The original tag for the file that I had placed in the description was [[commons:Template:PD-50]], because I'd read that copyright had expired in the UK after fifty years or so. I believe that I've also found an alternative at [[commons:Template:PD-UKGov]], which mentions the [[Crown copyright]] that you were talking about, but vaguely describes the file as an "artistic work" (though I reserve judgment on whether or not Churchill's speeches can be considered "artistic"). Unfortunately, it labeling the file as such, will also categorize it under [[:Category:UK Government images]], which is patently incorrect because the audio file is clearly not an "image". Lastly, [http://copyright.cornell.edu/resources/publicdomain.cfm this guide] to [[copyright in the United States]] may give details as to some sound recordings, but remains a bit vague to me as to what the difference(s) between foreign and US copyrights is/are. Nice picture
What you added to MacDonnell of the Glens is very nice. Exquisite in fact. But one thing... in the description you say they now live in Glenarm Castle, but they in fact do not, because those are not genuine MacDonnells. See Earl of Antrim for the story. I'm sure they're nice people, but a Royal license does not make it true. Those arms belong to another family. DinDraithou (talk) 01:31, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for fixing that! Again an exquisite picture. DinDraithou (talk) 17:26, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
Adam, here is the current coat of arms of McDonnell of Antrim [2]. You can see it's different. So I think the arms in the photo must belong, or belonged, to someone else. Maybe a previous earl, but who? Unless there's been some kind of screwup somewhere, and the arms belong to someone else. Any idea?--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 08:03, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
For heraldic purposes, they're the same. The blue and green are slightly more pastel in the Dunluce image, but the basic elements are the same. Ignoring the heraldic language, we have:
Upper left: Red lion on white. Upper right: white fist emerging from clouds, clutching a red cross, on blue. Lower left: black ship on a field with the upper yellow, lower blue. Lower right: Fish [colour a bit small to tell on website, blue and white on the plaque - may be given as whatever the mediaeval French for "natural colouring" is, which gives a bit of leeway] on a field white and green.
Heraldry allows a great deal of artistic interpretation of the elements shown, and all such changes as are seen between the two are perfectly acceptable variations in presentation. Adam Cuerden (talk) 17:07, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
- Just read the blazon if you're unsure of the visual differences. It simply doesn't correspond to the arms in the photo.
Quarterly, 1st, Argent, a lion rampant Gules, armed and holding in his dexter paw a thistle slipped Or; 2nd, Azure a dexter hand couped at the wrist fessways Argent holding a cross-crosslet fitched paleways Gules; 3rd, Or, in the sea proper a galley with her oars disposed saltireways Sable; 4th, Parted per fess waved Argent and Vert, in the centre a salmon naiant proper. Above the Shield a Helmet answerable to his high quality over the same a Marquess Coronet with a Mantle Gules doubled Ermine and torse of his colours is set for his Crest a hand erected the fist thereof being closed proper. Supported on the dexter by a savage wreathed about the head and middle with laurel and on the sinister by a falcon proper armed, jessed and belled Or. Motto in an Escrol above all VIS CONJUNCTA FORTIOR.
- The coat of arms in your photo doesn't have the golden thistle; the hand in the photo is actually issuing from a cloud, it isn't couped at the wrist; there aren't any oars in the galley (they're supposed to crossed); there isn't even a salmon, that's an heraldic dolphin. I'm pretty sure this is the coat of an earlier earl. We should figure out which one. It shouldn't be too hard, GoogleBooks will probably set us straight.--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 18:16, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
- I looked around a bit. Here' Burke's General Armory (1884), with the earl on this page: [3]. It's different again!
1st, or, a lion ramp. gul., 2nd, or, a dexter arm issuant from the sinister fess point out of a cloud ppr. in the hand a cross crosslet fitchee erect az., 3rd, ar. a lymphad, sails furled sa., 4th, per fesse az. and vert a dolphin naiant in fess ppr.
- The 4th quarter seems to match up with the photo at least (if the dolphin in the photo is indeed "proper"). So I guess in 1884, the earl had a different coat of arms than today. I have no idea why they kept changing things around. I've noticed this with some clan chiefs who have articles on Wikipedia too; like the MacLean and MacLeod chiefs have adapted their arms over the years, and for a time some articles were displaying the wrong ones. Heraldry is a personal thing. Maybe the photo shows the arms that were borne by members of the family prior to the title passing through the female line?--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 05:17, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

Alright, this afternoon I have finally received my copy of the following
- Curley, Walter J.P., Vanishing Kingdoms: The Irish Chiefs and their Families. Dublin: Lilliput Press. 2004. p. 64
The arms you snapped at the castle are virtually identical to those under the current MacDonnell of the Glens' portrait in the book. Only a few differences: the two bottom quarters or whatever they're called are solid colours, all white behind the ship and what looks like all medium-dark blue behind the creature. The creature is exactly the same type but its nose is pointing down and it is all light blue with no white. The top beam or whatever it's called that the sail hangs from on the ship is tilting in the other direction, and there is no rudder, but the little flags are still there. And yes the top right panel includes the clouds, although they're a little more expansive, and the hand is flesh not white too. DinDraithou (talk) 01:32, 14 September 2010 (UTC)
- Oh and also like at the castle the lion does not have that thing over its right front paw. Nothing there. DinDraithou (talk) 01:40, 14 September 2010 (UTC)
Just to clarify...
My latest comment is not meant as a "why don't you leave", but rather, as a "why do we limit our thinking"? I'm not necessarily 100% happy here either, along with, what, 90% of the wiki population? And it's as you say, the good people get worn out, and an ideal forum would avoid that happening. Papa Lima Whiskey (talk) 01:00, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

FL/FS mainpage stuff
Hi Adam. Thanks for your really helpful and constructive discussions at Talk:Main page. I am sorry if jumping on your bandwagon has caused any problems, that's the absolute last thing I ever wanted to do. I just thought if featured sounds could stand a chance on the mainpage, why not lists?! Anyway, should this prove to be a fruitful discussion, and evolve into working out things, I'd be grateful if you could continue in the same vain and talk things through with me as and when you need to, if you think it's important to FL on mainpage. In any case, thanks again for the work so far. The Rambling Man (talk) 19:35, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

FLs mainpaging
Heh, that's a funny crossover of posts. I just left this at WT:FLC. I think the idea of providing a good synopsis of the list is my preferred route (your option 1) because most of the lists promoted since the changes to the FL criteria would have a lead that generally matches a FA. For older lists then yes, a DYK-style "pick a few good facts" route is an option. However, right now, for our proposal, I'd suggest we stick to simple, and our community (in fact, initially, our directors) select lists that have a decent lead. If we're mainpaging once a week (initially) we can easily find suitable material. The Rambling Man (talk) 17:59, 16 February 2011 (UTC)
Also worth considering we promote something like 10 to 20 lists a month right now, so if we're only on the mainpage four times a month, we've got plenty of scope for cherry-picking! The Rambling Man (talk) 18:01, 16 February 2011 (UTC)
Hah, even better. Good lists! This has been the subject of many discussions, all of which ended in "non" to GLs. I think any FL that doesn't reach our current standards should either be improved or demoted. That's why we have a very active WP:FLRC process. I'd like to hope we already have several hundred FLs ready to go that don't need to be creatively blurbed; we should just be able to use a version of their lead. The Rambling Man (talk) 18:07, 16 February 2011 (UTC)
Timing
Hi Adam, good to see the FS proposal gaining serious support. Times are changing, hopefully for the better. I've asked the FL guys to focus on six or seven of our more-recently promoted lists, to provide a blurb a la FA. We are aiming to complete this within the next two days. Then, I was wondering, how do you feel about us starting our official proposal on Talk:Main page thereafter? Or would you prefer the FS vote to conclude before the FL one starts? The Rambling Man (talk) 13:45, 17 February 2011 (UTC)
- Agreed. Not a problem. Gives us a little more time to polish our attempt. Thanks. The Rambling Man (talk) 18:17, 17 February 2011 (UTC)

Haha, don't worry. I haven't done this in a while, but I have gone through numerous Peer Reviews, GA, FA, and FL nomination processes. I finally found the Respighi piece I was looking for, Pines of Rome. Could you take a listen for me? Its a fine recording, but the CD cut each movement at odd parts and continues them in the next...well you'll need to listen to understand.
Also, I am thinking about scrounging for some non-musical sounds that may be featured sound quality. One that may fit the bill is File:Fireworks.ogg...but it has a lot of background noises. I believe you did the noise removal for File:Ada Jones and Billy Murray - Shine On, Harvest Moon.ogg. FSC thread from ANI
John Vandenburg is going to try to mediate the situation from ANI between Tony and Sven. I am sure he will be contacting you about it, probably offwiki, and he'll take your concerns seriously. The goal of postponing the on-wiki discussion is just to try to make it possible to resolve the situation more gracefully, since there are apparently offwiki concerns with Wikimedia Australia that need to be balanced in the short term. John is going to post a public statement of results in a few days, and if those are insufficient then an onwiki discussion will be needed. I'd like to give him a chance, if it's OK with you. — Carl (CBM · talk) 11:47, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

FS on Main Page – Signpost
Hi Adam, I hope you're well. The Rambling Man (talk · contribs) and I are writing up a special report for the "Features and Admins" column of The Signpost regarding a few Featured List milestones. One of these milestones, of course is that FLs will be on the Main Page. Of course, we would be remiss in not mentioning the addition of Featured Sounds to the MP as well. Since you are a director and one of the major contributors there, I thought you might want to write up a brief blurb about that (and perhaps gloss over the technical details in putting FL/FS on the Main Page). Let me know if you have time for this (it would be in next week's edition, which is usually released on late Monday UTC or Tuesday). Regards, Dabomb87 (talk) 00:33, 23 March 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Adam, the page is ready for you at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2011-03-28/Features and admins. You can add your piece under the heading "Featured lists and Featured sounds to appear on Main Page". Cheers, Dabomb87 (talk) 22:59, 25 March 2011 (UTC)
copyright?
The score was not published until 1932 (Amazon had the same date, so seems like not a mistake). Composer was Italian and died in 1928. Opera is from 1920, supposedly. I asked over at Commons and at WP:CP for advice. Do you know? TCO (talk) 02:56, 24 March 2011 (UTC)
I turned File:U.S. Air Force Band - Front and Center Credits.jpg into text for you
Seeing large images of text makes my skin itch, so I ran File:U.S. Air Force Band - Front and Center Credits.jpg through [4] (took a bit of trimming and tweaking to make it work) and then proofread the results for you. You may want to give it a once-over of your own, if you're concerned that I may have overlooked anything, after which I hope it will be usable in place of the 1.9 megabyte image. Text is nice both for the sake of bandwidth consumption and so that search engines and other programs can better understand what's going on. :) If you've got any other text scans like this sitting around on Wikipedia, feel free to draw my attention to them - this didn't take very long and I'll be able to do additional ones more quickly now that I know what tweaks need to be done to make that site handle them more easily. Copyright status of sound file
Hi Adam, I'm wondering if this performance from the Pandora Records website of Prokofiev's Overture on Hebrew Themes can be uploaded to Commons, the English Wikipedia, or neither of those sites. He composed the work while he was in the U.S. According to IMSLP, it was first published in 1922, and according to WorldCat, it was first published in New York (but WorldCat does not give an exact date of publication). I found a PDF catalogue from the publisher, but I can't read it. Can you help me to definitively determine the place/date of the work's initial publication? If it was published before 1923 in the U.S., the sound file could be uploaded to Commons, since it would be PD in its source country. If it was first published before 1923 in the EU (perhaps France or Germany), it would be public domain in the U.S. and not in its source country, so the file could only be uploaded locally. Graham87 11:33, 26 March 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks. OK, I'll upload it here tomorrow. Why 2024, and not 2023, since Prokofiev died in 1953? Is it seventy *full* years, or was that just a typo? I agree, it's beautiful ... especially the clarinet part. Graham87 15:55, 26 March 2011 (UTC)
Re: Sound file
Yeah, the file underwent a bit too much dynamic range compression, methinks. It's just ... alright; nothing really stands out about it for me, but it's not my style. There are a couple of *very slight* wrong notes here and there, but they don't detract from the performance very much ... they are to be expected, especially if it's a live recording. When you say we have two files are you talking about Pandora?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 02:11, 1 April 2011 (UTC)
- If you are talking about the two copies in the article already, they would not serve my purpose, which is to pursue the WP:PLATINUMW. I have to either find a file to add to WP or edit it sufficiently to have it be percieved as my contribution. However, I have no sound editing skills. Thus, I will have to go out and find file to take to WP:FSC. Maybe I can find a better version than what we have or else, I will have to track down other subject matter.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 04:28, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

- I just figured out that to select a more precise time period, I need to be using the slow motion play and the brackets I am working on improving it. I am about to save over the old version. Need advice on removing more static.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 05:57, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

Apology
No problem. re:Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Economic history of the Arab world. Editing this place is a bit like editing a Kaleidoscope. As for Islamic economics in the world, I would rather see that focused on Islamic economics, a huge, canon-law type topic. And a series of articles like Economic history of Morocco, Economic history of the Arab world, Economic history of the Mughal Empire etc. focused on economic history. All that is needed is time and more editors.I.Casaubon (talk) 15:23, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

It seems that maxing audio seems to be getting sufficient positive responses. The problem with multiple parts is squeezing them all into the proper section of articles. At WP:FA, they sometimes restart noms that get insufficient feedback. Alternatively, we could just let them hang out their for another week or so until all the FS directors get back. Re: Be Ye Men of Valour
The original tag for the file that I had placed in the description was commons:Template:PD-50, because I'd read that copyright had expired in the UK after fifty years or so. I believe that I've also found an alternative at commons:Template:PD-UKGov, which mentions the Crown copyright that you were talking about, but vaguely describes the file as an "artistic work" (though I reserve judgment on whether or not Churchill's speeches can be considered "artistic"). Unfortunately, it labeling the file as such, will also categorize it under Category:UK Government images, which is patently incorrect because the audio file is clearly not an "image". Lastly, this guide to copyright in the United States may give details as to some sound recordings, but remains a bit vague to me as to what the difference(s) between foreign and US copyrights is/are. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 08:39, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
