Hi. When you recently edited Eastlandah David (Wesonga), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Foundation (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. <small>Read the FAQ Join us at the DPL WikiProject.</small> |

Catgories and sub-categories
Hi GoingBatty!
This refers to our discussion on my Talk page last week.
I'm no longer convinced that it make sense to delete a category just because a sub-category is also listed in the article. Take, for example, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. If someone clicks on Category:Performers of Sufi music, that should pull up his name. The fact that a subcategory of this, Category:Pakistani qawwali singers, also appears in his article doesn't change that.
In my view, the usefulness of Category:Performers of Sufi music is diminished if the name of one of the most renowned Sufi singers doesn't appear in it.
Your thoughts, please?
Thanks!--Sarabseth (talk) 11:19, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Sarabseth! The Wikipedia:Categorization guideline states "Each article should be placed in all of the most specific categories to which it logically belongs. This means that if a page belongs to a subcategory of C (or a subcategory of a subcategory of C, and so on) then it is not normally placed directly into C."
- Because Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan contains Category:Pakistani qawwali singers, it is redundant to also put him in the parent categories of Category:Performers of Sufi music, Category:Qawwali, and Category:Sufi music, which is why I removed those categories from the article. However, if you think that Category:Pakistani qawwali singers is a non-diffusing subcategory and the article belongs in both Category:Pakistani qawwali singers and Category:Performers of Sufi music, I will leave this to your discretion. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 02:17, 14 December 2011 (UTC)
- I'm not sure I understand the concept of Wikipedia:Categorization#Non-diffusing subcategories, but Category:Pakistani qawwali singers doesn't seem to qualify.
- I'm just trying to apply common sense here, though. It seems to me that when a reader clicks on Category:Performers of Sufi music, that should pull up a list of the performers who are regarded as the leading exponents of this music. If it doesn't, then the WP guidelines may be hurting rather than helping?
- So, if you don't have objections, I would like to restore Category:Performers of Sufi music (but not Category:Sufi music or Category:Qawwali).
- Hi GoingBatty!
- When I said "if you don't have objections...", I was waiting for a response, either way.
- Thanks! --Sarabseth (talk) 11:40, 16 December 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry I misinterpreted your last post. I see you restored all of the categories on December 13. I know nothing about Sufi music, so I will defer to your expertise in this area. I won't object if you keep Category:Performers of Sufi music, and remove Category:Sufi music and Category:Qawwali. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 18:41, 16 December 2011 (UTC)
- I just made some edits to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan unrelated to categorization for fixing a link to a disambiguation page and fixing references. There's one more link on the page to be disambiguated (or possibly removed). It would also be nice to have one consistent date format in the article, but I didn't know what format you wanted to use. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 18:57, 16 December 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks! --Sarabseth (talk) 11:40, 16 December 2011 (UTC)
Yes, sorry about that; not well-worded by me at all! I had already made that change before it occurred to me to discuss it here. I was trying to reach agreement on what the final resolution should be. Will go ahead and keep Category:Performers of Sufi music, and remove Category:Sufi music and Category:Qawwali. --Sarabseth (talk) 10:52, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
WP:AWB breaking footnote links
Hi. These edits you made the other day:
broke the footnote links to the full references; this:
no longer links to:
I've fixed this by forcing the ref-name with sfnRef:
The same thing happened on Tethys (moon):
I understand that using the day parameter is not ideal, but it's not appropriate to break things while removing it. You might find this script useful for alerting you to this sort of problem:
Tycho Magnetic Anomaly-1 (talk) 23:06, 14 December 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you for alerting me to this issue. I apologize that my edits broke these articles (although it's not an obvious break with a full screen browser). Also, please see my comment about AWB on User talk:Redrose64. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 02:36, 15 December 2011 (UTC)
- You're welcome. It issue was obvious with the script installed, and I'd previewed the page using the date= form and knew it didn't work, which is why I went the discrete-parameter route. I've looked at your comment re AWB and just assumed the change was part of AWB because that's what the edit summary said. I'll post more on talk:Redrose64. Best, Tycho Magnetic Anomaly-1 (talk) 23:07, 15 December 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry my edit summary wasn't clear. While AWB has many fixes it suggests, there is always the opportunity for manual editing before saving the edit. When I use the fixes it suggests, my edit summary contains "general fixes" and/or "typo fixing". When I make my own edits within AWB, I use an edit summary that says "clean up". I'll change my edit summaries to say "manual clean up" instead, which will hopefully provide more clarity. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 23:42, 15 December 2011 (UTC)

Garratt Lane
Please do not change British English (busses) for American English (buses). Both are correct.

Chad Warrix
How the HELL did you not notice that Sodium linked to the metal, and not to say, oh, a band? Typical n00b mistake. Ten Pound Hammer • (What did I screw up now?) 04:46, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, I had only been an editor for about six months when I used Dab solver to fix many of the links on Chad Warrix. Links that go to the wrong article are hard to spot, although I specifically went looking for articles that linked to Billboard instead of Billboard when I made this edit.
- Being civil in your talk page conversations and edit summaries will go a long way to encouraging n00bs to learn from their mistakes and develop into the Senior Editors of the future.
- Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 17:54, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
- You're right, I was a little testy there. My apologies. Ten Pound Hammer • (What did I screw up now?) 17:58, 17 December 2011 (UTC)

Zac Moncrief and Montvale
Does this source for Zac Moncrief support his residence in Montvale, New Jersey? Pascack Hills High School students also come from Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey? I haven't been able to find a source that supports either Montvale or Woodcliff Lake for Moncrief, but I'm not sure that this source settles it either way. Alansohn (talk) 02:32, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
- PHHS students came from Montvale, Woodcliff Lake, and Hillsdale, New Jersey, so you're absolutely right. I just added a different reference that specifically says "Zac grew up in Montvale". Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 02:49, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for the updated sources for both Bash and Moncrief. I'm not sure why I couldn't find those sources myself, but excellent research work on your part. Alansohn (talk) 03:09, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
- Google is a wonderful thing, also it takes a while to weed out those articles that are referencing Wikipedia. I actually copied the Moncrief citation from User:SuperFlash101/PaF crew. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 03:18, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

regex question
Greetings, I hope you don't mind me asking but you seem to be good at Regex and I admit I am stuck on a couple problems and could use some help if you don't mind. My first is relatively easy I think. As an example I would like to take something that looks like:
}}}} and make it look like:
}}
}}
I can do most of this in regex but I can't figure out what qualifier to use to make a line break like that.
My second question is in eliminating duplicate parameters from a template. Using my bot I have been able to convert many of the US related projects that are supported by WPUS into the WPUS banner. One sideffect is that in some cases, for several different reasons, I have ended up with some banners having multiples of the same parameter like this for example:
and I would like to eliminate the redundant parameter.
Would you know how to do that? The only way I can figure this out is requiring me to right a whole bunch of rules to filter them out and I was hoping there might be an easier way. It doesn't need to be perfect but any help would be greatly appreciated. --Kumioko (talk) 04:02, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Kumiko - Don't mind at all! For the first, try replacing
}}}}
with}}\n}}
- For the second, I see there are two duplicated parameters. I copied from Wikipedia:AWB/Typos#Duplicated words and saw that replacing
\{\{WikiProject United States\|(\S+)(\|DC=\S*\|DC-importance\=\S*)\2\}\}
with$1$2
seems to work.- Good luck! GoingBatty (talk) 04:41, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
