Thomas Whitmarsh Cardozo (1839-1881) was a teacher, journalist, and public official during the Reconstruction Era in the United States. His family was Jewish and African American. He served as Superintendent of Education in Mississippi and is the only African American to have ever held the position.
He taught in Elizabeth City, North Carolina and in South Carolina after the American Civil War.[1]
He wrote accounts of his experiences in Mississippi inclusing descriptions of his fellow Republican politiciams for the New National Era. He was a delegate to the 1873 National Civil Rights Convention in Washington, D.C.[2]
He resigned his office after being accused of malfeasance in office.[2]
