Background
The main feud on the RAW brand, heading into the event, is between John Cena and WWE Champion Randy Orton with the two battling over the WWE Championship. Cena won the 2008 Royal Rumble Match and did not want to wait until WrestleMania XXIV, due to Orton putting him out for four months and Cena wanting revenge. Cena and Orton then agreed on a WWE Championship match at No Way Out.
The second main feud on the RAW brand, heading into the event, is for a WWE Championship match at WrestleMania XXIV. RAW General Manager William Regal announced on the January 28 edition of RAW that there will be an Elimination Chamber match, where the winner will receive a WWE Championship match at WrestleMania XXIV.
The third main feud on the RAW brand, heading into the event is between Mr. Kennedy and Ric Flair. On the January 28 episode of RAW, Kennedy would challenge Flair to a "Career Threatening" match at No Way Out, with Flair's career on the line.
The main feud on the SmackDown! brand heading into the event is between Rey Mysterio and World Heavyweight Champion Edge with the two feuding over the World Heavyweight Championship. Mysterio won a Beat the Clock Challenge on the January 4 edition of SmackDown! defeating Edge with 90 seconds to go, securing an opportunity for the World Heavyweight Championship at the Royal Rumble. Edge retained the title after his kayfabe lover, SmackDown! General Manager Vickie Guerrero was (kayfabe) injured after taking the brunt of Mysterio's 619 and Edge hitting a Spear after Mysterio springboarded off the rope. On the February 1 edition of SmackDown!, Theodore Long (acting as general manager because of the "injured" Guerrero) assigned a rematch between the two at No Way Out.
The secondary main feud on the SmackDown! brand heading into the event, is for a World Heavweight Championship match at WrestleMania XXIV. Theodore Long also announced on the February 1 edition of SmackDown! that like RAW, their brand will also have an Elimination Chamber match, where the winner will receive a World Heavyweight Championship match at WrestleMania XXIV. This marks the first time an Elimination Chamber matchup will happen at No Way Out. Additionally, it marks the first time that two Elimination Chamber matchups at the same event.
The main feud on ECW is between CM Punk and ECW Champion Chavo Guerrero. On the January 22 edition of ECW, Chavo Guerrero defeated CM Punk to win the ECW Championship with the help of Edge. Then on the January 29 edition of ECW, while Chavo was celebrating his victory, CM Punk, dressed as a mexican guitarist, hit Chavo with his guitar. The next week on ECW, Punk demanded a rematch against Chavo for the ECW Championship. Chavo accepted the challenge for No Way Out. That very night, ECW General Manager Armando Estrada arranged the first ever Gulf of Mexico match, in which Punk defeated Chavo.
