The Astor Theatre is a classic, single-screen film cinema located in the inner Melbourne (Australia) suburb of St Kilda, that has a long an illustrious history.[2] It was opened on April 3, 1936 and reflects the charming Art Deco style of architecture and design typical of the time period.[2] In the years since, the theatre has changed ownership several times, undergone redesign and survived contemporary redevelopment proposals to remain a Melbourne landmark venue. [1] The Astor Theatre is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.
On December 6th December 2007 St Michael's Grammar School purchased the Astor Theatre Building to be renovated and used for future drama productions, while retaining the building's use as a cinema.
