Nelson Antonio Denis represented East Harlem, otherwise known as El Barrio or Spanish Harlem in the New York State Assembly.
Through his ground-breaking use of the 1975 Home Mortgage Disclosure Act and the 1977 Community Reinvestment Act, he shattered the "Berlin Wall of Bank Lending" to minority communities throughout New York State, and created the national model for CRA advocacy.
Journalism
A graduate of Harvard University and Yale Law School, Denis published feature articles, book reviews and editorials in the Harvard Political Review, Daily News (New York), New York Post, New York Sun, and El Diario La Prensa.
As the lead Editorial Writer for El Diario La Prensa, he published over 300 editorials and won the 1991 Best Editorial Writing Award from the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
Public Life
Denis served as a Democrat in the New York Legislature from 1996 to 2000, and as a New York Democratic District Leader from 1995 to 2001. During that time he stopped 300 evictions, resolved over 4,000 constituent matters, and secured $8 million in additional state funds for his district (the 68th Assembly District).
His advocacy on behalf of senior citizens and against insurance fraud, compelled the return of $2 million to seniors and their families.
Through his Community Re-Investment Act legislation, public hearings, CRA testimony throughout New York State, and advocacy on the Assembly Banking Committee, Denis persuaded banks to double their lending to home owners and small business persons in East Harlem and other distressed areas throughout New York State.
Denis cemented these gains by invoking the 1975 Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA), and conducting an unprecedented census tract by census tract study, of CRA compliance in the 68th Assembly District and other underserved communities.
This aggressive use of CRA and HMDA legislation, combined with computer census tract analysis, is now the model for CRA advocacy throughout the entire United States.
In recognition of this work, Denis was repeatedly endorsed by The New York Times, Daily News (New York), The Village Voice, El Diario La Prensa, and Citizens Union.
He was named the New Yorker of the Week by news channel NY1 (New York One) in August, 1994.
In 2000, Denis was defeated in a Democratic Primary by Adam Clayton Powell IV.
Vote For Me!
Denis wrote and directed the feature film VOTE FOR ME! which premiered at the 2003 Tribeca Film Festival and sold out at film festivals nationwide.
The film received major coverage from The New York Times, Daily News (New York), The Boston Globe, El Diario La Prensa, Hoy, El Nuevo Dia, Fox News Channel, Univision, WNYC, WSKQ-FM, National Public Radio, and many other news outlets.
VOTE FOR ME! was also invited to Harvard University, Brown University, the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, the John F. Kennedy School of Government, and the New York State Assembly.
Works
Denis has written eight feature length screenplays, three plays, and is an award-winning filmmaker.
As a 1984 Fellow at the Walter Kaitz Foundation, he wrote and directed television commercials for the Heritage Cablevision network.
In 1987 he received the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) Fellowship in Film, and in 1988 he won the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) Film Production Award.
In addition to VOTE FOR ME!, his film HOUND DOG is a film festival favorite.
Community Work
Before and after his political years, Denis continued to advocate for, and serve, his community.
Over a period of twelve years the Denis Legal Clinic provided free legal assistance to indigent New Yorkers.
He fought for seniors and working families on Community Board #11, and on the boards of Boriken Neighborhood Health Center and Casabe Housing for the Elderly.
Denis also passed on his writing experience to students at Touro College, A. Phillip Randolph Campus High School, Teachers and Writers Collaborative, the Grosvenor Neighborhood House, and Poets in the Public Service.
