Tanglewood National Golf Club is a public golf course located in Bainbridge Township, Geauga County, Ohio. The course and clubhouse facilities are currently in a state of disrepair and it is expected that by summer 2011, the course will be demolished and a residential neighborhood will begin development.
Formerly known as Tanglewood Country Club which was a private country club located in Bainbridge Township, Geauga County, Ohio. Tanglewood is often said to be located in Chagrin Falls, Ohio but this is inaccurate; it merely gets its mail through the Chagrin Falls post office, thus having its postal address. Located in the Tanglewood Lake housing development, Tanglewood Country Club's 18-hole golf course is lined with houses and condominiums. Tanglewood went into receivership in 2007, when then owner Dennis Romanini failed to make payments on a promissory note to Huntington Bank.[1]
On June 6, 2009, Tanglewood Country Club was purchased at auction by Marc Strauss for $950,000 - less than half of its appraised value and Tanglewood National Golf Club as of July 1, 2009.[2]
The Golf Course
The 18 hole championship golf course was built by William F. Mitchell, a regarded member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects in 1966 and opened in 1967.[3][4]
The 18-hole course sits on 132.47 acres (0.5361 km2) [5] and features tree-lined fairways, 46 sand bunkers and water features including a creek running throughout.[4]
Course Record: 67 - Jubal Jerik
With a 144 slope rating, Tanglewood is the former number one slope rated course in Northeastern Ohio. Tanglewood has hosted major golf tournaments, among them the PGA Tour's last Cleveland Open, in 1972, the LPGA Babe Zaharias Classic and the Ohio Open.
It is important to note that Tanglewood has not received an updated slope rating since two significant course changes. 1) It is Tanglewood Country Club lore that in the 1990s, Tanglewood, using the inside influence of members who reviewed the course's slope rating, suggested that a "creek" in front of #17 green be "built" to manufacture the course's 144 slope rating, the "highest" in Northern Ohio. Very soon after the rating and due to lack of maintenance, the "creek" dissipated and was reclaimed by the land. 2) In 2007, a bad storm fell the historic tree on #1. The #1 tree was an integral part of the hole's notorious difficulty as it blocked approach shots into the elevated green. It is likely that the loss of the tree will greatly reduce the slope rating. Thus the current slope rating is uncertain.
Fuzzy Zoeller, U.S. Open winner and professional golfer, said that Tanglewood could be a U.S. Open course. "Set the tees on the blues, grow the rough and you've got an open course".[6]
In 1972, Tanglewood Country Club hosted the PGA's Cleveland Open. The Winner: David Graham SCORE: -6 (68, 73, 68, 69 = 278) PRIZE: $30,000.00.[7] Graham won on the second hole of a sudden death playoff with Bruce Devlin.[8]
The planning of an annual Ryder Cup-style golf tournament between Tanglewood Country Club and Sahalee Country Club located in Sammamish, Washington is currently under way. Denver, Colorado has been proposed as the site for the first meeting - talks with Cherry Hills Country Club and Bear Creek Golf Club are currently under way.
