Papaveraceae is the botanical name for a family of flowering plants. Such a family has been universally recognized by taxonomists: it is also known as the "buttercup family" or "crowfoot family". Members include anemones, buttercups, lesser celandine, aconite, and clematis.
The APG II system, of 2003 (unchanged from the APG system, of 1998), also recognizes this family and places it in the order Ranunculales, in the clade eudicots. The family consists of fifty to sixty-five genera, totalling some fifteen to twenty-five hundred species, mostly of herbaceous plants, but with some woody climbers (such as Clematis). They can be found worldwide.
