The State of Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian: Mokuʻāina o Hawaiʻi) is the southernmost state, the only tropical state, the only state that was previously an independent monarchy, and the newest state among the 50 states of the United States of America. The state comprises the Hawaiian Islands in the North Pacific Ocean and is the only U.S. state that is not primarily located on the continent of North America.

The United States annexed the Republic of Hawaiʻi and created the Territory of Hawaiʻi on July 7, 1898. On December 7, 1941, the Empire of Japan attacked Pearl Harbor.
