I noticed that both Netaji and Holywarrior have been blocked. While I'll talk about Netaji later, I am troubled by Holywarrior's constant defiance to admin authority. Here, in the diff I provide, he has stated that he will ignore admin warnings and continue to vandalize the articles. I believe that his sentence should be extended for threatening vandalism so that he may have some more time to cool off and contribute meaningfully to wikipedia. Please let me know what you think. |

I am really amazed how all Indian disputed end up at your page. This "Cool as a Cucumber" award is in appreciation of the excellent work you are doing. Tell me when you stand for ArbCom! :)- Aksi_great (talk - review me) 15:06, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

- Yep! You've been a wonderful admin. I dont think any of the Indian admins have been confronted with as many disputes as you have. You certainly deserve this. You certainly are the coolest! -- thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK17:13, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

- The pains you take is appreciable.Dont know if you have visited India but perhaps your introduction to this country has not been so inviting..This is just one part of life..India is full of great surprises TerryJ-Ho
- I still intend to go to India someday. It's still on my userpage list for the travel part. I was aware of the large diversity of political, religious and linguistic views in India and regionalism before I got here. It's not like Australia where there are two political parties, one language, more or less one religion,..etc. Blnguyen | rant-line 03:03, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
- It isn't as conflicting as it appears on Wikipedia. Most people in India are tolerant of other faiths. Many Hindus and Sikhs go to Gurudwaras and Mandirs respectively. They also are proud of the Taj Mahal. All the Jews and Parsis while escaping persecution came to India because of its tolerance of different cultures. The diversity is in fact one of the most beautiful things about the nation. GizzaChat © 07:22, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
- No, of course not, people get on well, amazingly so - India is probably one of the few countries, if not the only one where people from minority groups are voluntarily allowed anywhere near leadership positions, let alone hold them such as Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and the Muslim president. For many countries things are so politicised I don't think that a minority group would even be allowed to become a captain of a sport team like Mansoor Ali Khan or Mohammad Azharuddin. But WP does provide an irresistably opportunity to try and push POV and soapbox for those who are unfond the wonderful linguistic and religious mosaic of India. Hanoi Blogs
Hi,
I added links to Hanoi-related blogs on the Wiki "Hanoi" page, but these were deleted (I've re-added them since) in a revert. Since, according to Wikipedia, "Reverting should be used primarily for fighting vandalism," could you please explain this? Blogs by expats and locals provide valuable insight into the culture of a city and are an increasingly important feature of the WWW that people are coming to rely on for information. Thus, well-known blogs associated with any particular topic should be included on Wikipedia. The blogs I added are purely informational, non-commercial sites and are important to the Hanoi/Vietnam Internet culture for many.
Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hanoian (talk • contribs)
- Hello. Rollback is also used for deleting suspected linkspam. I looked at the blog and there were three posts in four months, which tells me that they are not notable, unless stated otherwise. Thanks, Blnguyen | rant-line 01:14, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply. Only one of the blogs has so few posts because I accidently posted the old link; the others are very frequently updated and visited and are written by people who have interesting and important things to say about Hanoi--even Harvard's Global Voices links to three of them! I will update the link to one of them and hopefully you will allow them to remain on the page:) I was hoping to add more important blogs to the list by people who live/travel in/to Hanoi. Thank you.
I have been too busy to login to wikipedia for a while, but when I looked for my page on BAP System, I couldn't find it. There was no record of it in my profile and I am sure it used to be there. There are still references to it. When I asked what happened, I was told that you deleted it due to a copyright problem for some image?!
I don't remember adding any image to it and I am wondering what image it was and why the image couldn't just have been deleted if there was indeed some image. Just deleting the entire page seems pretty drastic, especially since a lot of other pages link to it.
I apologize if I am not following the proper protocol as I have not had the time to become familiar with all the netiquette here, so if I did something wrong, please let me know. Is there a way to get the page back or do I have to write a new one?
Clint - Clint Ballard 02:18, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
So, you are saying it was deleted because it wasn't notable enough? I just found out that this happened and was not notified about any pending review period. While there have only been around half a dozen tournaments run with it, that is more than the Sophia rules. The BAP only applies to chess masters, so it is a relatively small universe. Have you polled chess masters to see if they know about BAP?
The following players are attending the GM Slugfest
GM Victor Mikhalevski 2670, top GM from Israel GM Varuzhan Akobian <http://www.akobian.com> 2660, world open winner GM Alexander Shabalov 2653, multiple time us champion GM Lubomir Ftacnik 2600, chessbase.com advisor GM Dmitry Gurevich 2583 GM Greg Serper 2575 IM Eric Tangborn 2475 IM John Donaldson 2452, captain of US olympic team
These are many of the top players in the country and even from over seas. There has been much discussion about it and the USCF board acknowledged that BAP tournaments can be rated.

Chessninja, Boylston and Chessmind are the top 3 chess blogs. How much more notoriety is needed? This is an obscure alternative to a way of scoring chess games. Not exactly front page news. Shouldn't top chess players be consulted about this? Who exactly determined that it was not well known enough? Do they even play competitive chess? Are they a master? Do they have an anti-BAP agenda like most chessplayers appear to?
I thought Wikipedia was not into censoring stuff that was not liked by the establishment.
Clint Clint Ballard 04:34, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
P.S. There are only about 60 GM's in the entire United States, so 10% of them are playing in the BAP based GM Slugfest. Does it have to be 100%?

Blngyuen, thanks for choosing my DYK again. I must, however, express my deepest shock with the fact that it is not Matra Rancho but Ludwika Maria Gonzaga. What in the world was wrong with the Matra? And why again are DYKs from remote dates chosen rather than the oldest? I must say that if it was up to me, I would have chosen the Rancho over Ludwika Maria anytime, as I am really fond of my car DYKes, and Ludwika Maria was just a side job when I had no idea what car to expand/create an article on that time (and to add some diversity to my noms). There isn't a car DYK this time, there wasn't one before. In fact there isn't a single one on post-war France which could be seen as interfering with its topic. I am doing my best to submit articles which are quite expanded and to provide adequate photos, which sometimes takes me some time, and I really can't understand why I got passed over without a word of prior warning this time... :( Bravada, talk - 09:30, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
PS. The Rancho was create actually on the 23rd August my time (but 22nd your time, presumably, which is why I nominated it for that day), so it might still be eligible...
- I mean, it was in the 22nd section then, as I see most updating admins are from the time zone where it was the 22nd when I finished creating it and I tried to stick with "your" time when nomintaing (I tend to create most articles in the beginning of the "next day" my time). I used the dateline trick to reinstate it :D My problem is that when you pass a nomination, you should have a reasonf or that. The Rancho was gently and quietly sitting there for five days and nobody said a bad word about it, and then it suddenly gets skipped in favor or Ludwika Maria, who pops out of the blue. I see the rule of selecting the oldest noms first getting increasingly neglected and I believe it is a bad thing. If you believe the Rancho DYK is still not fit, do give me your opinion on what could be done better, and I'll try to fix it. Otherwise, please do not pass it next time (actually, of all the five oldest noms w/o "gripes", this is the only one with a pic, so I guess it could make a nice "standard bearer"). Regards, Bravada, talk - 23:45, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- Well thanks for saying that, but I am just one pesky user with a DYK fetish :D I also don't think I would make a good admin for a number of reasons, limited and irregular availability of time for the Wiki stuff included. I actually looked at some RfAs of some users around here out of curiosity sometime ago and I believe most of the people usually voting would be against, given what criteria they use (and I guess they are right in what they do). Last but not least, I believe that selecting one's own DYK nominations for DYK is rather improper. That said, BigHaz might be a much better prospective admin, give his reliability, unfalteringly kind manners and willingness to perform tidious and repetitive tasks. Bravada, talk - 00:11, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- Need more administrators who write, definitely. Blnguyen | rant-line 01:34, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- Now I think I have broken all records in "unethically pushing for own nom and image to appear in DYK", but thanks anyway! As a way of expressing gratitude, I wanted to dispense the notices you asked for in your edit summary, but seems like Samir got me halfway. You might want to check whether everything is OK in my edit history immediately prior to this entry. Regards, Bravada, talk - 02:02, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Images on DYK/the Main Page
If you are going to become fairly active in updating DYK, please remember to protect images that appear on this template. Anything that appears on the main page should be protected to prevent repeated vandalism and keep our welcome mat clean. See (WP:PPOL#Images protected while on the Main Page and Wikipedia:Main Page FAQ#Why am I not able to edit the Main Page? for more information).
The protection template for main page images is {{mprotected}}. However, there may be some that are actually stored on Commons — for those, you should upload a temporary copy here onto Wikipedia and add {{C-uploaded}}. Yes I would definitely be intereseted. By the way, on a side note, could you be my admin coach if you have the time? For example, from time to time, you could make a detailed analysis about my edits and point out to me any of your concerns regarding this. Moreover, you could also advise me on the proper time to run for adminship again after three failures. You could also guide me to make my edits more constructive to further this purpose and make me a better editor of Wikipedia. Thank you so much for offering a listening ear in this matter and best of luck for the future! I believe that one of the other goals of Wikipedia is to create more competent Wikipedians as well. Excuse me for pestering you, as I said I couldn't find anybody else online (and seems like NOBODY reads Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors!!!) and I didn't want the poor Tagora to ruin the mainpage totally for 24 hours. - PS. One thing occurred to me - I was quite surprised to see the Fiat 130 selected, as chronologically this was my latest nomination, a second car and Fiat in a row and that all on a day when a car is featured, but then I figured out that it was simply the last on the 27th or 28th and you ran out of earlier noms. This makes me wonder whether the "place your noms at the end of the date section" rule makes any sense, as then you end up taking the most recent noms first, rather than the other way around.

I have defended my case in the above post.
I have noticed this unfortunate trend of users getting other users blocked just by putting complaints without proper investigation even though complaints made against them may be unjustified. I'd like your advice on how I should deal with this matter. Thank you and have a nice day.Hkelkar 15:53, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

Analyse my edits
Hello! I hope you are doing fine. I would like to humbly ask you to analyse critically and without any reservations about the edits I made for the past one or two weeks. Please inform me about the areas which I need to improve. Your comments would be deeply appreciated as well. Hope that you can help. You could also refer this message to other admins that you think could help me as well. In this way, I would be having the different opinions from various admins. Thank you for your kind attention! (Note:You can do this whenever you are free or feel like it, so take as much time as you want! No need to rush!) I have also started using image tags as well for a better understanding of image policy on untagged images. --Siva1979Talk to me 21:21, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
>> He is a left-handed batsman and is of a very short stature of 160cm.
What is the source for his height ? I had been looking around for this without success. Ramnath Parkar (5' 3") is the shortest Indian cricketer among those who played before 1980, and since then Patel is the only one of a similar height. It is possible that Patel grew up a few centimeters since his debut in 2002 so it is imporant to know when this came out.

Out of curiosity, I've just noticed some inconsistencies with the way you've been writing these up (specifically with Bravada's infobox). In the case of "The Voice", the infobox registered a semi-final position of 2 and a score of something or another, which is wrong since there obviously wasn't a semi-final in that year. In the case of "Shir Habatlanim", you'd written the article up with the song being in Hebrew (which is correct) but listed it in the infobox as being in German. I'm assuming this is just the result of being an admin and writing quality articles. BigHaz 09:06, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

Discretion blocks by Admins RfC
FYI, I compiled a new RfC on the use of administrator privileges entitled Discretion blocks by Admins. As the issue involves one of your blocks, I am informing you about it and, if you feel like responding, invite you to do that.
I'd like to reiterate that, as I wrote in the RfC, I have no personal grudge to you for blocking me and I have no doubt that your act did not involve any foul play on your part. Nevertheless, I respectfully disagree with a particular action of yours, and, most importantly, I think the issue of admin's discretion block needs to be urgently addressed as we need to find a middle ground between admin's being too indecisive that may lead to Wikipedia becoming a trollfest (something that was happening as recently as several months ago) on one side and avoiding to hurt the legitimate development of the articles, and, especially, insult editors unnecessarily through unneeded blocks imposed in haste.
My intention is solely to draw the community attention to this important issue and in no way is directed against you in person. Nor do I challenge your fitness to continue to exercise your admin discretion to help make a better Wikipedia.
Respectfully, --Irpen 22:58, 31 August 2006 (UTC)
The Voice
Not sure what you meant when you mentioned the source, but the problem is that the paragraph read quite POV. I am especially disturbed by the notion that the Ireland's wins were "out of touch" - I remember that this kind of music was very popular at that time, and Irish flutes were absolutely everywhere. Katrina's winning song in 1997 isn't that different, actually, and Ireland still came strong second.
Secondly, not every country did a televote in 1997, it was a gradual process. I believe there were quite many reasons for the inclusion of televote, so this hypothesis, even sourced, seems quite suspicious to me - perhaps somebody really didn't like the Irish songs (I mean, I don't either, but I don't think it's the right way to pursue one's agenda). I guess the only reliable source would be one officially linked to the ESC or EBU - for example, there are official sources stating that some countries skipped one contest in the 70s because they were dissatisified with the four-way tie. If there is an OFFICIAL source saying that televoting was introduced because of the dissatisfaction with Ireland's fourth win, this can be included (though I believe the song's article is not the right place to do do, it would be better if the general Eurovision article and the 1997 Contest one said that). But by no means should the expression of somebody's dislike of a musical genre have place in any article.
Regards, Bravada, talk - 23:44, 31 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hmm, how about I publish a book and say that Ruslana won because she was wearing no underwear (this was a very widespread rumor among detractors), as I really hated her winning over the fabulous Lena Philipsson (if you'd ask me, Brian Kennedys and Johnny Logan should perish without a trace but Melodifestivalen artists should be worshipped daily). Even if he calls his book "official history", he is no EBU, or no national broadcaster. I guess as every author he is trying to add "flavor" to his story. I see that the (featured, after all) Eurovision article quotes the same book when saying that the 1997 was the first year of televoting, but all else is skipped. I would say we should follow this good example. Regards, Bravada, talk - 00:02, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

Its getting positively nasty over there. User:Kennethtennyson vandalized the page here [2]and blanked his own talk page [3] . He also threatened me with a block (even tho he's not an admin) [4] and [5] he's being incivil.
Hi Blnguyen, you blocked User:Netscott recently for one week for persistent 3RR violations. Unfortunately, an editor who was involved in the content dispute on Netscott's side unblocked him and reduced the block to 24 hours. Netscott has spent the last few days doing almost nothing but troll regarding the same issue, and it has now gotten out of hand. I can't take admin action myself as I'm involved in the dispute. Would you please take a look at the situation and consider reinstating your block? WP:AN/I#User:Netscott. Many thanks, SlimVirgin (talk) 03:24, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for your note. It's probably best to keep it centralized on AN/I. The only reason I didn't bring up the block shortening before is that the admin who unblocked said he had discussed it with you. This is no longer about the shortening in itself, but about the further trolling that has taken place, which is among the worst I've seen on Wikipedia, so it's best to put it on AN/I. Cheers, SlimVirgin (talk) 03:33, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
- Hi again. Actually, Bastique discussed it on IRC with Pschemp and a few other admins, unblocked, and then notified me on my talk page, then I went to IRC, was shown the parts of the conversation, and didn't wheel war because I've already had my "serving" so to speak and there was a consensus to not do so, although I am still puzzled that 5++ 3RR blocks only incur 1 day. JoshuaZ and Bakasuprman thought the block was OK though. Unfortunately, it was never disclosed to me that Bastique had himself edited the article in question. Thanks again, Blnguyen | rant-line 03:37, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
- Would you please look at the situation again and reconsider? SlimVirgin (talk) 03:40, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
- Hello again. I'm a bit confused about the last response. In the previous post I was referring to the fact that I wouldn't wheel-war with the others last Friday over the 3RR block, but regarding this new matter described at ANI I will definitely look into it (if I gave the impression that I wasn't going to). Thanks, Blnguyen | rant-line 03:43, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

- Thank you. I appreciate that. It's literally intolerable. SlimVirgin (talk) 03:46, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
Yes, of course User:Bastique was involved in the same edit warring, on the side of Netscott; see this and this for example, and compare them with this earlier edit by Netscott. Yet even after edit-warring on Netscott's side, he still unblocked him and re-blocked him for a shorter period. Jayjg (talk) 03:30, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
- Funny how it's edit-warring when you disagree with Jayjg, but it's "contributions" when you agree with him. Also funny how I notice people are talking about me only by reading Wikipedia Review. Thanks for being a friend. Bastique▼parler voir 21:39, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi Blnguyen - I request that you have a look this article and its talkpage. User:JFD is consistently breaking WP:CIVIL and WP:NPOV and now is making false accusations.[6] It baffles me that this fellow dragged my name into the dispute when I've never edited this article or interacted with him.

- Hi blnguyen, user JFD is actually not uncivil... the other user(s) have had a serious issue with POV and a serious issue with being uncivil on the page Indian martial arts... look at the last discussion and the archives and the wonderful headliners... basically, the article before JFD and i intervened stated that India was the birthplace of all martial arts, it stated taht the british were the cause of the downfall of indian martial arts, and it quoted the birth of martial arts from a generic sanskrit term for wrestling... without any citations of any article... i have tried to place disputed tags on the article in the past but user Freedom skies then removes them and denies that the dispute is ongoing... Kennethtennyson 22:56, 3 September 2006 (UTC)
- regardless, you recently blocked me for 3R on the article indian nationalism... just wanted to explain myself. I was merely attempting to leave disputed tags on an article that was blocked prior to this and remains in dispute... the problem with these tags for disputed articles and POV articles is that the people writing them are POV and thus tend to move the tags off the article... and then deny the existence of the dispute... wikipedia should have a policy where someone who is a member for at least 6 months can place the tag for 12 hours and if it is placed, it cannot be removed for 12 hours by anyone except the person placing the tag. Incidentally, I would like to mildly object to the closing of the afd on Vindhyachal House, though, in which you merely said that sockpuppets never prosper or something. There may have been a couple of socks there, but I think a few important points about notability were being raised -by more than one established user, incl myself - and should hsve been addressed by the closing admin or through relisting. You seem to be highly interested in India (as evidenced by your many edits etc.). May I ask, out of interest, why you have such Indophilia? This isn't an attack or anything, just curiosity.
I am troubled by recent developments
I noticed that both Netaji and Holywarrior have been blocked. While I'll talk about Netaji later, I am troubled by Holywarrior's constant defiance to admin authority. Here, in the diff I provide, he has stated that he will ignore admin warnings and continue to vandalize the articles. I believe that his sentence should be extended for threatening vandalism so that he may have some more time to cool off and contribute meaningfully to wikipedia. Please let me know what you think.
