Raúl Casañ Martí (born 27 September 1976) is a Spanish retired footballer who played as a central defender, and currently the manager of CD Ibiza Islas Pitiusas.
Playing career
Born in Beniparrell, Valencian Community, Casañ began his career in the Regional Preferente with Picassent, after that he'd go onto play in the Segunda División B, where he represented Huesca,Talavera, Benidorm, Alcoyano,Conquense and Peña Deportiva. In 2012, at the age of 35, Casañ retired after two seasons in the Tercera División whilst in his second spell with Peña Deportiva.[1]
Managerial career
In 2013, Casañ began his management career at last club, Peña Deportiva but with the youth side. During his three years in charge he'd lead the team to the league title and following this success, Casañ became Sports Director for the 2017–18 season.
On 5 June 2018, following Peña Deportiva's relegation to the Tercera División, Casañ became manager of the first team.[2]During his first year in charge, he led Peña Deportiva to an immediate return to the third tier, after beating Tamaraceite 2-1, in the play-off final.[3]
During the curtailed 2019–20 campaign, Casañ led Pena to a fourth-placed finish and the club took part in the delayed play-offs due to COVID-19, in which Pena would beat Marbella in the first round, but then fell to defeat against Castellón at the semi-final stage.
In the 2020–21 season, Casañ guided Pena to the round of 32 of the Copa del Rey after eliminating Sabadell, a round in which they would be defeated 4-1 by Real Valladolid on 16 January 2021.[4] On 26 May 2021, Casañ left Penya after three-years at the helm.[5]
Hours after stepping down at Pena, Casañ was named as manager of Primera División RFEF side Cornellà, for the 2021–22 season.[6] However, on 21 March 2022, after nearly 10 months in charge, Casañ was sacked by Cornellà with 10 games left, following a four game winless streak - which saw the side in the relegation zone.[7]
On 15 June 2022, Casañ remained in the Primera Federación as he was appointed manager of Unionistas for the upcoming campaign.[8] But this experience like his last was short-lived, as on 19 February 2023, Casañ was dimissed by Unionistas, with the side sitting in 16th place after 24 league games played and in a relegation battle.[9]
On 26 May 2023, after more than three months without a club, Casañ was signed by Tercera Federación side Ibiza Islas Pitiusas, for the 2023–24 campaign with the aim of immediate promotion back to the Segunda Federación.[10]
