"Although they are less inclined than mammals to participate in such a contest, a fish would be impossible to defeat in a first-to-blinking staring contest as they do not have eyelids." |

A staring contest with an animal??? That's just goofy, people. |

I often start to laugh when having a staring contest. Is this common? — JIP | Talk 06:38, 6 September 2005 (UTC) |

*Laughing is an instinctive way to defuse tension. I think your subconscious is probably saying "I don't want to fight this person". --Last Malthusian 11:29, 2 December 2005 (UTC) |

== Animals and staring contests == |
|||
Most of this section seems to be nonsense. A "staring contest" with an animal is always done as a joke, as animals do not comprehend the purpose of such a "contest". Yes, dogs and cats sometimes stare at people — there is nothing competetive about it. There is some decent material about the differences between how humans and animals perceive stares, and this is the only thing preventing me from blanking the whole section. ~ Booya Bazooka 21:14, 9 July 2006 (UTC) |

Big Train ran a regular staring commentary, eg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWgg20IqibM |

Also, somewhere I found an international/world championship staring competition, with official rules and everything! The rules stipulated a 3' circle with footplaces, and two umpires looking over the shoulders of each competitor. 125.62.64.155 10:58, 12 January 2007 (UTC) |

I've personally been sent links to this page several times now, with the joke being Jimmy Wales left-aligned photograph staring at you next to the word "staring contest". Possibly worth a mention in the references section? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.206.161.251 (talk) 14:20, 22 November 2011 (UTC) |

== Missing Something? == |
|||
I feel this page is missing something, because it fails to address the reasons that mammals do not look each other in the eye for extended lengths of time. This is a fundamental expression of aggression, a challenge to the dominance hierarchy of an established group, in many species. Also, between humans, prolonged eye contact is a preamble to sexual activity. I would not pretend to be qualified to address this topic, but I hope someone who is could add to the depth of this aricle. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hlocnw (talk • contribs) 19:48, 23 October 2012 (UTC) |
