Revision as of 17:02, 1 October 2017
Hi, welcome to the twenty-first volume of my talk page.
After all that has happened, maybe we shall continue doing the case-by-case method. We gave our proposals our best shots, but they got shot down. By the way, I didn't want to notify you about the RM particularly because I'm an involved party of the ongoing ArbCom case (actually, I'm not the main subject of the case) and I shall tone down my notifications to the very minimal. Also, I had very patience and hopes that you would be there. Now that this is over, we shall use this article as precedent to how to treat every biography or articles about events related to just one person very carefully. --George Ho (talk) 01:30, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
- Ummm... I'm attempting a wikibreak here. Maybe you can do this without me. I have confidence that you can address the notability issue alone. Nevertheless, best recommended to construct RM procedures more often. Id est case by case. But I don't think WT:AT is a good place there to address concerns. The present title "Chandra Levy" is not considered against the naming policy despite content concerns. WT:DEATH is less populated; so is WT:WPBIO. What about Wikipedia talk:Notability (people), whose main project page WP:BIO1E redirects? That seems appropriate. Also, what about WP:VPP? --George Ho (talk) 03:05, 4 October 2016 (UTC)

DYK for Rico Harris
On 10 October 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Rico Harris, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that after the 6-foot-9-inch (206 cm), 300-pound (140 kg) former Harlem Globetrotter Rico Harris disappeared two years ago today, searchers wondered why they could find no trace of such a large man? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Rico Harris. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Rico Harris), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

My block issue on Commons
Massage of PetarM,
Hi Daniel Case, my account on Commons is blocked by user INeverCry, also - importnant - my all texting is blocked neither i can see emails. And i need to step in contact with other Admin to check this case of "power abuse" which happaned here. Some edits were erased by same Admin, of Ikan Kekek and King of Hearts, which i dont know what were. I would be glad if you could send this to any other admin on Commons (99of9 or (Admins list) ) to solve this issue, also i saw King of Hearts has Admin rights there.
I would also like if you could send all text to user Ikan Kekek and King of Hearts to ask what were their edits which were erased on that page.
(When copying text do from talk page so URLs wont be lost, if you cant do that let me know).
People can write me on my email petarmslo@gmail.com since i cant write on Commons.
regards, PetarM

Re: List of people who disappeared mysteriously removals
Some of those have been uncited for months if not years. After not finding good sources (apart from murder porn-type sites), I gave up and stared removing them. I appreciate you adding some sources back in there, but you could agree that the article is a hot mess. - Jack Sebastian (talk) 22:58, 17 October 2016 (UTC)
- To be fair, you had a point. It was just very late and I had something else in mind to be doing. Sorry. Daniel Case (talk) 00:50, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
- We all get that way. I myself have edited far later than I should have (I was recently blocked for interacting with a particularly stubborn little fellow while I was editing too late and toor tired to have simply laughed at them and filed an RfC). I'm glad we talked, though. - Jack Sebastian (talk) 02:13, 18 October 2016 (UTC)

Saturday October 22, 10am: WikiArte Latin American Edit-a-thon @ MoMA | |
---|---|
Join us for a full Saturday of social Wikipedia editing at the Museum of Modern Art (drop-in any time!), during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to the lives and works of Latin American artists. The WikiArte (Wiki Arte y Cultura Latinoamerica) edit-a-thon is a global campaign to improve Wikipedia's coverage of Latin American arts and culture and to counter geocultural systemic bias on Wikipedia. Featuring an opening Artists' Panel at 10am, with Sol Aramendi, Sharon Lee De La Cruz, and Marisa Morán Jahn, to be moderated by Rocío Aranda-Alvarado, curator at El Museo del Barrio. The Museum of Modern Art and Fundacion Cisneros/Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros are uniting with international allies to focus on the lives and works of Latin American artists, architects and designers. With keystone events scheduled for October 22 in New York City and other cities throughout the month (Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Caracas, & others), the campaign aims to further similar goals to Art+Feminism. All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. Introductory training on the basics of Wikipedia editing will be given throughout the edit-a-thon. Please bring your laptop and power cord; we will have library resources, WiFi, and a list of suggested topics on hand.
Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) 23:29, 19 October 2016 (UTC) |

Asian 10,000 Challenge invite
Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:34, 20 October 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Style dot com logo.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. Could you upload your best one here on enwiki, to replace the current lead image (which is really ugly)? They're allowed under {{FoP-USonly}}: long story short, we follow only US law here, US law applies to foreign works by lex loci protectionis, so every building in the world can be uploaded as if it were in the US. -- King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 00:51, 3 November 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins
Hello,
Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. New deal for page patrollers
Hi Daniel Case,
In order to better control the quality of new pages, keep out the spam, and welcome the genuine newbies, the current system we introduced in 2011 is being updated and improved. The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group New Page Reviewer has been created.
Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most current experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.
Find out more about this exiting new user right now at New Page Reviewers and be sure to read the new tutorial before applying. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 04:28, 13 November 2016 (UTC)
A new user right for New Page Patrollers
Hi Daniel Case.
A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.
It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.
If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Mdann52 (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)
Saturday December 3: Contemporary Chinese Art Edit-a-thon @ Guggenheim
Saturday December 3: Contemporary Chinese Art Edit-a-thon @ Guggenheim | |
---|---|
On Saturday December 3, 2016, in conjunction with a global campaign, the Guggenheim will host its fifth Wikipedia edit-a-thon—or, #guggathon—to enhance Wikipedia's coverage of modern and contemporary artists from Greater China. The event will cap off Wikipedia Asian Month, an online campaign dedicated to augmenting Asian content on Wikipedia throughout November. New and experienced editors are welcome. The event will include a training session for participants who are new to Wikipedia, and Wikipedia specialists will be on hand to provide basic instruction and editing support. Editors are invited to view the exhibition Tales of Our Time following the event. The Guggenheim aims to raise awareness of the artists featured in the Tales of Our Time exhibition supported by The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Chinese Art Initiative, and build on the model of campaigns like the Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at the Guggenheim: Women in Architecture, Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at the Guggenheim: Contemporary Art of the Middle East and North Africa, and Art+Feminism.
Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) 09:45, 23 November 2016 (UTC) |

Disappearance of Joan Risch
Hi, I wouldn't say that the information that I moved was the summary of the whole article, just bits of information in the wrong places. I had to reformat the article, as it was poorly formatted. I have now split up the information and moved it to different parts of the article where it should be under Blood type and Possible later sightings. There is no need to remove material again, as the article was scrambled up and not formatted right to begin with. Also the information that I moved around gives different details then what is already listed.

Incomplete DYK nomination
Daniel: Could you please help me complete the request below? I cannot understand what, where, and therefore how to complete whatever is incomplete in step 3 below. Gratefully - --Aboudaqn (talk) 01:46, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
- Hello! Your submission of Template:Did you know nominations/International Juridical Association at the Did You Know nominations page is not complete; if you would like to continue, please link the nomination to the nominations page as described in step 3 of the nomination procedure. If you do not want to continue with the nomination, tag the nomination page with {{db-g7}}, or ask a DYK admin. Thank you. DYKHousekeepingBot (talk) 01:18, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
Requesting a third opinion
Seems that the "original research" tag is still in Murder of Sherri Rasmussen. Can you go to WP:3O for someone to volunteer? WP:NORN has become a dead-end or something. --George Ho (talk) 22:47, 11 December 2016 (UTC)
- The image stays there. But I'll also request a third opinion on the lead image soon. --George Ho (talk) 23:20, 11 December 2016 (UTC)
Your request on the OR matter was declined. You might relist it if you want. I'm unsure what that person meant when he said "no thorough discussion (one-sided)". --George Ho (talk) 05:05, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
Actually, I found possibly a back-and-forth, thorough discussion at WP:NORN. You can use this to re-request the 3rd opinion. But if that's not it, then I'll remove the tag. George Ho (talk) 06:02, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
I uploaded this image in response to the deletion nomination on the pre-death Garner image. If the image is shocking, at least I provided the link that you posted at FFD. Which time indicator is the least shocking but more understanding to the topic? --George Ho (talk) 00:12, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
The infobox image that I added is discussed. Also, the addition was reverted. Maybe you can help. --George Ho (talk) 12:04, 12 December 2016 (UTC)

A discussion at biographies of living persons noticeboard
Hello, this is to let you know that I have mentioned your edits at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard. MPS1992 (talk) 00:27, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
- And you might want to undo your revert at he Metalwa article, and continue discussion. You've now been reverted by two different editors, using the SeeAlso MOS in the mistaken belief that it trumps BLP. Flip the script: if one editor was reverted by other editors pointing out legitimate problems, what would you advise them? Hint: its what you advised me, Daniel. - Jack Sebastian (talk) 06:21, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
- The general rule is that you don't keep reverting back and forth while you're discussing ... it generally tends to show good faith. I am willing to discuss because I believe that policy, as it currently stands, supports that edit. We had a discussion where you raised the same issue (one I note you have completely left out of your account of the situation on BLPN) at WT:MOSLAYOUT. Consensus did not go with you there. You could have, as you said you would, bade your time and built support for a change in policy. Perhaps one is needed ... I don't know. But I do know you're doing this against the result of a community discussion that touched on this very issue. Even if policy is ultimately changed to reflect your concerns, that still looks bad. Daniel Case (talk) 06:35, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

Hint: its what you advised me, Daniel. - Jack Sebastian (talk) 06:21, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
- Look man, I respect and like you, but you are handling this in the wrong way. You have two editors challenging your interpretation of the See Also MOS guideline, specifically where it applies to BLPa. No one is challenging SEEALSO in its current form; we are saying that the common sense and good judgment means it shouldn't be applied to BLPs.
- That's why I haven't discussed he MOS discussion more, because it isn't on point for this problem. The current form of the guideline suggests common sense and good judgment guide the content within a See Also section. Not to belabor a point, but your intransigence to avoiding potentially damaging comparisons in BLP articles using a See also section isn't demonstrating good judgment, and common sense (and basic decency) doesn't take one family's tragedy and dilute it by a superficial comparison to someone else's tragedy. The mere comparison implies a connection that isn't there, and further punishes the parents of the missing child, which is pretty offensive
- To refresh your memory, the main resistance to my proposed edit to SEEALSO was that:
- a) it was a solution in search of a problem,
- b) that it would create a massive amount of work to fix all of tharticles affected by a necessity of sourcing connections, and
- c) that most editors should be trusted to use their common sense and good judgment to know when to apply the comparisons in See also sections.
- To refresh your memory, the main resistance to my proposed edit to SEEALSO was that:
- . This recent matter illustrates that there is n fact a problem with how See Also is being applied, and that even an editor of your experience can sometimes suffer a lapse in approach to the application of See also section. And, to my mind, that's all this is - a lapse in how negatively such a comparison can be perceived. You say you don't see it, but if even one person does, isn't that one too many people? - Jack Sebastian (talk) 07:14, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
- You had the chance to convince the people who could have most changed the section. They declined to do so. Your insistence that since you saw it as a connection it violated BLP (I added two words to make that less likely) rather reminds of how the Supreme Court had to rule that, in cases where speech acts might lead to disorderly conduct charges, the police officer making the charge could not be the one who claimed to have been annoyed or alarmed by the speech in question. Daniel Case (talk) 07:19, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

You say you don't see it, but if even one person does, isn't that one too many people? - Jack Sebastian (talk) 07:14, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
- It's true, Daniel, that I couldn't convince people of the need for a rewording of SEEALSO. It is also true that I do not know American caselaw any more than I know Latin. You proposed solution was a unilateral half-measure, and didn't address the problem, which - coupled with your own statement about how edits should cease until discussion does - made a revert necessary.
- The very comparison is the damage to the real life people who live the life depicted in these articles. Surely, you must see that. And even if you do not, if two very different editors can see it, then that's two readers too many. Since we both know that there aren't going to be any references that compare these two disappearances, I'd suggest - as someone once suggested to me - to let the matter go. See Also sections are always going to be second-guessed as to content, but there's a huge difference between comparing phasers and blasters in a fictional setting with comparing real-life tragedies whose lives could very easily be impacted by what we write. We need to be aware of internet's effect on people, and as we are often seen as authoritative, we need to be exceptionally careful with BLPs, not just from a legal standpoint, but from a moral one, as well. - Jack Sebastian (talk) 07:45, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
- Did that incident occur because of a Wikipedia article? Daniel Case (talk) 07:46, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
- Is that a loaded question? Of course, it came about because of several Wikipedia articles, not just BLPs, but articles where abuses occur in See also sections. Again, the current discussion is not about the validity of See Also sections en toto, but only for their very specific application on BLP articles. Stop looking for zebras. - Jack Sebastian (talk) 08:29, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
- Did that incident occur because of a Wikipedia article? Daniel Case (talk) 07:46, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

Also, at the WP:3RR noticeboard --Calton | Talk 08:51, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
- You ARE aware that the 3RR is NOT an entitlement, correct, that it's a bright line for sanctioning edit-warriors? Please take more care in actually understanding the policies and alphabet soup you like to cut-and-paste. I mean, as an administrator, you're actually expected to understand the policies you're quoting. It's really not all that difficult. --Calton | Talk 13:54, 19 December 2016 (UTC)
- I'm sorry you feel the way you do about this situation.. Right. I notice that you're not actually sorry for creating the situation. So please spare me the unctuous non-apology apology. --Calton | Talk 13:56, 19 December 2016 (UTC)
- No, I did not take 3RR as an entitlement to revert 3 times within 24 hours and then stop, primarily because I did not revert three times within a 24-hour period. I made two reverts on 14 December, and two more on 18 December... Huh, you make a claim in one sentence ("No, I did not take 3RR as an entitlement to revert") and immediately contradict it with the next. You edit-warred, and you consciously everted four times in a way to avoid 3RR, so yeah, you took 3 reverts as an entitlement.
- I know you may have reasons for questioning the sincerity of my apology... It would be hard to question the sincerity of something that never happened, since there was no actual apology. Of course, you're not required to make an apology, but don't pretend you've done so.
- In that vein, I guess I should also apologize: I'm sorry that you don't understand WP:BRD, WP:EDITWAR, and WP:BURDEN. I'm sorry that you fell back on empty wikilawyering rather than even attempt to explain why the addition you edit-warred to force in belongs. I'm sorry that you feel "I like it" is a substitute for reliable sources for claims -- in this, the (obviously) implied connection between the two unconnected cases. I'm sorry that an admin has trouble with those policies and guidelines an admin is supposed to know. Do you wish to question the sincerity of my apologies? Because I'm certainly being sincere here.
- I do recall that at one time you were a very helpful editor... And I do recall that at one time you showed evidence of knowing what you were doing. Just a note, but trying to be clever in your personal attacks (WERE a helpful editor?) doesn't not make them irrelevant personal attacks.
- Here's a tip: instead of deflection, irrelevancies, point-scoring, condescension, empty rules-lawyering, and treating Wikipedia like a personal battleground, perhaps you should focus on following the standard Wikipedia policies, rules, guidelines, and practices. You know, behave like an admin. --Calton | Talk 02:08, 20 December 2016 (UTC)

Russian translation request
Hello, I saw your name here. I was wondering if you could help me with a little Russian translation. I have written the article Khabarovsk Airlines and used references in Russian only for basic information, as I'm using Google Translate. Translations of this source (scroll down to № 99) and this one claim that the airline is a "state unitary enterprise". Would you mind telling me exactly what these sources say with regards to this? Are they saying that the airline was set up by the Khabarovsk Krai government and is a state-owned airline? Thank you very much for your time. — Sunnya343✈ (háblame • my work) 06:25, 31 December 2016 (UTC)

On 8 January 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Murder of Pamela Werner, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that British and Chinese officials in Beijing cooperated in trying to solve the murder of Pamela Werner, which happened 80 years ago today? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Murder of Pamela Werner. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Murder of Pamela Werner), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Hi! I had occasion to warn 98.100.198.100, and I noticed the banner on their talk page. The link goes to the article about the bird, not to any user. DYK Nomination/Biography
Hey Daniel! Thanks for the message and for starting the talk page. I'd been following the election rather closely and realized there probably wasn't a page for her yet so I wrote a bit while I had some time :P I think it'd be great to make the article a DYK nominee. I'm relatively new to all of this so if you have any thoughts/criticisms/suggestions, please feel free to let me know. I'll continue working on the bio (as you pointed out) and the page as a whole tomorrow. Socrates Burrito (talk) 09:10, 26 February 2017 (UTC)
I had been thinking something similar as I began working this morning. There was almost too much information at hand regarding the election itself that I felt as if I needed to leave some out or else let it overwhelm her personal article. What you suggested sounds great given I've added info to the election section already, left some out that I know I can go back to and still have more to find and include. So ya, I'll do it. Request for help
Please, I need help for a translation (from Russian), not from an article, but from a source.
I was working in the articles Mari native religion and pt:Religião tradicional mari (in Portuguese).
The phrase "There is a significant discrepancy between the pantheons of the Lowlands Mari, who worship roughly 140 gods, and Highlands Mari, who worship about 70 gods" has as source the book Religious Rites of the Cheremis. Because given an entire book as a reference, even more in a language and script that probably most readers don't understand, I was looking for a page and quote (my idea was to put a quote in the original and translated); I suspect that the reference is the first phrase of the last paragraph of the page 5 (note that the page 5 of the book is the 7th page in the website with the book), that seems to be ""Боговъ у луговыхъ черемисъ считается (съ матерями, пїамбарами , виднезями, праздничными и поминальными божествами) приблизительно около 140, у горныхъ 70"".
What I wanted were:
a) confirmation that the letters that are in the phrase are exactly that
b) a translation (to English) of the passage
Some difficulties:
- It is a document in Adobe Flash (than you can't do copy-paste, you have to look letter-to-letter in a copy of an old document and know how to identify the cyrilic letters)
- It is a document of 1887, before the ortographic reform of 1918, than I can't even use a machine translator. The result of the machine translation of that page is "Bogov in lugovyh cheremis considered (Sh mothers pїambarami, vidnezyami, festive and memorial deities) of about 140, at 70 gornyh"; however, if I exclude the "ъ" at the end of the words (I think that was the rule after 1918), and mechanically translated Богов у луговых черемиъ считается (с матерями, пїамбарами , виднезями, праздничными и поминальными божествами) приблизительно около 140, у горных 70, the result is "Gods in the meadow cheremi considered (with mothers pїambarami, vidnezyami, festive and memorial deities) of about 140, the mountain 70" (sounds better).
- I don't know almost nothing about russian languade or cyrilic script (because that, I tried the machine translation).
If you could help me, I appreciate a reply in my page in the portuguese Wikipedia.
Thanks in advice (and hoping that you could understand my not-much-good English)--MiguelMadeira (talk) 16:41, 6 March 2017 (UTC)

French translation
I just completed my translation of Musée Saint-Raymond and wonder if you would proofread it as I see you listed as a French-English translator and seem to be one of the few active editors from that page. My primary concern is the sense of the three quotes, whose text is linked in the notes section. Besides that and a general grammatical review, it could use some more sources and I have added some links on the talk page. Ping me if you have any questions. Thanks in advance. ww2censor (talk) 11:58, 26 March 2017 (UTC)

An update from the Sustainability Initiative
Hi, Daniel Case! Thank you again for supporting the Sustainability Initiative, which aims at reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement. Over the past two years, more than 200 Wikipedians from all over the world have come together to push the Wikimedia movement towards greater sustainability.
What's new?
We are writing you this message because there is great news: The Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has finally passed a resolution stating that the Foundation is committed to seeking ways to reduce the impact of its activities on the environment. Also, we have created a cool logo and found a nice name for the project which you can see on the right :-)
What's next?
Currently, we are working with Wikimedia Foundation staff to make sustainability a key priority for the selection of a new location for Wikimedia servers in Singapore. Also, we have presented the Wikimedia Foundation with a green energy roadmap to have all Wikimedia servers run on renewable energy by 2019.
Please help!
Let's keep this project moving forward – and there are several ways in which you can help:
- Ask other Wikipedians to sign the project page as well – this way we can show the Wikimedia Foundation that this is an issue that the community really cares about.
- Talk to Wikimedians you know about the importance of reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement.
- Improve and translate the project page on Meta.
If you have any questions, you can contact us on on Meta. Again, thank you very much for your support! --Aubrey and Gnom (talk) 22:16, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for responding to my message and current problems that I am having
Hi, I will stick to two current issues at a time. The first being is about sources that I was using. For some reason ycdtotv.com was put on the spam list and I don't know why. I don't think it shouldn't have been and would like to see it removed from there. I need to use sources from that website for some Wikipedia articles that exist as well as one that I am currently making. If I can't be removed for some reason can I ever use it a sources for Wiki pages? The second is other sources that I have used and am currently using. On the Disappearance of Dorothy Forstein page that I created I was using websites that people though were not creditable but I think they are, so could you please check out the pages history and old sources and tell me if you think they are suitable to use. And some editor asked me not to use a YouTube video for an article (the page is wrestler Bambi Hall which I also created) and said is wasn't creditable, yet the video was an add from the wrestling company itself so it was creditable, as YouTube videos sometimes are reliable sources. Please let me know what you think. I will address my next issues in my next message to you. Davidgoodheart (talk) 01:31, 18 April 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for your contributions to a piece of justice, Heffernan v. City of Paterson: "This article is about a recent US Supreme Court decision regarding First Amendment protections of public employees. The first amendment protects the rights of public employees, and the Court has previously held that being fired or demoted for political speech or political association is unconstitutional, but in this case, Heffernan was fired not for what he did but what his employer mistakenly thought he did. The Court had to answer whether public employees are protected when their employer bases their decision on factually incorrect information." --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:28, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi Daniel, I regret agreeing to go ahead with the DYK nom, for various reasons, mostly the difficulty of coming up with 200 characters that clearly explain what happened. I don't know whether I need to be consulted as the article's creator; I can't recall the DYK rules. But for whatever it's worth, my preference is not to nominate it for DYK. Can you help verify translations of articles from russian
Hello Daniel Case,
Would you be able to help evaluate the accuracy of translations of Wikipedia articles from russian to English Wikipedia?
This would involve evaluating a translated article on the English Wikipedia by comparing it to the original russian article, and marking it "Pass" or "Fail" based on whether the translation faithfully represents the original. Here's the reason for this request:
There are a number of articles on English Wikipedia that were created as machine translations from different languages including russian , using the Content Translation tool, sometimes by users with no knowledge of the source language. The config problem that allowed this to happen has since been fixed, but this has left us with a backlog of articles whose accuracy of translation is suspect or unknown, including some articles translated from russian. In many cases, other editors have come forward later to copyedit and fix any English grammar or style issues, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the translation is accurate, as factual errors from the original translation may remain. To put it another way: Good English is not the same as good translation.
If you can help out, that would be great. Here's a sample of the articles that need checking:
- Sergey_Musaelyan✓ Pass Much of the history needs to be put in the past tense, although it is otherwise properly translated. Daniel Case (talk) 17:02, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
- Azov_History,_Archaeology_and_Paleontology_Museum-Reserve✗ Fail A lot in the Russian article that's not in the English. Daniel Case (talk) 17:06, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
- GP-4u✗ Fail Doesn't even seem to have been translated. Daniel Case (talk) 17:09, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
- Stroymontazh✓ Pass Daniel Case (talk) 17:11, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
- Vysoky,_Khanty-Mansi_Autonomous_Okrug✗ Fail The Russian article is a stub; ours doesn't even make that level. Daniel Case (talk) 17:15, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
All you have to do, is compare the English article to the russian article, and assess them "Pass" or "Fail" (the {{Pass}} and {{Fail}} templates may be useful here). (Naturally, if you feel like fixing an inaccurate translation and then assessing it, that's even better, but it isn't required.) Also please note that we are assessing accuracy not completeness, so if the English article is much shorter that is okay, as long as whatever has been translated so far is factually accurate. To see the full list of articles, please go to WP:CXT/PTR.
If you can help, please {{ping}} me here to let me know. You can add your pass/fails above, right next to each link, or you may indicate your results below. Thanks! Elinruby (talk) 07:39, 6 June 2017 (UTC) ✓ Pass ✓ Pass ✗ Fail ✗ Fa

A problem with the Asha Degree article
Hey. You might want to take a look at the article's talk page. A point you inserted on the 26th Feb '16 included references to contents found in her bag that weren't backed up by the sources cited. Just thought I'd give you a heads up that I've taken that claim down until a proper source is found (which I've been told is unlikely, since this Wikipedia page and someone's personal blog are apparently the only places that make the claim about what was in the bag). Thought it was a case of vandalism until I tracked it down to the article's most prolific contributor. Sorry if the Talk entry was harsh!Jesuschristonacamel (talk) 03:49, 12 July 2017 (UTC)

Most of these cases are Seizing Jurisdiction v. A Bunch of Items Meeting a Certain Description, but I found a few in reverse, e.g. Quantity of Books v. Kansas and 62 Cases of Jam v. United States. Can you imagine where these names came from? The books weren't trying to seize Kansas, and the jam wasn't trying to seize the United States; I'm left wondering why they weren't Kansas v. Quantity of Books and United States v. 62 Cases of Jam. Nyttend (talk) 23:43, 28 July 2017 (UTC)
- Hm, okay, thank you. I've seen Person v. Entity (or Citizen v. Elected Official) before, but I figured they were always someone suing the entity or the official, e.g. the Baker v. Carr travesty. Nyttend (talk) 03:32, 29 July 2017 (UTC)

Query on reliability of a source
Hi. Since my question was unanswered twice in Reliable Source noticeboard, I think that it is appropriate to ask an admin. I am working on the Syed Shahabuddin article with the hope of promoting it to the GA status. In this article I have used this Source as a reference. I am wondering whether it is a reliable source for sourcing details about Mr. Shahabuddin's political, diplomatic career and amongst others. The author of the text of the source is a former Indian Foreign Service Officer and appears to be his colleague. Please share your thoughts. Thanks. RRD (talk) 12:19, 5 August 2017 (UTC)

Userspace and user talk space deletion
Hi! I recently had my username switched over which generated User and User Talk space redirect to my new account. However, someone created an account in that space, which is fine, but they still have my redirects. I asked the admin that migrated me to delete them but they aren't an EN sysop. Can you delete these two user pages to eliminate my redirects from their history and prevent anyone from mistaken me for them? It would be particularly useful since the only contribution they made was vandalism. :) --AP500 (talk) 03:20, 17 August 2017 (UTC)
Articles that need sourcing
Hi, I see that you added a article to the List of people who disappeared mysteriously in the 1910 year section, which is what I am trying to do, that is add as many articles that exist, but aren't on the list right now. Also I see that you added a template above the Carlease Simms claiming it needs more sources, I tried to find sources to add to it, but I couldn't find any. I even bought a book called Among The Missing, but even that doesn't have all the info that I need. Aarni Neuvonen, Pavlos Kouroupis, Misha Kokaia and Karla Mayer are other articles that also need to have sourced added, but I can't find any. Someone told me that archive.org & archive-it.org are two good internet archive websites, as well as the wayback machine, but I don't really know how to use them. Would you know how to use these sites to add sources to these articles, so I can add them to the list? Davidgoodheart (talk) 05:46, 24 August 2017 (UTC)

Re Iva Honyestewa DYK
Thank you for the review of Template:Did you know nominations/Iva Honyestewa. I have reworked the citation to remove the 404 problem, but the original article has been taken down by the Arizona State Museum as news from an old event and is no longer available on the web. I hope that the changes I have made are enough to move forward. Thanks again. Skistud (talk) 15:21, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
Thank you! I was able to find the reference on Wayback. https://web.archive.org/web/20150621031248/http://www.statemuseum.arizona.edu:80/events/swiaf_juried_competition/2015/winner_details.php?awdno=21 As for the new comments, please see my response. I have no idea why the reviewer continues to insist that the article did not call the basket a pootsaya...When it clearly does. Also, I messed up the syntax on the citation of the DYK; no idea how to fix it. Skistud (talk) 02:40, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
Is Template:Did you know nominations/Iva Honyestewa acceptable now? Thanks again! Skistud (talk) 13:20, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum theft - See also
Hi Daniel, my issues with the see also are two-pronged: The MOS for see also's seems to suggest it's best to "provide a brief annotation when a link's relevance is not immediately apparent" -the text appears to be much more lengthy than it needs to be. The biggest issue, however, that I have with these see also's (also the one for 1972 Montreal Museum of Fine Arts robbery) is that it appears to violate Wikipedia:No original research, as you are making these correlations between the two robberies without any citations or references. Just wanted to explain my actions so that they don't appear unjustified. Thanks, Garchy (talk) 19:37, 31 August 2017 (UTC)

- Daniel, hi. The leading image in the above DYK target article is either mislabeled (as a Roman soldier, which it plainly isn't), or else is the wrong image. I suspect it's the latter. Thanks, Haploidavey (talk) 12:45, 3 September 2017 (UTC)
- Re: your reply at my talk. Yes, it's relatively recent (1st Century). It's an "archaizing-style" head, but not of a Roman soldier. It might well be intended as representation of an Achaemenid soldier - though I'm only guessing at that. I've left details and links on the target page for the DYK. Cheers! Help!
Thank you very much for reviewing the DYK of the Alpine pika. On the Template_talk:Did_you_know page, if you click the "review or comment link" for the Alpine pika, it tries to create the page, so could it open the actually Template:Did_you_know_nominations/Alpine_pika page? I made a mistake while nominating it and created the template page with Template:Did_you_know_nominations/alpine_pika (notice the small "a"), so I page moved to Template:Did_you_know_nominations/Alpine_pika and requested a CSD for the former. - Please see the comments on my edit to the article. I'm thinking you need to finely review the article for omissions, mistakes, and goofs. I read ref 6
- There was another alleged Smith sighting, this one near Rittenhouse Square. That seems more promising to Jeffrey Smith, Judith's husband, whom Judith accompanied to Philadelphia on a business trip before disappearing.
- Please see the comments on my edit to the article. I'm thinking you need to finely review the article for omissions, mistakes, and goofs. I read ref 6
- Frank Lewis calls Ed Geigert, the local private eye working for Jeffrey Smith, to ask about the Society Hill Hotel sighting. Geigert tells Lewis that a guy named Victor Fiorello contacted Smith on Friday after seeing a woman looking remarkably like the picture of Judith Smith on the front of City Paper.
- "It was about 5:55 a.m.," says Fiorello. "I was on my way to work at Blue Cross when I was coming out of the Wawa at 20th and Locust. What caught my attention was a fairly well-dressed, older white woman who was sitting outside a gourmet grocery store. It caught my attention because it was so early in the morning and you don't normally see that."
- After realizing that he had seen her face before, in the newspaper, Fiorello says he called 911 from work.
- and can't imagine what the corresponding paragraph in the article is trying to say. Please go back and verify that the refs say what the article text says. Shenme (talk) 02:45, 7 September 2017 (UTC)
