Revision as of 09:55, 10 September 2013
The term Special Mission Unit (SMU), is sometimes used to describe designated Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) units. They are tasked with "special missions", sometimes referring to unconventional warfare, counter-terrorist activities, direct action, Special reconnaissance, and/or black operations.[1]
Media have used the term when describing five military units, although they are not officially acknowledged by the US government or US military:[2]
- Tier One - JSOC
- 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (1st SFOD-D), or Delta Force[2][3][4][5]
- Intelligence Support Activity (ISA)[citation needed]
- Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU), or SEAL Team Six[3][4][5]
- Central Intelligence Agency - Special Activities Division - Special Operations Group (SAD/SOG)
- 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (160th SOAR), or Night Stalkers[4]
- Special Forces (Green Berets)
- 75th Ranger Regiment (Rangers)
- 24th Special Tactics Squadron (24th STS)[4][6][5]
Special Mission Unit can also be used to refer to other units with similar capabilities from other nations, for example the British SAS[citation needed], Australian SASR[7], and also Canadian JTF2.[citation needed]
