Revision as of 21:06, 27 July 2010
| |||
States in blue are the early states that will vote first; states in red-orange are the small states that will vote second; states in green, purple, and yellow are the large states that will vote either third, fourth, or fifth, rotating every election cycle.[1] | |||
|
The Republican presidential primaries for the United States presidential election of 2012 will be held in the 2012 calendar year and be used to determine the presidential nominee of the Republican Party.
Calendar
Ohio Plan
In April 2008, the Standing Committee on Rules of the Republican National Committee recommended the adoption of the "Ohio Plan", that would, starting in 2012, divide the primary states into three tiers: early states, small states, and large states. It would allow the early states to retain their status and tradition of being states that vote first. By the end of February 2012, nineteen small states comprising fifty electoral votes would be allowed to vote. In March, the last states, the largest ones, would then have their primaries.[2]
Rules Adopted by 2008 Convention
The Republican National Convention did not approve the Ohio Plan. Instead, the Rules of the Republican Party adopted by the Convention provide that the timing of binding delegate selection contests shall generally be subject to the same rules as the 2008 delegate selection contests.[3] Thus, primaries (including party-run, or "firehouse", primaries) and state conventions must not occur before February 7, 2012. A specific exception is made for the New Hampshire and South Carolina primaries, which may be held on or after January 17.
Caucuses that select delegates to county, district and/or state conventions, but do not bind those delegates to vote a certain way for national convention delegates, may be held prior to February 7. Iowa Republicans plan to hold their precinct caucuses, and the accompanying presidential preference straw poll, in January prior to the New Hampshire primary.
2010 Amendment
A temporary committee, ten of the fifteen members of which are RNC Chairman Michael Steele and nine persons chosen by Steele, has recommended the following rules for the timing of binding delegate selection contests.
- (1) No primary, caucus, or convention to elect, select, allocate, or bind delegates to the national convention shall occur prior to [Tuesday March 6, 2012]. Except New Hampshire, South Carolina, Iowa and Nevada may begin their processes at any time on or after [Wednesday] February 1 [2012].
- (2) Any presidential primary, caucus, convention, or other meeting held for the purpose of selecting delegates to the national convention which occurs prior to [Sunday April 1, 2012], shall provide for the allocation of the delegates selected on a proportional basis.
These recommendations cannot be amended by the RNC and must receive an up-or-down vote, but can be adopted only by a two-thirds vote of the 2010 Republican National Committee Summer Meeting. If less than two-thirds of that meeting of the RNC votes to approve the committee's recommendations, no changes will be made to the rules decided upon by the 2008 Convention.[4]
Convention
The 2012 Republican National Convention is scheduled to take place the week of August 27, 2012[5] in Tampa, Florida,[6] the week prior to when the 2012 Democratic National Convention is scheduled to take place.[7]
Speculated candidates
Currently
No person has announced his or her intention to run for the 2012 Republican Party presidential nomination. For this reason some people listed may appear more likely to run than others, however, as the primaries have not yet begun, it is too early to definitively determine who will run and therefore this list only contains people who are being discussed in conjunction to the primary (some people may have no intention of running at all). The following list contains the names of people are who are being discussed - in two or more reputable sources that are less than six months old - in regard to the 2012 primary. They are listed in order of the date of the most recent media citation.

That's the question raised by the 2012-GOP-watch blog Race 4 2012 in relaying the news that Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) will publish a book.....in July of 2010." [28]
July 7, 2010: Ken Shepherd of NewsBusters wrote: "While the media have apparently given up -- if they ever seriously attempted -- on holding the Obama administration to account for its handling of the Gulf oil spill cleanup, Republican governors in the Gulf are a different story, particularly Louisiana's Bobby Jindal, a potential 2012 presidential hopeful.[29] |
