Revision as of 08:43, 25 June 2014
Usage
This template is used to display a football (soccer) player squad in a standard format.
Syntax
Most squads are split into two vertical columns. For these, you can use the Football squad start, Football squad mid and Football squad end templates to help with the layouting, and then use this template repeatedly within them:
Football squad start <!-- For help using the below template, please see Template talk:Football squad player --> ... Football squad mid ... Football squad end
Alternatively, if you just want a single column, you can use football squad blank column to fill in a blank right hand column.
football squad start ... football squad blank column Football squad end
Flag icons
The use of flag icons in this template (and similar formatting) to indicate a player's individual citizenship, rather than sporting nationality as a team member is subject to ongoing controversy as of June 2014.
Parameters
The parameters of football squad start
are:
team
to specific the team name (which may be wikilinked)hidenote=y
to suppress display of the above-table note about flags, e.g. when there are not flags in the table, or several such tables are being used in series and the first already has the note.nohead
to rename or suppress the "No." heading (e.g. to replace it with " "
to blank it out when it isn't used, or to replace it with "Nat." when shirt numbers are not being given but sporting nationality flag icons are being used.poshead
to suppress display of the "Pos." heading with " "
, when this column isn't being used.
The parameters of football squad player
are:
no
: The shirt number of the player, if they have one. If the player's number is not known, or unassigned, then you can use the–
character instead, or simply omit it. If omitted for all entries, use the|nohead=
parameter inFootball squad start
to suppress the "No." heading.nat
: The player's sporting nationality (the country that the player represents in international football), which may have nothing to do with citizenship or birth place. Include the only where relevant and not redundant in the context of the article. Do not include at all in below-international contexts. Use the name of the country, or its 3-letter IOC country code, rather than an adjective (e.g. "Spain" instead of "Spanish"). If shirt numbers (|no=
) are omitted for all entries, but|nat=
is given for one or more of them, use the|nohead=Nat.
parameter inFootball squad start
to change the "No." heading to "Nat."pos
: The position in which the player plays. If omitted for all entries, use the|poshead=
parameter inFootball squad start
to suppress the "Pos." heading. You can use any of the four options below for the position, and they'll be linked automatically:GK
for goalkeeperDF
for defender (including sweeper, centre-, full- and wing-backMF
for midfielderFW
for forward or striker (incl. winger and second striker)- some other value; one example would be using
GK
to replace second and subsequent occurrences of "GK" with a "G" then a zero-width non-breaking space in it then a "K", so that the template does not redundantly link it; another case could be to useAM
if there is some reason to be more specific.
name
: The player's name.ref
: A reference footnote, which appears immediately after the player name. It must be in the form|ref=
. This keeps the reference citation code from being confused with part of the player's name in metadata.other
: This is an optional parameter. You can add any related info to this parameter, like specifying captain, vice-captain, whether the player is on loan, etc. It will show additional info in the parentheses (round brackets) after the player name.
Examples
For example, the following code:
Football squad start football squad mid football squad end
Produces this table:
Note: Flags indicate national team as defined under FIFA eligibility rules. Players may hold more than one non-FIFA nationality.

Shortented template names
In order to make easier the work of writing new squads, some alternative, shorter, names has been designed. So, you may now use Fs start, Fs mid, Fs player, Fs end and Fs blank column as alternative templates, using the same equivalent syntax of the other ones.
Microformat
The HTML markup produced by this template includes an hCard microformat, which makes the person's name parsable by computers, either acting automatically to catalogue articles across Wikipedia or via a browser tool operated by a reader, to (for example) add the subject to an address book. For more information about the use of microformats on Wikipedia, please see the microformat project.
To include a URL, use URL.
Classes
The hCard in this template uses at least some of these HTML classes:
- agent
- family-name
- fn (required)
- given-name
- honorific-prefix
- honorific-suffix
- n
- nickname
- org
- url
- vcard
Please do not rename or remove these classes nor collapse nested elements which use them.
