Rebecca Costa is an American sociobiologist, author of The Watchman's Rattle[1][2] [3][4] , and radio host of The Costa Report[5][6] [7]. Costa is a former CEO and founder of Silicon Valley start-up, Dazai Advertising, Inc. (sold to J. Walter Thompson in 1997)[8], whose clients have included Apple Computer, Applied Materials, Oracle Corporation, 3M, Amdahl, United TeleCom, and General Electric Corporation[9].
Personal Life
Raised by Japanese mother, Kikuchi Yoshiko, in Tokyo, Japan, Costa lived during the Vietnam conflict in Vientiane, Laos, where her father worked in covert CIA operations. She attributes her ability to spot global trends to her cross-cultural education and upbringing.
Costa presently lives along the Big Sur coastline of California. She is the mother of two children, Mathew and Samantha. She is very fond of her daily companion - a yellow Labrador named Tonka.
Education
Costa graduated from The University of California at Santa Barbara with a Bachelor Degree in Social Sciences while minoring in biology. She petitioned the University to offer a degree in Sociobiology based on Dr. Edward O. Wilson’s revolutionary book [14] and Dr. Richard Dawkins treatise [15] but the University repeatedly denied her requests.
Career
Following freelance jobs as a technology writer, Costa accepted her first full-time job at Calma Corporation, a pioneer in computer-aided design (CAD) and division of United Telecom. Costa quickly rose to the position of Director of Marketing based on her keen ability to translate complex engineering data into benefits non-scientists could understand.
Following Calma, Costa joined Omex - the first optical storage company - as Vice President of Marketing. Omex had the dubious reputation of being the oldest start-up in Silicon Valley. With funding remaining for only two years, Costa claims there was no downside to tackling a full turnaround. “I was looking for something I could really sink my teeth into, and after ten years of failing to get off the ground, no one could blame me if I didn’t turn the company around in 24 months.” During Costa’s tenure, Omex was successful at obtaining contracts from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Library of Congress, and large commercial customers, but sales were not robust enough for the company to continue. “We made huge progress in a short period of time but it was clear we needed more capital. The optical storage market was heating up and competitors were breathing down our necks.”
Costa was offered a position with Tera Corporation in Berkeley, California. Tera prided itself as an incubation company overseeing the early stage development of a plethora of technologies ranging from renewable energy to digital film retrieval and scanning devices. “Every executive was a graduate of the Naval Academy at Annapolis and had served in the nuclear submarines. So this wasn’t just a matter of being a rogue techie from Silicon Valley, and a woman, - the cultural divide was enormous. I didn’t understand Naval protocols, language or hierarchy. I was used to just walking into a person’s office when I needed to talk to them . . .” recalls Costa.
After two years at Tera, Costa left to become the founder of one of the most successful marketing firms in Silicon Valley, Dazai Advertising, Inc., which was sold in 1997 to J. Walter Thompson. Costa developed an enviable track record of working with venture capital firms to introduce new technologies. Over time her client roster came to include industry giants such as Hewlett-Packard, Apple Computer, Oracle Corporation, Seibel Systems, 3M, Amdahl, and General Electric Corporation.
Retiring at the zenith of her career, Costa moved to the Big Sur area of California and spent six years researching and writing her first book, The Watchman’s Rattle (2010), a lead title from Vanguard Press/Perseus Books Group[16]. The success of the book led to a syndicated weekly radio program called The Costa Report[17] as well as a weekly television series called Countermeasures[18]. Rebecca Costa is a popular public speaker and commentator around the world.
