– Clearly not the primary topic. There are at least three uses of the verb "settle" – one scientific, one social, and one legal – that each have more long-term significance on their own than a small town with a population of 2,421. *Oppose, no evidence that any other uses are commonly referred to as "settle", much less are likely to be searched for with that term. All of the alleged three other uses are at appropriate non-disambiguated titles; none would be at Settle even if there were no other uses. On the other hand, this is the only use article on WP that is named Settle. This is a solution seeking a problem. --В²C ☎ 21:40, 3 November 2014 (UTC) |

"the chasm of Hell Pot "
Does anybody know what this is referring to? The problem is that the district attractions go as far afield as Clapham and Malham, so it could be anywhere. My guess is Alum Pot at Selside. If there is no response, I'll remove it, as in its current form it isn't helpful. --Langcliffe (talk) 12:05, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
I was wondering exactly the same thing! Our nearest guess was that it's an error for Hull Pot, up near Horton. Either way, it can't be counted as an attraction of Settle per se, so I would also vote for it to be removed. I'm also unsure of describing Goredale Scar and Clapham cave as Settle attractions, as they're each 5 miles away.Ozwaldowl (talk) 17:35, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
"Other points of interest are Malham Cove and tarn, the Clapham and Weathercote caves, the chasm of Hell Pot and the waterfall of Stainforth Force (pronounced in the local dialect as 'Stainforth Foss'), the ravine of Gordale Scar, the cliffs of Attermire, Giggleswick Scar and Castleberg, which is the largest outcrop of limestone in Britain[2], standing immediately above Settle itself."
I have severely censored the above on the grounds that Malham, Clapham, and Chapel-le-Dale really don't have much to do with Settle, and the reference to the "largest outcrop of limestone in Britain" is actuallyh a reference to the whole of the Askrigg block! --Langcliffe (talk) 12:23, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
Craven Fault
I have removed the reference to the Craven Fault from the Geography section as it was ambiguous, and in either case inaccurate. If it implied that Castleberg is the Craven Fault, then it's a cliff not a fault. It's not even a fault scarp, but a fault-line scarp (there's been a lot of erosion in the last 300 million years). If it implied that the fault is also to the east, then the fault would probably actually outcrop under Settle itself. --Langcliffe (talk) 23:12, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
