Pre-debut and Debut
U-KISS was first formed as a six member boy-group in 2008. Kim Kibum and Kevin Woo were former members of the boy band Xing after they left the group in early 2007. The other five members were all individually selected by NH Media through auditions. U-KISS debuted in Japan on August 15, 2008 at the Power of Atamix 08. In 2009, U-KISS has been considered for a 150 billion KRW worth collaboration-project between two nations, Japan and South Korea. It was revealed that a popular entertainment company, Yoshimoto Group in Japan invested 150 billion KRW to groom U-KISS to be an internationally known group. The reason behind this is their quality as a group with multilingual members: Alexander can converse in seven languages -Spanish, Portuguese, Cantonese, Japanese, Mandarin, Korean and English; Eli is good in English, Korean and Mandarin; the maknae Dongho can articulate in Korean and Mandarin; Kevin in English while Kibum can speak Japanese.

Musical style
The group started their career as jazz and ballader through Not Young (2008) and I Like You (2009). In the hiatus of their career, the group switched into music characterized by alternative rock mixed with Bubblegum pop in Man Man Ha Ni (2008) ,Bingeul Bingeul (2010) and Neverland (2011).[28] The group is also notable ballad singers, releasing half of all their songs as ballad.[32] Their most notable one was 0330 (2011) and Someday (2011).[32] They also released Contemporary R&B music as noted in their songs such as Without You, Miracle, I Don't Understand, The Words that hurt me and Light It Up. They also tried Ethereal Wave types of songs that can be noticed in their unreleased songs Dancing Floor, Every Day and the commercially successful, Shut Up! (2010).[78] Musical characteristics of U-KISS is the presence of a genre that includes a balanced infusion of rock, R&B, and rap, empowered by the sounds of electric guitar, bass, piano and quite of other different percussion instruments.[32]
Dance style
The group is a dominant dance performer in hip hop-style. Majority of their choreography contains hip hop dance moves such as popping, waving, floating, and liquid dancing incorporated and inspired by street dancing styles.[79] Kiseop, Eli and Hoon were trained in martial arts, often performed martial art influenced dance moves into their choreography. Though, being professionally trained in dancing prior debut, U-KISS does not choreograph their own dances.[80] Their dances are often constructed by their choreographer, while the group add styles into it.[81]
