RadiumOne is a marketing company that provides online display, mobile, video, and social advertising services, aiming to target brand customers through programmatic marketing campaigns. It was first launched in 2009 by Gurbaksh Chahal. The company buys advertising space from websites and mobile applications and resells it in targeted packages to advertisers and agencies. It also creates software that automates the process of media buying for digital marketers. Headquartered in San Francisco, RadiumOne has offices across North America, Europe and Asia.
History
The company was launched in 2009 by Gurbaksh Chahal. It was initially known as gWallet - a loyalty and rewards program.[1] RadiumOne is Chahal's third startup.[2][3] As of 2014 the company was listed as the "ninth largest online ad network" by comScore.[4] After CEO Gurbaksh Chahal pleaded guilty to domestic violence battery on April 23, 2014, there were calls for him to step down as CEO.[5][6] He was fired on April 27,[7] and immediately replaced by COO Bill Lonergan on Sunday 27 April, 2014.[8]
RadiumOne utilizes data taken from social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook and subsequently tailors online, video, social and mobile consumer advertising using real-time bidding.[9][10][11][12] It was one of the first companies to use real-time social data in such a manner.[13][14] The advertising startup had initially raised $33.5 million from venture capital funds including Trinity Ventures and Crosslink Capital. In June 2015, it raised $54 million to open new offices internationally and expand its technological platform. Revenue for 2015 totalled approximately $200 million, and the company was valued at $500 million.[15][16]
RadiumOne announced on October 2016 the formation of a new division, Creative Solutions, that will aim to improve the creative quality of programmatically-served ads for consumers and brands. Programmatic advertising is essentially the automated purchase of advertising inventory, meant to result in more accurate ad targetting. The mechanics of how ad exchanges assess and deliver advertisements are meant to be more heavily factored into the ad-creating process.[17] Emma Hazlehurst, head of strategic solutions at RadiumOne, will head the division.[18][19] According to a 2015 study by the Interactive Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers 60% of banner and video ads were bought programmatically during that year, accounting for £1.6 billion.[20][21]
RadiumOne was nominated in 2016 for the IPA Online Media Owner Awards in the following categories: Rising Star 2015 (Isobel Langley), Best Media Owner, Most Improved Media Owner, Best Partner and Most Improved Partner.[22] RadiumOne announced on October 21 2016 a global partnership with Integral Ad Science to measure the quality of global digital media with the aim of improving industry transparency, prompted by a Media Quality Report released by the latter this same year. The report measured RadiumOne’s average in-view rate at 53% for video and 57% for banners.[23]
As of 2016, RadiumOne’s investors are the following: Adams Street Partners, Trinity Ventures, Crosslink Capital, Draper Esprit, Harmony Partners and Industry Ventures.[24] Customers include Condé Nast, professional cycling team Omega Pharma-Quick Step, Hyundai, Del Monte, AT&T, Microsoft and Arby's.[25][26]
Products
RadiumOne Connect is a software as a service product launched by the company in October 2015, intended for app creators and brand marketers to capture in-app user engagement data and use it to identify and target high-value consumers in real time within and outside of apps. The product combines install tracking, user engagement analytics, geo-location, and push notifications. It provides a web-based dashboard that displays data obtained from the latter methods for the user.[27][28]
On October 10th, 2016, RadiumOne introduced Smart Links. It is a system that detects location and device characteristics to route the user to a specified destination. Intelligence gathered by these interactions can fuel a targetted marketing plan.[29] These links are embedded in ads, and depending on serveral variables consumers are directed to different pages accordingly. It uses deep linking to customize every single link.[30]
Po.st is a social sharing platform that allows web users and website publishers to share content via social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and StumbleUpon, among others. Po.st also includes a link shortener built to provide brands with insights on clicking users, therefore segmenting them for paid media targeting. Activate is an end-to-end programmatic platform for advertisers that uses a data management platform and demand-side platform (DSP), as well as real-time bidding, and automatic media buying across digital advertising platforms. The DSP is available on either a self-serve or managed service basis.[34][35]
