Quillette[needs IPA] is an online magazine founded by Australian writer Claire Lehmann. The publication has a primary focus on science, technology, news, culture, and politics.
Etymology
Quillette is named after the French word for a strand of wicker planted so that it takes root.[1]
History
Quillette was launched in October 2015 in Sydney, Australia, by Claire Lehmann.[2] She has stated that her motivation in creating Quillette was to inform readers about controversial topics which had neglected coverage in the media.[3] The website drew significant public attention on August 7, 2017, after publishing the responses of four scientists (Lee Jussim, David P. Schmitt, Geoffrey Miller, and Debra W. Soh)[4] to James Damore's controversial memo "Google's Ideological Echo Chamber".[5][6][7] The website was temporarily shut down by a DDoS attack following publication of the piece.[8][9]
In September 2018 Claire Lehmann announced a partnership with the French weekly political and news magazine Le Point who will publish weekly a French translations of a Quillette article.[10]
Reception
Quillette has been praised by a number of well known scholars and public intellectuals.[11] It has been called "superb" by the evolutionary biologist and writer Richard Dawkins,[12] "real journalism" by the psychologist Jordan Peterson,[13] and "one of the most stimulating & original new web magazines" by Steven Pinker of Harvard University.[14]
Ideology
In an interview with Psychology Today, Quillette founder Claire Lehmann said the magazine provides "an alternative to the blank slate view... very common in left-leaning media."[11]
In an article for The Outline, writer Gaby Del Valle classifies Quillette as "libertarian-leaning" and "academia-focused."[15] In an opinion piece for USA Today, columnist Cathy Young describes Quillette as "libertarian-leaning."[16] Articles in Vice and PJ Media describe Quillette as a libertarian publication.[17][18]
Writing for The Guardian, Jason Wilson describes Quillette as "a website obsessed with the alleged war on free speech on campus."[19]

What led me to create Quillette was, um, when I was a graduate student I was involved in a lot of online discussions with academics in psychology and we had such fascinating interesting discussions that were completely unlike anything that you would see in mainstream media and I thought: firstly, there's a business opportunity here if I can bring some of these conversations to a market and, secondly, you know, people need to know that there are—there is scientific evidence on some of these topics and mainstream journalists are neglecting to, um, inform readers about some of these issues or some of this evidence.
