Stop Islamization of America, also called the American Freedom Defense Initiative, is an American anti-Islam[1] organization, which public commentators and news organizations have described as "anti-Muslim."[2]. It is led by Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer, and was founded in 2010 at the request of Anders Gravers Pedersen, the leader of Stop Islamisation of Europe, of which it is the American affiliate. It gained attention from its vocal opposition to the construction of Park51, a planned 13-story Sufi Muslim community center to be located two blocks from the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan.[1] Another affiliate is Stop the Islamisation of Norway.
It is labeled as a hate group by the Anti-Defamation League[3] and the Southern Poverty Law Center.[4]
