note when you're ready for others to help out. Thanks for deleting my bio from Wikipedia; and I mean that sincerely. I agree that I am not in any way noteworthy enough to warrant my own wikipedia bio. Keep up the good work! Steve Dillard —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sladillard (talk • contribs)
SSP for highfructosecornsyrup
Hi. I noticed you were looking for more input on this SSP case. Am I correct in understanding that the only editor left in question is User:Shrampes? How can I help? Is there any information not on the case thread that I should know? ~SunDragon34 (talk) 22:11, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
- Well, I've been looking at it...and I can't find a connection using my usual tactics, except that both Shrampes and HFCS/Wikipediatrix edited the Dianetics article, and that Shrampes started editing at about the same time that Wikipediatrix's editing tapered off. Although Shrampes did edit the HFCS article, s/he also edits a lot of other articles on complex molecules, like polyurethane, tetrachloroethylene, and polyfluorene. Honestly, I can't say that Shrampes is a sock of Wikipediatrix...if s/he is, then she's been incredibly careful about it. For now, I'd say to let Shrampes off the hook and wait until time tells us more. ~SunDragon34 (talk) 23:14, 5 December 2008 (UTC)
- You have a point. I filed a checkuser per the suggestion on the case page. That should wrap things up, I guess. ~SunDragon34 (talk) 00:07, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- Okay. Thanks for fixing that. ~SunDragon34 (talk) 00:15, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

Ohai Cirt, I see that you have a lot of featured content, which means you have experience with article writing and expanding articles -- getting them featured. I'd like you to check out the WikiCup, beginning in January for the fourth cup. ayematthew ✡ 23:19, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

Just to check you've reviewed the talk page and AN threads and are aware of the massive collateral damage (i.e. hundreds of thousands of users) blocking this particular IP causes right now. Thanks, Brilliantine (talk) 21:23, 5 December 2008 (UTC)
- I checked it over and decided on a short duration of 3 hours. Cirt (talk) 21:25, 5 December 2008 (UTC)
- Obviously it's your call - personally I feel there was a faint consensus on the AN thread not to do so unless absolutely necessary, but I can see that others might interpret that differently. I'd also like to draw your attention to Funpika's post just now on that thread that complicates matters somewhat.
- Thanks for taking the time to respond. Brilliantine (talk) 21:36, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

everything I said
is pertinent to the page content. maybe you don't like the format of my post. perhaps the info I ask for and who I ask for it from irks a policy. please don't direct these feelings to me, but participate in the shaping of the content of the article. that's where the action is. I should know that I "misused the talk page" with a mind to being more respectful of the purpose of talk pages in the future is... I'm asleep already. people go off topic all the time. I just did it hard and fast this time. it's still pertinent. I guess there's been a chronic thing at this page. well, ok- but I had a real question and I guess since [[image talk:]] isn't used, I didn't know where to- thanks contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit. Then Tiptoety should have made sure not to change the block reason when he extended the block, nor put the {{open proxy}} on the page. Just because someone's using an IP abusively does not make it an open proxy. This is not the first time I've unblocked an IP after another admin decided that since someone was using an IP abusively it had to be an open proxy, only to have the actual test for open proxies come back negative following an unblock request on those grounds. We cannot afford to misuse or use an OP block in any way that could be seen as punitive or reckless, since that's the only grounds we have to block an IP indefinitely. It makes all of us look bad. It would be like someone without Checkuser claiming "Checkuser has proved you are so-and-so's sock" only to have an actual Checkuser come back as "unrelated".
Anyway, mild rant done. What's the evidence of abusive use of this IP? Not that I doubt you, I would just feel better about this situation if I knew what it was. Daniel Case (talk) 22:29, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. Oh, God ... something Scientology-connected. I'll take your word for it there. The things I don't miss out on by editing mainly non-controversial articles. Daniel Case (talk) 22:44, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
Hello
Dear Cirt, thanks for the welcome and informative rules you sent me the other day. Did I do ok on the other two edits? Those did not seem genuine so I tried to undo them. You might be interested to know that I am from the Church of Scientology and came here to look around, based on a recent request from one of our members. I would be interested to find out what rules and regulations are most important to know and you seem to be a active editor on the subject. Can you help me? Further, I am aware (or have been told, rather), that I should stand back from editing due to a potential "Conflict of Interest". It would be very appreciated if you could give me information about that. Thank you very much in advance! Edit Protect
hello, thanks for that change on that italian template. Although I think you removed too many lines, I just need the line removed from <includeonly> and {{Navbox. (Here for reference.) I'm concerned that it will become to esoteric for editors at its present state. Also, there's no history of vandalism on the template. Why the protection?96.53.149.117 (talk) 07:15, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
- But it is against wikipedia policy to
protectpreemptively protect. In this case, there was no history of vandalism, so this is a criterion not to protect the template.96.53.149.117 (talk) 08:08, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, and thank you for unprotecting the page the 1st time; it did fix the problem.96.53.149.117 (talk) 08:09, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
- Is there any way to put those spaces back? I just need the include only without a space before the {{.96.53.149.117 (talk) 08:11, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
- That is absolutely perfect. Thanks. Now about the protection, that was a pain in the neck, lol. What is the reason behind the protection?96.53.149.117 (talk) 08:20, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
Jive Aces
An article on the jazz band The Jive Aces was in WP until recently. Looks like it's been removed. How can I find out what the reasons for its removal were? Does WP keep a 'removed articles' log? Johnalexwood (talk) 17:47, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
