Serratiopeptidase or Serrapeptase as it is commonly known has been prescribed by doctors in Germany and Japan for around 25 years. The natural anti-inflammatory Serrapeptase has had wide clinical use as a viable alternative to salicylates, ibuprofen and the more potent NSAIDs. Unlike these drugs, Serrapeptase is a naturally occurring, physiological agent with no inhibitory effects on prostaglandins and is devoid of gastrointestinal side effects.
Serrapeptase is a proteolytic enzyme isolated from the micro-organism Serratia E15. This enzyme is naturally processed commercially today through fermentation and was discovered in the silkworm intestine. This immunologically active enzyme is completely bound to the alpha 2 macroglobulin in biological fluids. Histological studies reveal powerful anti-inflammatory effects of this naturally occurring enzyme.
When searching PubMed for Serrapeptase, one can find close to 40 clinical studies, most of which are from European or Asian researchers, since Serrapeptase has not hit the mainstream in the U.S. The studies, generally, conclude that Serrapeptase can have tremendous anti inflammatory benefits. While these studies, as all studies, can be criticized to some degree they are no better or worse than studies conducted in the USA, and as they did not have a financial reward for the outcome can possibly be trusted to a greater degree.
The studies show that it is effective as an anti inflammatory and of course as inflammation is a prime factor in most conditions this explains why it can have such a wide ranging benefit.
The claims of so many different and wide ranging conditions while being anecdotal cannot be ignored. Serrapeptase is not patented and so it is unlikely in the current money driven research climate that any more altruistic studies will be conducted.
There have only been three reports of side effects of lung irritations out of the millions of doses prescribed or self medicated world-wide and as these were twenty years ago when smaller doses were taken it cannot be taken as a major risk.
