Controversial scientists
The scientists interviewed for this film, by and large, are remarkable for the controversial nature of their theories. That is, what is remarkable about them is not that they are experts, but that they are at the center of controversy. What about the guy crying about being mis-represented? He's one of the experts. - After looking over sources discussing all of the contributors to this movie, I can find only one who is not considered controversial or non-mainstream... and he is the one who takes umbrage at the film's misuse of his statements. For some of the others, I have quotations that are as forceful as labeling them "on the fringes of mainstream science." Fringe researchers aren't usually the type of people you would label "experts" in the lead of an article, at least not in a way that makes it seem like they are experts in what most people consider science. - Well, first of all Antelan, I recommend you restrict your remarks to the editorial content of the article instead of making insulting, rude comments about other editors. Secondly, the site isn't referencing "third parties", it's referencing participants in the movie. It's not really "third parties" at all. I'm sure it can be argued the other way, but it's not nearly as clear cut as you seem to think it is. There are also other considerations to take into account as well, the documentary nature of the film, the obvious linkage to and from the 'expert's' webstites from the bleep website...etc. No, not clear-cut at all. This is not the articles on the "experts" themselves. If it were, we could certainly say that they claim to be experts, if there are self-sources to back that. - There have been a slew of other admins involved on this very talk page an the article over the last few days. You can also take it to Wikipedia:Village Pump if you think it's that important. The term 'experts' is sourced and part of the movie, plus their credentials include Ph.D's and M.D.'s I can't see how that can be disputed successfully. And to be honest, it just looks more and more like an attempt to push a pov into the article. Participants in a thing are not third-parties to that thing. Using "claim" violates WP:WTA and I think anything along those lines is just an attempt to add bias to the article. The description of the movie should be true to the description provided by the makers, participants and the movie itself says; then the view of the critics can be added. Haha. OK, what I will say is that what is well-sourced (not in this article, per its current slant, but in others) is the degree to which these "experts" differ from the mainstream. Listing the participant's credentials

- The edit summary was that "Dr" was an appeal to authority. If that's true, SA will immediately go over to Quackwatch and change "Dr. Thomas R. Eng, the director." Anyway, the edit was done because it was an appeal to authority to have the titles [1]. I see nothing in WP rules saying that this is necessary. It is customary to use such titles. - This doesn't seem like an issue to be decided by consensus for this article alone. In my opinion the credentials certainly shouldn't be added in that manner in articles like this, or Quackwatch, but making the same argument for a biography, where the correct post-name credentials are useful information, seems very pointy. As for pre-name titles (again, outside of biographies), I think the issue isn't so clear: in lists, they seem rather annoying, but in the text itself, for the first mention of the name, they might be acceptable. --Philosophus T 00:43, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

- I agree that it may be best to use it the first time the name appears, then refer to that individual by their last name in other instances. But in a list where the whole name is used, along with a short summary of the history of the person, it seems right to include the pre or post titles, if for nothing besides being complete. Not sure why that would be annoying..seems like listing just the names alone would be annoying. It's possible that there may be room for variations in different types of articles, depending on the nature of the article and the relevance of the title to the subject of the article. But it would be nice to have a consistent standard across the board.

I'm almost sure I read somewhere that this is correct what Philosophus and others are saying. That we use the title the first time (I don't see any difference between whether it comes before or after the name), and then just the name thereafter. If the first mention is on a list, that should include the title. However, come to think of it, a list is probably a special case and should include the title to be complete.
Notice that this issue isn't one of annoyance or writing, but merely that SA doesn't like them to have titles because it makes them sound educated.

Ramtha in lead
I've just deleted what I feel is a problematic phrase in the lead: "that repeat the beliefs of the school about various scientific topics." It may put undue emphasis on Ramtha. (I just did a search on What the Bleep in Google News archives. It turned up 1,900 articles. Then added Ramtha to the search, and it turned up 96 results. So about 5 percent of the articles mention Ramtha.) And it may by misleading by implying that the featured individuals are associated with Ramtha and are parroting Ramtha philosophy, when it's likely that none of them knew about the directors' affiliation. Also, it's not clear which parts of the film repeat the beliefs of the Ramtha school. I'd like to see a source which details this. TimidGuy (talk) 12:35, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

Use of "pseudoscience" in lead
It seems that we're generally agreed on some basic premises:
- That New Age topics can be covered in Wikipedia without framing them as false or counter to mainstream
- That Bleep has a New Age theme
- That Bleep accurately presents some basic information about topics such as quantum mechanics and brain neurophysiology and chemistry
- That the movie misleads viewers in that it doesn't make clear where the science leaves off and the New Age speculation begins
- That the movie could potentially be harmful in suggesting to viewers that they won't need medication if they adopt the right mindset
Given that, I see a number of problems with the use of the word "pseudoscience" in the lead:
- Most readers are unfamiliar with the term, and hence it is meaningless to them. The term's obscurity may be illustrated, for example, by the fact that of the 1,900 articles on "What the Bleep" in Google News archives, only 9 use the word "pseudoscience"
- The term "pseudoscience" may also not be common in academic discussion of problematic hypotheses, theories, and research designs. For example, I don't recall Pennock ever using that term in his excellent book critiquing Intelligent Design
- The term distorts the representation of science in Wikipedia, by pushing science away from being a methodology toward being an ideology. Like the church labeling some ideas as heresies, so are some topics in Wikipedia labeled pseudoscience
- It would be better to simply and clearly explain what the problem is with a particular issue than merely give it a label that doesn't mean anything to a general reader
Therefore, in the lead I suggest the reader would be better served by simply making clear the basic problem in the movie rather than labeling it pseudoscience. Instead of the pseudoscience sentence, we could have something like this:
"The film has been criticized for not being clear which ideas presented are scientific and which are speculative, New Age extrapolations that may mislead viewers." TimidGuy (talk) 21:52, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

- I have some problems with where you think we are generally agreed. New Age topics may not need to be portrayed as false, but they certainly must not be portrayed as true. Bleep's "accurate presentation" only serves as an precursor to a credible presentation of falsehoods ... which is what pseudoscience is all about. All pseudoscience starts out with a true foundation and makes false extrapolations. - I think that your dislike of the word 'pseudoscience' is unjustified. It's an established term, with a specific, applicable meaning. If a reader is unfamiliar, there's a wikilink. If I was reworking your sentence, it would become The film misrepresents New Age extrapolations as science, which may mislead viewers. - I take issue with your basic premises; I for one do not entirely agree.
- New Age topics can be covered without framing them as false, but they should, not to say must, be framed as counter to mainstream if they make claims which are contradicted by scientific knowledge. WTBleep is not merely "speculative," it is downright nonsense in the view of the people who are best qualified to know. Contrary to stereotypes, many scientists have a healthy respect for speculation or extrapolation from known facts to faint possibilities, even fanciful or non-falsifiable possibilities (viz. SETI Project, quantum suicide). But the major portion of WTBleep comprises specific claims which scientists believe to be flatly untrue.
- It's not for us to say that the physicists are right and the Ramthacists are wrong, but it is for us to say, explicitly and prominently, that their views are in sharp contradiction, resulting in outright condemnation from the former of the latter. Again, my basic point is that "pseudoscience" doesn't communicate much in this context to a general reader and that a more precisely worded sentence would better serve our purpose of wanting to alert readers to the problematic nature of the movie. Kww, above you proposed an alternate version to the current sentence in the lead. Are you still open to the idea of an alternate version?

- I think that is convincing, in that "pseudoscience" is an uncommon word. "Say the movie misrepresents quantum mechanical theory" would be specific and tell the reader much more. Thus, "pseudoscience" is jargon here, and should probably be avoided. I was for it because I'm familiar with it, but in the interest of informing the general reader, we should probably be specific about the problem. Not to mention that if, in fact, pseudoscience is a polite word for "balderdash," it definitely not a word Wikipedia should contain in an unattributed sentence, except in the most egregious cases. The ArbCom set that threshold at Time cube, and Bleep does not meet that standard, nor even the standard of astrology [3], as there is no consensus we can site, as there is with astrology, and Bleep is more credible besides. - I don't know what "too passive" means because Wikipedia is supposed to be dispassionate, and not aggressive. But if it means not informative enough, I agree. The sentence is added here because it's a notable criticism. The above doesn't really go into the criticism with enough detail, and I think the issue is that some parts of the film "misrepresent science" rather than "misleads viewers". Maybe a specific example from the sources would help, as in "...speculative, New Age extrapolations that may misrepresent science, for example... [insert example]... among others". I think that will better explain what the issue is.
- I also agree with the others that "pseudoscience" adds nothing. While it is a real term that has a real meaning, the way it is actually used is as a pejorative meaning "nonsense" (if the reader is even familiar with the term). That's how it's used in the real world and that's how it's used at Wikipedia. No reliable source about the science says that it accurately represents scientific fact, and the reliable sources that discuss the science go so far as to use words like "tosh" and "balderdash". If there weren't, then no one would be writing critical articles, such as the one in Physics Today. Straightforward, noncontroversial facts, like the two examples you gave, don't generally receive comment. Eleland, thanks for your input. I think New Age mysticism may be redundant. Also, I'm curious what in the movie was refuted by scientific evidence? Are there sources? Certainly the conjectures can be criticized as being unscientific and a misleading extrapolation of science, but that's not to say that science has refuted them. Note that the main sources we've been using, the Physics Today letter and ACS comment, both focus explicitly on "extrapolation," but you may have a point. - The distinction is that those are unsupported conclusions or speculations drawn by the film makers (pseudoscience), not ideas that have been refuted by scientific evidence (unscientific). I doubt science has either 1) done studies to see if water crystals are affected by human words, or 2) taken any study that has attempted to see if words have effect on water crystals seriously. Refute means to "disprove" a claim. Pseudoscientific claims go unrefuted all the time. While the notion of a 35,000 year old Atlantean god possessing a woman is completely and incontrovertibly not supported by science, it's hard to say it's refuted by scientific evidence as well. - OK, to answer your question with an answer, it's not exactly an unbiased book of facts you're talking about. The article on Heinz Pagels points out that "Pagels was an outspoken critic of those he believed misrepresented the discoveries and ideas of science to promote mysticism and pseudoscience". The keywords there are "he believed". What you consider to be a fact-based refutation is actually an argument from the bias of his belief that people were misrepresenting science. It's not as plain as you make it out to be. "Refuted" means disproven, not argued against. It's also horribly outdated and not widely circulated. The context of the ACS article is also the extrapolation. Facets of quantum mechanics are accurately presented, from what I understand. The concern is that the articles aren't 'nuanced' in the way you claim - read them again. They are very clear that the film is complete nonsense, that the little bits of accurate physics are used only to justify pseudoscience, etc. Now, we may not be able to make statements like that in this article, but we cannot mis-represent the sources to say anything other than what they do. I am not trying to mis-represent the sources. A one-sentence summation of them is 'the film is pseudoscience'. Your two-sentence version is fine for the moment (although I have removed 'crossing the line into' for clarity). Re. the whole film versus pieces of it being pseudoscience: here I request an analysis. The film exists to push a form of quantum mysticism, which is pseudoscience. It may contain an accurate description of some aspects of quantum mechanics, but the accurate parts are there only to give a false appearance of support to the pseudoscience. Similarly, intelligent design as promulgated by Behe contains some accurate descriptions of single-point mutations, but those are only there as part of the pseudoscience. So: if the conclusions, agenda, etc., of a work are pseudoscience, but it contains copies of valid work within it, that are erroneously interpreted and applied, is the entire work pseudoscience or not? "The film is pseudoscience", period, doesn't convey the actual problem critics have with the film. Is it pseudoscience because it takes real science and applies it to spirituality, something not covered by science? Or is it pseudoscience because it passes nonscientific ideas off as scientific? Or is it pseudoscience because the science is wrong? Or is it pseudoscience because the greater scientific community doesn't accept it? Regarding the secondary question posed in the RfC, of how to address the pseudoscience issues in the article about this film, several people mentioned that what is needed are verifiable sources with qualified third parties making those statements.

The way forward: attribution.
The solution is, I think, to focus on attribution. We can say with complete accuracy that James Randi describes it as "a fantasy docudrama" and "[a] rampant example of abuse by charlatans and cults". We can say with complete accuracy that Movie Gazette describes it as "Creepy, distasteful cinematic propaganda, fronted and funded by a bunch of cults". we can do that, with citations. We can also say that various individuals describe it as wonderful and empowering, and we can attribute that. And then the reader can decide whether they would rather believe James Randi, Raj Persaud and a bunch of physicists, or the (IMO) fruit and nut cake of people promoting the film. With that in mind, I have rewritten the disputed paragraph in the lead to say who describes it as such. I think I have included the main thrusts of criticism: pseudoscience, propaganda and cult involvement. If people think that needs more sources to reinforce its relevance, feel free to add them, but I'd say that ACS and James Randi in particular are pretty good sources for this kind of critique. - I guess I don't feel like the lead is the place to start a catalog of quotes. Also, since there are tens of thousands of reviews, I'm not sure that simply adding a variety of quoted opinions is useful to the reader. Isn't a Wikipedia article supposed to summarize the sources? Personally I think we would better serve the needs of the reader by finding sources that specifically identify errors. In my mind that would be more useful to a reader than a list of general, pejorative opinions. - Hey, I'm all for a summary style lead, but my reading of the debate above is that the true believers do not like the fact that this is denounced as pseudoscience and cultish propaganda. If we can say that it is dismissed as such without the need to use direct quotes, perhaps placing the direct quotes further down instead, then I will be happy. What is important is that the lead correctly notes the fact that the science in this film is used entirely to obscure the twaddle that's being presented, with no logical connection between the few valid scientific arguments and the conclusions drawn therefrom. Provided we can say that, quotes are not necessary. As to WP:WEIGHT, that demands that we note the fact that this film is abject nonsense of absolutely no scientific merit whatsoever. Anything else is a gross failure of WP:NPOV. As a piece of entertainment we can certainly note that it has its admirers, but as a supposed "documentary" it falls short in a number of important ways, first among which is the fact that it has only the most tenuous connection with reality, and second is that most of the supposed experts are in fact known kooks. I'll note again that I've been reading about science for 25 years, including Pennock's excellent critique of Intelligent Design, and I don't recall ever encountering the term outside of Wikipedia. I think I'm starting to understand why the science discussion in Wikipedia is so different from what I read: it may be that those that read the skeptic publications, which I don't, have their own special hortatory style and language. The ACS review does in fact refer to the movie as pseudoscientific, so using the term is clearly not original research, it's the presentation of a significant viewpoint that can be cited to a reliable source. And the general consensus of the scientific community that this movie, allegedly about science, is actually a pseudoscientific sham, is so highly significant to understanding this movie that it certainly should appear in the lead. I propose moving the quote farm or a modified form of it, to the 'Reception' section, and replacing it in the lead with something like: The film as been criticized as pseudoscientific, and one prominent scientist appearing in the film accused the filmmakers of selectively editing his interview in order to misrepresent his views. ...with cites to ACS and Salon, which I can't figure out how to put on this talk page. One would think that if it were the most appropriate term to characterize the problems in the movie, which most of these articles discussed, it would be more common (and, therefore, familiar to a general reader). Also, as Nealparr astutely pointed out in the weasel thread above, the term has many different uses. How would the reader know which one applies? - TimidGuy, you may consider it data, but I don't find google hits to be relevant to the discussion of whether a common, generally understood word, that was used in the lead of a prominent review of the movie, is appropriate. Again, with all the respect due, I find the arguments against using this word to be absolutely without merit. I don't call them specious because that would imply that they had a false appearance of validity. Considering the clear consensus on SA's RfC, maybe it's time to close that one, and open one asking: Will a general reader understand the meaning of the word pseudoscientific, when used in the phrase, "The movie has been criticized as pseudoscientific"? Although frankly I find the question to be silly.
- As for this - which are the sources that acknowledge parts of the film to accurately represent quantum mechanical concepts? This excessively verbose sentence seems to be an attempt to lend some credence to the movie that I have not seen reflected in the secondary sources we are citing.

There is little chance for pseudoscience to be misinterpreted in context, since it actually fits the definitions at pseudoscience and is in any case a direct quote; to call it "pseudoscientific docudrama" is very descriptive. Docudrama, not documentary (an entirely fair criticism, many are much more outspoken about it), and pseudoscientific in the sense of pretending to science; as a phrase I believe this is completely unambiguous. Need for reliable sources to cover New Age reception
Sure some folks won't appreciate me pointing this out, but what the hell. It's been mentioned that this film is a pseudoscientific propaganda film for the New Age spiritual movement, and I completely agree with that assessment. But reading through the article, especially the "Reception" section, there is zero information about the impact of the film on the New Age community. Has it been successful in recruiting more New Agers? Do they view it as cannocal film? Is it influential among those groups? What does Deepak Chopra, one of the prominent New Age speakers, think of the film? Over half of the reception section talks about the reception by the scientific community, and reads as a general condemnation, but the film wasn't made for scientists and isn't just about science. It's also about spiritual ideas. Obviously someone out there liked the film; it grossed over $10 million. The reception section doesn't mention anything about how it was received by the New Agers who are presumably the base market for the film. Do they condemn it as well, or do they embrace it? If so, to what degree? This will probably be seen as low on the priorities scale, but I wanted to point it out to editors who might want this to be a GA or FA at some point. --Nealparr (talk to me) 07:40, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

- I gave this a try today. I had previously posted on this page a list of science sources debunking the claims, so I figured I'd give it a go and research supportive comments even though it seems to me that the film's science claims are mostly incorrect. But for NPOV, if there are sources supporting the film's claims, they should be reported too, so I looked for some.
- I was surprised how difficult it was to find any supportive sources other than either people connected to the film's producers/promoters, or people who spoke in the film and are using their appearances to promote themselves. I thought there would be some new age teachers or writers referring to the film positively, but my search was not very successful. I put in around a hour on it, and here's what I came up with.
- I used google, google scholar, and google books, and searched the title of the movie, plus also adding the word "science" or "scientist", and I also searched adding names of some new age teachers like Chopra and Weil. I found several categories of pages: film reviews, websites selling new age stuff, some books that mentioned the film, and some newspaper stories about the film. I eliminated all the stuff that was debunking the film and looked at the rest of it.
- Of the thirty or so movie reviews I found, some were outright negative, some were positive about the film as entertainment, but questioned the science, and only three were generally positive and not questioning the science. Here are the links to those reviews:

This isn't about the science. It's about the audience the film was intended for and whether they embraced it. I'm looking for sources that talk about how the film was received by the New Age spiritual community. A comparative example is that there are many sources that say the Passion of the Christ movie was well received by the Christian community and is considered an important film by them. On the subject of the Native American's "perceptual blindness" to European ships. It is also important to note that the idea was introduced by Candice Pert with her confirming it as a belief that she held as true. I would like to argue for an extension for that particular section explaining that Candice said that the story of the Native American's "perceptual blindness" is actually a story that she believe it to be true and not something she is confirming as fact. Simply by stating it as an unreliable source in the Wiki, I believe, would suggest that the film was treating the idea as fact and not a belief held by an expert. I shall include here Candice Pert's exact words on the matter:
“Well, the way our brain is wired up, we only see what we believe is possible. We match patterns that already exist within ourselves through conditioning. So, a wonderful story, which I believe is true, is that when the Native American Indians on the Carribean islands saw Columbus’ ships approaching, they couldn’t see them at all, because it was so unlike anything they’d ever seen before. - It's the way you write citations that causes the dispute, Dreadstar. There's a big difference between "So-and-So says statement [ref to So-and-So]" and "statement [ref to So-and-So]". The first formulates it as a belief of a source, and the second formulates it as a fact, supported by a source. Since Pert's story isn't true, the second version is far more appropriate. The version you started with is better than the version you created. - Sorry I'm late. Yes, it needs to be attributed to Hambling. The reason is because it is Hambling's synthesis of what he believes is the origin of the story told by Pert. We have no way of knowing if that is the actual origin of the story, or just what Hambling thinks is the origin, and we have no way of knowing if Hambling and Pert are talking about the exact same story. In the Fortean Times article, it mentions that the story is told with variations. Sometimes Cook, sometimes Columbus, sometimes Magellan. It's his synthesis that they're all the same story, and that they're all actually about Cook. I wrote this part and chose the words carefully. It's not about the undisputed fact that the Native Americans likely saw the ships and ignored them. That's not the issue and needs no attribution beyond the source of the Fortean Times. It's not a controversial statement and FT is reliable enough to report it as a general fact. The part that isn't fact, but rather Hambling's opinion, is that Pert bastardized a story about Cook as being about Columbus. There's reliability issues with that. Is Hambling a history expert? - To me, The story is a bit sketchy since it's over 500 years old and the Native Americans involved never had a written language. Okay, they could have passed the tale along through oral traditions, but their people and culture were decimated by disease, slavery, intermarriage, and overall mistreatment shortly after the Spaniards arrived. The Native Americans could have related the story to the Spaniards who, of course, were humanitarians and would have wanted to preserve all things Native American; except, there was a language barrier. Yet, somehow, through it all, the tale survived is denigrating the concept of inheritance from native American sources. I know that there aren't any stories passed down by the indigenous people of my island, because the Spanish kidnapped or killed every one of them, leaving us with a stretch of 50 years where it was uninhabited. Similar things happened all over this area.
- How about Candice Pert notes a story, which she says she believes is true, of Native Americans being unable to see Columbus's ships because they were outside their experience. This story could not have been reliably passed down by Native Americans [cite intuitor.com]. I don't think we need a million different sources to do that, and the Fortean Times article is good enough because it goes into detail and cites historical records. I would question the reliability of intuitor.com because they don't even try very hard and write it off as a nondescript language barrier and distortion through history, without providing any resources to back that up. One of my thoughts on adding material is along the lines of adding context and detail to better represent the views, ideas and concepts as the movie presented them, not only to give a better perspective of what the movie is meant to be all about, but also to help in understanding the criticism of that material (what are the critics criticizing and why). Here's an example:
- "In the physics community, the film has been criticized for invoking quantum physics to promote pseudoscience. A letter published in Physics Today states that "the movie illustrates the uncertainty principle with a bouncing basketball being in several places at once."
- What exactly was the moving showing with that illustration? How and why was Quantum Physics invoked? What New Age or Spiritual connection is it relating to? Is it speculation? From a general standpoint, films mixing documentary with drama are considered docudramas. If there is a concern about sources, this film specifically is called a docudrama by The Guardian, The Journal-Sentinel, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Miami Herald, The London Times, The Arizona Republic, and even Pagina 12 (en espanol), to name a few. - The addition on John Hagelin is highly over simplified and an inaccurate view of the research and "cherry-picked" if you will. I will probably be seen as having a COI on this bit so another editor may want to look at this research.
- Last paragraph on Candice Perth from my view is not particularly accurate . Perth's name is never mentioned in the article, although the movie is in the intro to the Fortean Times article. I personally consider this to be poorly referenced because the conclusions drawn do not reference Perth directly.I would either find some other reference or remove it.This seems particularly inaccurate:

Here is the version I proposed putting into place. Unlike this version of the lead, it abides by WP:LEAD in that it is a concise summary of the notable controversies about the film, it does not not "tease" the reader by hinting at but not explaining important facts that will appear later in the article, and it is be written in a clear, accessible style so as to invite a reading of the full article.

- Actually Kww, I have to disagree. The lead should be a overview of what is coming in the article. The reader should get the whole picture in a few lines. Thats a pretty general format for any kind of writing, encyclopedia included. I thought Dreadstar's change was good because nothing is changed in terms of information or of viewpoint, except that in compliance with leads to articles its a larger view of the article . As well the specific information in the lead in place at this moment is repeated again in the academic response section, and so is redundant. We have to choose here, we can't have the same info twice. - Actually Kww, I have to disagree. The lead should be a overview of what is coming in the article. The reader should get the whole picture in a few lines. Thats a pretty general format for any kind of writing, encyclopedia included. I thought Dreadstar's change was good because nothing is changed in terms of information or of viewpoint, except that in compliance with leads to articles its a larger view of the article . As well the specific information in the lead in place at this moment is repeated again in the academic response section, and so is redundant. We have to choose here, we can't have the same info twice. Attributions are fine, but the quotes are well over the top, and since there are no similar quotes from the other viewpoints - they don't belong in the lead. I paraphrased the quotes in the Academic section but if we can go with a lead style that hasn't got the Albert quote we could put the quote back in the "academic" section(olive (talk) 17:30, 6 January 2008 (UTC))

No! nothing in this article can be treated as factual or truth whether it is or not. Thats not the job of an encyclopedia. The encyclopedia presents the information without judgment, once verifiability and reliability have been established . However true your points are , they are part of a larger picture . Some people liked the film. Some did not. We have to present both views and we have to do it the right away . Anything else is not neutral. That said, there is nothing in this last paragraph that suggests that anything about the "science" in the move is right.We have to write this in appropriate encyclopedic style .... who said this science is badly represented? - YES! Every science critic agrees that the ideas presented in the movie are absurd, and the myriad of sources that are disallowed as OR agree with those critics. The misrepresentation is a fact, not an opinion of critics. We do not have to present spiritualistic views on a scientific issues ... only the scientific view. Topics are discussed in the film. Marlee Matlin acts in the film. Some scientists do, too.
Some groups didn't like the film.

What's wrong with giving credit to ideas?
I've seen this come up regularly, that editors would like to state as fact something someone actually said. For example, Kww expressed that this edit by Dreadstar was bad because it doesn't present it as fact, but rather something critics say. There's nothing ultimately wrong with that edit. What's really missing is a better explanation of who the "critics" are (ACS, Physics Today, etc.), that was Dreadstar's mistake. This is called attribution, and attribution is a good thing. Attribution isn't a way of pigeon-holing ideas. It's a way of giving appropriate weight to ideas. In this case, the ACS and Physics Today are real scientists and therefore carry a great deal of weight. A statement such as "Ramtha liked it" likewise carries its appropriate weight.
But there are other reasons to attribute, specifically at Wikipedia. A great article at Wikimedia, linked from WP:NPOV, titled "Borderline cases"[7] talks about these very issues from a logical standpoint. I wholeheartedly agree with it's viewpoint.
It starts off posing two example statements:
- "Iraq's population was 24 million in 2002."
- "The 2002 CIA World Factbook reported 24 million as an estimate of Iraq's population."
The article points out that statement 1 purports to be a fact, while 2 is a demonstrable fact, unlike 1. Some might consider it pigeon holing (a typical comment: "Other books say it as well, here we're making it look like only the Factbook says it"). Truth is, it's demonstrating the appropriate weight.
Another important point covered in the article is A. N. Whitehead's fallacy of misplaced concreteness, in other words the often difficult to notice switch from "talking about the world" to "talking about talk". You can read more about it there, too much to go into, but here we are talking about talk, not the world. It offers suggestions for this situation:
- attribute claims to specific sources (persons, groups, a given percentage of some population, etc.) and
- provide enough information about these sources that readers can accurately gauge for themselves the trustworthiness of each.
Finally it ends with: Articles should not "talk about the world," but they should help readers discover the truth about the world by providing sufficient (and verifiable) information about precisely who is saying what.

I think too many details on the attribution is not the best way to concisely summarize the critic's views...and it is certainly overkill to present several quotations in this particular circumstance.

- Without coming up with a specific wording, it is my opinion that any "talk about talk" should be clearly attributed so that readers can clearly see who is saying what, and so the idea itself is properly weighted. That's a given.
- The other thing you mentioned, about quotes, I don't think the quotations are necessary. They don't really sum up what the sources are saying overall and are instead like picking a sound byte from the review to present the topic in the worst possible way. The quote from the letter in Physics Today seems to be there there merely so we can get away with saying "nonsense" in the lead. A positive point of view can just as easily be extracted from the letter: "A letter published in Physics Today says the film inadvertedly showed that physicists haven't presented quantum physics in a way that prevents it from being adapted to spirituality". It says that too (the letter spends more time talking about the limitations of physics than the actual movie). Neither are accurate summaries. From the controversial An Inconvenient Truth:

That's a good way to word a summary intro on a controversial film. Why break the mold? Ours would read:
- What the Bleep was generally well received by New Age spirituality groups. Scientists have criticized the film calling it a "pseudoscientific docudrama" that misrepresents science.[5][6] David Albert, a physicist who appears in the film, has accused the filmmakers of selectively editing his interview to misrepresent his views.
That's all that's needed for a summary. Anything else is just insulting the intelligence of the reader who, if interested, will read the rest of the article. This "unanimous" stuff is not just unsourced, it's unnecessary. Are there any Wikipedia articles that say "unanimous" anything?
While looking around, are there any other controversial films out there to borrow summary intro ideas from? I checked Inconvenient Truth (above) and Fahrenheit 9/11. Neither go overboard. - The main differences between An Inconvenient Truth and What the Bleep Do We Know is that the critics of AIT generally reside on the fringes of science, and there are legitimate controversies about how to interpret the data, while the critics of WTBDWK represent mainstream science, and there is no scientific controversy. I think that that is an important distinction to be made, and is the distinction that vague attributions tend to lose. As for unanimous, I'm not in love with it either, but it isn't OR ... it's just counting. No one has yet found a scientifically reliable proponent of the movie. I think that is important. This isn't a case of differing scientific interpretations of facts, or the controversies that always surround finding a new hominid bone. - The Secret (2006 film)'s intro sucks. Surely there's some film that makes pseudoscientific claims, but did well, with a decent intro we can look at, or even a book. I'd like to find something everyone can agree on and move on. Personally I don't have any problem with what's there now except there's no such thing as a universally panned movie, especially not one that makes millions. Someone out there must have liked it and the intro needs to reflect that if it's going to present criticism in the intro too, hence my adaptation of AIT that said "What the Bleep was generally well received by New Age spirituality groups". They provided one of the speakers for the movie (which doesn't invalidate them) but I think they also helped with funding. I'll have to dig around on that one. I would prefer your introduction to read What the Bleep was well received by the Quackwatch-listed Institute of Noetic Sciences..., and, if I can verify funding involvment, eliminated. - It doesn't have to be independent. Even if the lead said the film was well-received by JZ Knight, or the film makers who made it, that's not a reason to eliminate that statement. It's not all criticism. Of course there's reasons to criticize the people who endorse the film, they're endorsing something everyone else doesn't like, and obviously anyone who endorses the film is biased towards the concepts presented. But again, the simple fact is that the film was well received by someone, it made a lot of money. The intro has to say someone liked it. The Quackwatch thing is completely unnecessary. Since one of the speakers on the film is involved with the INS, it is not quite appropriate to list this in the lead. Find an organization that is independent of the movie entirely to provide a positive review. Maybe Deepak Chopra said something positive about it, for example. - Your logic follows that because Candice Pert worked at NIH, NIH is also "involved" in the movie, or that because William Tiller works at Stanford, Stanford is "involved" with the movie. If NIH or Stanford published a good review it'd be promotion?
- Here's another one for you. I had to look up all the people to see if any of them actually is involved with IONS, as you said, to verify what you were saying is true. In the process I started wondering, why is there no mention at all in the lead about the experts interviewed and no mention at all in the article (anywhere) of what their credentials and affiliations are? The article goes out of its way to mention that the film features interviews with JZ Knight, and is made by Ramtha's school, but it says nothing at all about the film interviewing people at IONS, NIH, Stanford, the University of Oregon Institute for Theoretical Physics, and so on. What gives? I think that they are important. An affiliation or appearance doesn't disqualify a mention, but it is important for understanding when you have a review and when you have promotion. - It's my understanding that IONS wasn't involved in the production in any way, received no financial benefit from ticket or DVD sales, or had any other involvement beyond Tiller being both one of the panel experts while at the same time associated with IONS. So I think if they are "promoting" the film it shows that it was "well received" by them rather than it "involved" them. But let's drop all of that because it really doesn't matter if it says Chopra liked it, just that someone liked it, otherwise it appears we are censoring that out in favor of a solely critical treatment and this conflicts with the demonstrable financial success of the movie if not Wikipedia general guidelines. If we cut to the chase, this is what I think the intro really needs to say in the third paragraph:
- The film employs a panel of experts who discuss the fringe theory that quantum mechanics is linked with consciousness. Many of these experts hold academic degrees, but are also affiliated with New Age research organizations including the Institute of Noetic Sciences. Among the New Age spiritual community the film was well received. However, the idea that consciousness plays a role in quantum mechanics is not an accepted theory in mainstream science and the film sparked criticism from mainstream scientists who strongly disagree with it's premise. One of the experts interviewed in the film, David Albert, has accused the filmmakers of selectively editing his interview to make it appear he agrees with the ideas presented in the film.

- Two main comments:
- IONS has been independently described as a New Age organization, and not necessarily as a criticism or pejorative but rather as calling a spade a spade. They don't describe themselves that way because they feel it might discriminate against them, but I haven't seen anything where they strongly argue against it. In short, it's not a controversial description.
- "Not an accepted theory" is an uncontroversial fact. Critics have stated that the theories are pseudoscience, but that is their argument. It's not a fact, it's their analysis. No one called it pseudoscience when Erwin Schrödinger supported the relationship between quantum theory and mysticism so let's just call it what it is, an unaccepted fringe theory. "Fringe theory" in this case replaces "pseudoscience". "These theories are pseudoscience", again, explains nothing where my wording explains everything. We can continue to go back and forth on the intro or we can try and come up with something everybody can agree with that accurately discusses the issues concerned with the film and move on.

- It's more than "not an accepted theory". It's not a "theory" at all in the sense of a scientific theory. See WP:WTA#Theory. We can say something like, "However, the idea that consciousness plays a role in quantum mechanics is not part of quantum theory and has been labeled by mainstream scientists and critics as pseudoscience." I guess I agree with everyone in some part on this.I have put together another version for the lead using aspects of all of the other versions for the kind perusal of the editors involved. Some thoughts:
- I am concerned about using the term New Age it may be OR or POV to use the term without a reference . Definitely we should use it only once if not referenced. Also, the movie has been well received by all kinds of people so using New Age to describe those providing positive response may be inaccurate, and a point of view.
- should we cite Noetic Institute as New Age without a reference .... sure we might all agree it is a so-called New Age institution but there's that word again, and exactly what is New Age and what does it mean....I again have concerns with using the word unless we reference.
- I think we have references for pseudscientific and Kww has fought long and hard to include this . I think its fair and appropriate to use the term with a reference. However its the material that's pseudoscientific not the movie itself so I have pout in the lines I think Dreadstar originally wrote saying that the "conclusions" and so on, drawn are a concern.
- I realized that the most positive response and the best referenced and least Pov point to the film may be indicated by its box office success. A thought

- It looks like you have missed the point entirely with regards to the idea that consciousness plays a role in quantum mechanics. First of all, the sentence you put it in is weird from a logical standpoint. While it is true that the film posits connections, the current wording states as an errant dependent clause the connection without pointing out it is erroneous (which is indeed the mainstream and therefore most weighted view). More than this the caveat that "the idea that consciousness plays a role in quantum mechanics sparked criticism from scientists who disagree with this premise" is weasel-y and basically wrong. Scientists don't disagree with the "premise" (which is primarily spiritual and not scientific), rather they disagree with the conclusion (that the human mind can affect quantum mechanical events). We initially had something like this, but may need a reference for "but is not".... This is a viewpoint unless we add someone who said this.

- Well, now we can see the problems with your wording. The first sentence is clearly an opinion: I, for one, did not see "the ensuing speculations and conclusions the film presents appear to be based on scientific understanding." I thought that maybe the filmmakers thought that they were basing it on scientific understanding, but they were clearly mistaken or misleading the audience. Furthermore, it's not just that "scientists" disagree with the singular idea. There are many points in the film with which scientists disagree and this particular one was not the "spark" that led to the film's panning by the scientific community. - The “film presents” means of course the filmmakers since no film really presents anything. I guess we can use the English language this way. If the filmmakers are wrong, thats not for an editor to say unless very clear specific, references or reference says so. “Plays a role in consciousness” ensues after the opening sentence “that link quantum physics to consciousness”. If you want to change the tone and meaning of the entire paragraph please write a version and place on the talk pages for other editors to look at and discuss. - Keep in mind that the lead section is meant to be a concise summary overview of the article and does not require the same level of detail as may be found in the body of the article. Also, I would think that a sentence that begins with "the film presents", is obviously meant to be a statement showing what the filmmakers and the film say the film presents, not what the critics believe it to present. - I'm not sure what you mean as regards the lead section of an article, but see WP:NPOV, WP:V, and WP:NOR. The lead must concisely summarize its article, creating a " concise overview of the article, establishing context, summarizing the most important points, explaining why the subject is interesting or notable, and briefly describing its notable controversies..." Synthesizing views to come up with a presumably statement of "objective fact" as you have just outlined may violate policy.
