The state of Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian: Mokuʻāina o Hawaiʻi) is the southernmost state, the only tropical state, the only state that was previously an independent monarchy, and the newest state among the 50 states of the United States of America. The state comprises the Hawaiian Islands in the North Pacific Ocean and is the only U.S. state that is not primarily located on the continent of North America.
Kalani Paiʻea Wohi o Kaleikini Kealiʻikui Kamehameha o ʻIolani i Kaiwikapu kaui Ka Liholiho Kūnuiākea (Kamehameha the Great) established the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi in 1795. On January 17, 1893, the Provisional Government of Hawaiʻi was proclaimed. The Republic of Hawaiʻi was established on July 4, 1894. The United States annexed the Republic of Hawaiʻi and created the Territory of Hawaiʻi on July 7, 1898. On December 7, 1941, the Empire of Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Hawaiʻi joined the Union as the 50th state on August 21, 1959.
The following outline is provided as an overview of and topical guide to the U.S. state of Hawaiʻi:
General reference
Ua Mau Ke Ea O Ke Aina I Ka Pono; translates is The Life of the Land is Perpetuated in Righeousnes. This phrase, also the motto of Hawaiʻi boldly states the spirit of the islands and reminds of an ancient history and culture that has evolved into modern day. Hawai'i is the only state within the United States that's motto is in a language other than English, and the Hawai'i language was banned from being written, taught or spoken for over 100 years. Hawai'i is also the only state that was once its own country that was ruled by a monarchy, it was the location of the most gruesome attacks on American soil since the Civil War. It has evolved from the aboriginal ways to become one of the most popular vacation desinations with a large ethnic diversity. The spirit of Aloha is alive and witnessed by all who visit its land. Hawai'i has its very own history, and it's filled with deceit, beauty and diversity. One’s feelings on its history and progression are all in the eye of the beholder, or possible swayed by which account of the history the reader is investigating. There are many sides to a story, and the islands of Hawai'i have many stories to tell.
