The Running of the Santas is an annual holiday celebration event in the U.S. city of Philadelphia where hundreds of pub crawlers take to the South Street section of the city dressed as Santa Claus. Begun in 1998, the event began to take a life of its own as three dozen Santa runners grew to several hundred by the mid 2000's. The event draws a significant number of Rutgers University Staff, Alumni and Sea Isle City patrons where some of the founding members once worked.[citation needed]
Background
The first Running of the Santas was held on December 23, 1998. More than 40 Santas arrived at Pitcher's Pub in Manayunk donned in red and white and pub crawled up and down Main Street. 1999 was the first ROS blizzard and in 2002 The Running of the Santas relocated to South Street. By 2003, the Run amassed hundreds and 2005 was a record turnout seen by all major TV networks and heard by Philly's radio stations.
In 2006 The Running of the Santas moved to 3rd and Spring Garden streets because the volume of santas had reached the thousands and the bars on South Street could no longer accommodate the masses.[citation needed] Instead they used Finnegans Wake and McFaddens Pub along with tented parking lots to accommodate the Claus'.
The organizers of the Running of the Santas have also started other local events that include a St. Patricks Day party aptly named The Running of the Micks, a welcome to spring time in Sea Isle City, NJ with Sea Isle Spring Fling, and a mid summer competition between North and South Jersey shores titled Rudolphs Revenge in Dewey Beach, DE.
The 2007 Running of the Santas will be held on December 15th.[1]
As of 2007 Philadelphia was joined by these other cities in sponsoring official Running of the Santas events: Boston MA, Chicago, IL, Denver, CO, Indianapolis, IN, Key West, FL, Louisville, KY, Minneapolis, MN, Nashville, TN, Pittsburgh, PA, San Diego, CA, Washington DC, & Ashburton, New Zealand.[2]
