Brighton is a city in Livingston County, the fastest growing county in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,701. Brighton incorporates land that had formerly been parts of Brighton Township, Green Oak Township, and Genoa Township. Although the municipal boundaries do not include any of Hamburg Township, it is considered to be part of the greater Brighton area. The City of Brighton's Wastewater Treatment Plant facility is located in Hamburg Township and services not only the City of Brighton, but also parts of Genoa, Brighton, and Hamburg Township. The City of Brighton has two Water Treatment Plants which services not only the City of Brighton but also portions of Genoa, Hamburg and Brighton Township.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.7 km² (3.7 mi²). 9.3 km² (3.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.22% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 6,701 people, 3,103 households, and 1,746 families residing in the city. The population density was 716.7/km² (1,857.0/mi²). There were 3,241 housing units at an average density of 346.6/km² (898.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.61% White, 0.34% African American, 0.42% Native American, 1.31% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 1.48% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 3,103 households out of which 25.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.3% were married couples living together, 9.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 43.7% were non-families. 37.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.15 and the average family size was 2.87.
In the city the population was spread out with 21.7% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 31.9% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 87.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $47,897, and the median income for a family was $62,222. Males had a median income of $48,554 versus $30,877 for females. The per capita income for the city was $28,393. 5.1% of the population and 3.0% of families were below the poverty line. 5.9% of those under the age of 18 and 5.2% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
