The Silence are a fictional race of mysterious beings in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who, voiced by Marnix Van Den Broeke.
Show runner Steven Moffat created the Silence to compete with other creatures in the past in terms of "scariness" and Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith called the Silence "the scariest monsters in the Show's history".
Physical characteristics
The Silence are depicted as tall humanoids with bulbous heads and grey, mouthless, skeletal-like fleshy faces. Their hands possess large, elongated fingers. They speak in low, guttural voices.
If anyone saw one of them properly, they would instantly forget as soon as they looked away. In addition, they seemed to be able to move from place to place very quickly. The Silence could also use an energy discharge from their hands to kill and obliterate someone, leaving only ashes behind. It appears that they have to draw this energy from an outside force though, as when performing this act the energy from the lights flew into it. When absorbing the energy and discharging it, a sort of hole appears where the mouth should be.
History
The Silence have apparently been present on Earth for hundreds of years, going unnoticed by the human race, as mentioned in the trailer for "Day of the Moon".
In The Vampires of Venice, Rosanna Calvierri said that through some of the cracks in the universe, the Saturnynians saw only silence and the end of all things. She would later go on to mention that her race "ran from the Silence" in fear, through a crack that acted as a portal. Following his defeat of Rosanna, when the Doctor was preparing to leave, a mysterious silence fell over Venice and everyone in a previously busy Venitian market had mysteriously vanished.
The Silence took control of the TARDIS in 102 A.D. during "The Pandorica Opens". They forced it to land outside of Amy Pond's house on June 26th 2010, and it began to explode shortly afterward, trapping Dr. River Song inside of it within a time loop until the Eleventh Doctor saved her. Although the individual Silent behind the attack was never visible, it was heard to be speaking before the TARDIS exploded, saying: "Silence will fall!" After attending Amy Pond and Rory Williams's wedding, the Doctor discusses the TARDIS blowing up and mentions that "the Silence is still out there" before being distracted by a phone call.
One was in a restroom in the White House in 1969 and killed a woman named Joy in front of Amy Pond. It knew Joy's name and also Amy's, possibly implying that it had psychic or telepathical powers.>
