My Gym Partner's a Monkey is an American animated television series produced for Cartoon Network by Cartoon Network Studios. A sneak peak of the animated series created by the husband and wife team of Timothy and Julie McNally Cahill premiered on December 26, 2005 with a "Sneak Peek" episode, and a second followed on February 20, 2006 (President's Day in the USA). The show first aired as a weekly series four days later, and airs (as of May 2006) at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT in the USA. It later aired in the UK Cartoon Network on September 4, 2006, in place of the Codename: Kids Next Door slot at 4:00 PM.
Plot
Adam Lyon used to be a student enrolled at the human school of Chester Arthur Middle School, but since a computer typo misspelled his name as "Lion", he was transferred to Charles Darwin Middle School, a school of anthromorphic animals.
Main characters
Adam Lyon
A naïve twelve-year old human who was transferred from a human school to Charles Darwin Middle School by an accidental misspelling of his last name from "Lyon" to "Lion". He is also lactose intolerant and physically weak. The animals tend to beat Adam up, especially Bull Sharkowski, which aside from his weakness is the reason he does poorly in gym class, which is why Coach Gills always yells at him, usually resulting in conflict. He often gets fed up with the animals there, especially Jake, and misses his old school and more, their obsessive cleanliness. He has a crush on someone in his old school, a girl named Kerry. He has a just-wants-to-live-through-the-day attitude, and this is unfortunate for hanging out with Jake, who is his best friend. He doesn't like to get in trouble but always does. He usually does something to offend Jake, Jake leaves him, Adam tries to get him back, succeeds, and they argue. As shown in "The Times, They Are Exchangin'", he gets used to the dirtiness of the animals (Even swimming in the school's pond muck ridden pool in "Kerry To Dance?") and got fed up with the cleanliness at his old school. Due to Jake's drama, he usually does his whim. He doesn't or rather didn't believe in wishes since he wished for a Captain Clowny (also a type of underwear) action figure and he never got it. In first grade at his birthday party he peed in his pants, which he is embarrassed about. In "Bubble Or Nothing" it is suggested he may be allergic to Jake or bubbles. He usually complains about the ways of his new school, such as the lunches or bully animals, some which are lions. He is a former fan of Amazon Kevin. The most obvious thing about him is that he has more common sense, basic knowledge, and more class than most of the characters in the show.
Jacob "Jake" B. Spidermonkey
Jake, as his last name implies, is a spider monkey, energetic and adventurous who quickly becomes Adam's best buddy and gym partner, hence the series title. Jake's a true friend who will do anything to help Adam out of trouble, even though many times, Jake's the one who got them into trouble in the first place. Jake is a nephew to a 25-year-old bobcat that likes angels and other nice things like dirtnuts, and never told Adam until Law and Odor. Jake has an obsession with the well-being of his butt, a running gag in the series. He does a good imitation of Principal Pixiefrog. He also likes detention because he has his own cable TV show entited Basic Jake which he broadcasts out of the school during the Saturday morning detention period. Jake's secret shame is that he has received "cheek implants," in both his face and behind. As evidenced in "The "A" word" and other episodes, Jake is a very emotional and sensible character, taking to heart some of Adam's comments and actions, leading to some overly dramatic and exaggerated reactions. Adam often gets fed up with him and his drama. Jake is a good tick-picker, and the "cool kids" {who he formerly admired} used him to pick the ticks off them. He takes saying someone goes ape as a compliment and also admires Truffles DuVaul and GRRRRL power. He likes the hall monitors' uniforms, unlike before he tried it on. He often breaks school rules. He has proven to be some of intelligence, as he had an impressive science project in "My Science Project". When he had a mustache he got treated differently. He often says "I know a guy" as an answer to Adam. Jake also has the unusual ability to correctly spell virtually any word, but only when he's swinging from a vine. If he's not distracted by swinging, he can't even spell words like "cat" correctly.
Major Characters
Slips Python
Slips is a green tree python. Easygoing, likeable, and a classic underachiever, Slips is an excessive daydreamer who's also gullible enough to believe anything he hears, making him a constant fountain of misinformation. Despite the fact he has no limbs he wears a t-shirt. He sheds in "The Sheds", unknown to everyone before Principal Pixiefrog explained, even Slips didn't know. He does lousy prank calls. He is usually seen with Windsor.
Windsor Gorilla
In spite of this gorilla's huge body (which contains a huge heart), he serves as the anti-bully at the school, and often gives confusing wisdom to everyone. He is very smart and reads thousands of books. Ironically, he sounds like Butt-Head of Beavis and Butt-head. He is usually seen with Slips. In "Ain't Too Proud To Egg" he claims he started sounding like his father. He is used to gorilla traditions, strange activities to everyone else.
Ingrid Giraffe
The tallest girl in her class, her towering height only adds to her feelings of insecurity as she tries desperately to blend into the background. This shy, sweet giraffe is always eager to help a friend in need. In "Up All Night" she has an implied crush on Adam. This is later confirmed in "Kerry to Dance?". She is often seen with her neck running up then running back on the screen in an exaggerated hunch. Lupe often hushes her when she gives advice.
Lupe Toucan
This female toucan who speaks with a Spanish accent is the resident gossip meister. She has shown a slight crush for Jake in "Up All Night" and falls in love with Orlando Parrot in "Lupe In Love". She can be tempered and is best friend of Ingrid.
Virgil "Bull" Sharkowski
The school's resident bully. Virgil "Bull" Sharkwowski is a bull shark who enjoys beating up smaller kids like Adam, Jake and Henry and stealing their lunches. His intimidating presence, however, is offset by a high-pitched, squeaky voice that sometimes lessens the impact of his verbal threats. Due to the fact Bull still technically needs to breathe water, he wears a water-filled device on his neck over his gills; when he talks, he'll stop as his gills suck up the water with a loud noise. The contrast between his formidable size and strength and his weak voice may be a reference to boxer Mike Tyson. His nickname may also be a mildly obscure reference to the fact that bull sharks are known to the most agressive of all shark species.
Henry Armadillo
As his last name implies, Henry is an armadillo who is the show's "comic relief" character, wearing glasses and acting like a nerd. He helped the school's football team win their first ever game as a decoy ball and he is a news anchor, he is also a very bad singer.
Phineas Porpoise
A porpoise who is a member of The Spiffies class for geniuses and nerds and advisor to the Student Court. He's usually taunting Adam and Jake he always said Adam as Adumb. Oddly enough, he does not look like a porpoise at all, having a dolphin's beak instead of a porpoises stout jaws.
James Ant
A charismatic red ant who appears to have a great deal of knowledge about getting girls. He attempted to help Henry Armadillo get a date for the dance. He is loud and confident, though whether or not his confidence is justified is unclear. He's always getting squashed by somebody's foot or big objects. His coloring, appearance, and voice are closely remeniscent of the ant in the old Ant and the Aardvark cartoons and may be an homage to that same ant.
Used Characters
Inuyasha
Inuyasha likes to have fun with Jake. He had enough of people bodering him.he teached Bull not to punch people with his tenseigah.
Other Lesser Students
- Hazel Peacock: A peacock.
- Wardell Wombat: A wombat.
- Lippy Zebra: A zebra.
- Latanya Hippo: A hippopotamus. Hangs with Joanie and Margaret. Has an ebonics-esque ghetto "sista" accent. Whenever she gets mad or hungry, she adopts a demonic voice over her accent.
- Joanie Ox: An ox. Hangs with Latanya and Margaret. Has a stereotypical valley-girl "Oh-my-gawd" accent.
- Margaret Rhino: A Sumatran rhinoceros. Hangs with Latanya and Joanie. Normal American girl accent.
- Eddie Panther:: A panther.
- Octavius Octopus: An octopus. Unlike a lot of fish-based animals, Octavius goes/walks in a barrel with the skateboard.
- Dickie Sugarjumper: A diminutive rodent who made a successful career as a writer for the school's greatest class clowns. His popularity flared when he went into stand-up comedy himself, but ended once the other students got tired of his repetitive routine. He was seen as a cheerleader in Cheer Pressure.
- Ursula Ox: An ox.
- Duke Sloth: A sloth. One of the laziest and sleepiest of the school, but worse than him is Larry Raccoon.
- Anton Anteater: An anteater.
- Iggy Porcupine: A porcupine.
- Jathan Elephant: An elephant. They show 3 or more, but looking like football jocks, with squinty eyes.
- Nash Pelican: A pelican.
- Wilson Walrus: A walrus.
- Nate, Nathan, and Nathaniel Penguin: The difference for the trio of penguins is Nate wears Green and no glasses, Nathan wears red and pink glasses, and Nathaniel wears an eskimo hat, blue shirt and normal glasses.
- Daniel Tentacles: A squid who wears glasses. He is part of the advanced class.
- Sammy Snail: A snail.
- Molly Panda: A panda.
- Johnny Grizzly: A grizzly bear who may like to eat fish.
- Janet Musk Ox: A musk ox.
- Nestor Parrot: A parrot.
- Lacey Badger: A badger.
- Tom E. Tamarin: A tamarin who dropped out of Charles Darwin Middle School two years ago in the 6th Grade to become a doctor, he is 13. This was all because of his mustache.
- David Coppertrout a coppertrout that grants magic wishes. Jake named him Lil' Puddin Tater before finding out his name and now dislikes him for not giving him a wish. Also, David does not accept Jake's name for him. His name is a spoof of world-renowned street illusionist David Copperfield.
- Chuckie Seal a seal who moved away in Charles Darwin Middle School because he got beaten by Bull Sharkowski.
Faculty
- Principal Poncherello Pixiefrog: Charles Darwin Middle School's principal, as his last name implies, is a pixiefrog. As a strict, but fair administrator, he runs a tight ship, which is somewhat remarkable, considering he could easily be squashed underfoot by most of his students. It seems he has Liticaphobia. He always begs not to be sued by Adam Lyon because he is more concerned about the school budget than the school itself. He is also a little corrupt in a funny way, as he once comes up with the idea taking out Adam when Mr. Mandrill suggests taking Adam out of Gym class, also has a little "flushy flushy" idea for Coach Gills when Mr. Mandrill suggests a vacation. His ideas to prevent a lawsuits usually result in an unrealistic plan. Amazingly, we find in "Two Tons of Fun," that Pixiefrog is an incredible wrestler, easily beating up Mr. Hornbill in a match in a such a manner that Jake describes it as "We just saw a one-ton rhino get beat up by an eight-ounce frog!" He once got fooled by Jake in a prank call using his voice. Also, this proves he can sometimes be very gullible. His voice and appearance may be based on actor Hans Conried.
- Mr. Cyrus Q. Hornbill: Despite the last name, Cyrus is an Indian Rhinoceros teacher who teaches stalking to the others, using Adam as the "victim" and gives treats to the students after a student answers a question correctly. He seems to have a crush on the cafeteria lady, Mrs. Eugenia Tusk.
- Mr. Maurice Mandrill: A mandrill who is the school's spiritual guidance counselor and also serves as the school's band director (who is an expert on playing bongo drum) and advisor to the Student Court. His personality is a stereotypical portrayal of the aged hippy. He used to be a hobo.
- Mr. Blowhole: A killer whale in The Spiffies class for geniuses and nerds (which includes Phineas Porpoise, a pig, an elephant, a parrot and a squid) and teaches students about spelling to win a Spelling Bee.
- Mrs. Warthog: She's Principal Pixiefrog's assistant; she does all of the filing and is, obviously, a warthog. Ironically, she never works at all.
- Mrs. Loon: This female loon is the teacher in charge of the school's creative writing class as well as painting. Her voice and appearance are based on Katharine Hepburn. (This is possibly a reference to the loon-loving Ethel Thayer, a character played by Hepburn in the film On Golden Pond.)
- Mrs. Chameleon: A female chameleon; She is a drama instructor and art teacher. She teaches while sitting on the stick underneath her warming lamp. She's also a bit of a drama queen herself, as she casts and directs all the school plays much like Mrs. Darbas from High School Musical. She is usually seen with horror music playing and is, as her aptitude said, crazy.
- Mrs. Eugenia Tusk: A female elephant who serves as the school's lunch lady. The Charles Darwin Middle School lunch menu includes: dirtnuts, dirt tarts, grass sandwiches, peanut burritos, twigs n' berries, mud squares, bug soups, and wormy joes. Despite being an African animal, she speaks with a Jamaican accent.
- Nurse Gazelle: The school nurse and, as the last name implies, a gazelle who has a brain the size of a soy nut (She mentions they're really tiny and dry).
- Coach Tiffany Gills: A female goldfish; Coach Gills is the school's tiny, gravelly voiced gym teacher who also serves as health teacher who instructs her students from inside her fishbowl. Though she looks rather sweet, she's no pushover. She never hesitates to give Adam a hard time if he doesn't perform as well as his fellow students.
- Coach Horace Ferret: A mute ferret who is Coach Gills' assistant. He never smiles.
- Ms. Bear: A bear who teaches hibernation classes. She is mostly seen in her cave. She made only one appearence.
- Mr. Grouper: A grouper who used to be the shop teacher of teacher's lounge until the district cut his fundings. He's currently retired.
- Hall Monitors: 4 Hall Monitors are a lizard, flounder, turtle and a bear who likes to eat dirtnuts and dirt tarts and there can't book the students.
- Student Court: 5 advisors are 4 Spiffies geniuses and Mr. Mandrill and the judge is Phineas Porpoise of the student court.
- Substitute Principal Wolverine: A wolverine principal that took over for Pixiefrog after the frog had finally successfully sued in one episode. Unlike Pixiefrog, he took a military school view of the school, and was enough to even terrify Bull. His line for when he met with opposition was, "Do I need to bite you on the buttocks?!!!" Wolverine even managed to drive Mrs. Warthog to get Adam and Jake to get Pixiefrog back after actually being forced to actually work. After Pixiefrog took over, Wolverine left Mary Poppins-esque on a flying umbrella, seeking a school that is more complient.
Other Humans
- Kerry: An Indonesian American female, she's one of Adam's friends from his old school before he was accidentally transferred. She has a crush on Adam. She dressed as a giraffe in "Kerry to Dance?" to go to the Charles Darwin Middle School shindig, even though there were no rules against it since Jake made it up.
- Chad: He was a bully from Adam's old school. He appeared in the episode "Me Adam, You Jake" and was making fun of Adam from when he wet himself in first grade.
Trivia
- The series regularly makes use of the same score used so famously in Curb Your Enthusiasm.
- The name of the school is named after the famous naturalist Charles Darwin.
- Adam's Name is a reference to Adam from Adam and Eve considering both Adams lived surrounded by animals.
- In the episode Inoculation Day,which originally aired December 26, 2005, Adam becomes a monkey and takes Principal Pixiefrog as he climbs Ingrid Giraffe's neck in a spoof of the climax in King Kong.
- In Animal Testing, Adam becomes smart enough to earn his place with the Spiffies, the smartest animals in school. The Spiffies, which include a pig, a dolphin, a killer whale, and more, are all animals that are believed to be quite sentient.
- This is one of two Cartoon Network shows about animorphic animals/mammals. The other is Camp Lazlo. Both feature a Spider monkey as a major character---indeed, as the title character of the show.
- The episode "Bad News Bear" takes its name from the movie The Bad News Bears.
- Law and Odor is a spoof of the Law & Order series.
- The title It's the Scary Old Custodian, Adam Lyon plays off the Peanuts animated specials that almost always ended with Charlie Brown's name, like It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.
- She's Koala That is a pun on the movie "She's All That".
- Guano in 60 Seconds is a pun on the title of the movie "Gone in 60 Seconds", first made in 1974 and remade in 2000.
- Jake mentions a wormy joe in the episode Chew on This, as a reference to a sloppy joe.
- Me Adam, You Jake is a reference from the Tarzan movies, although the character is known as "Jungle Guy".
- "Dirtnuts" and "Dirt Tarts" in the episode titled Law and Odor are references to to doughnut and Pop Tarts.
- In I've Got a New Aptitude, there is a running gag involving lion attacks whenever the word "lion" is spoken. At the end of the episode, during the credits, the lion explains that these attacks were nothing more than hilarious jokes, and no animals were harmed in the making of the episode. The lion was then attacked by a human.
- The Poop Scoop; is a classic retelling of the Christopher Marlowe play, The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus.
- In the beginning of Shiny Thing, Jake's voice is similar to Gollum from Lord of the Rings.
- In the episode Up All Night music from SpongeBob SquarePants can be heard during the sleepover. Coincidentially, Jake Spidermonkey has the same voice as SpongeBob, and Coach Gills has the same voice as the Flying Dutchman.
- In I've Got a New Aptitude,we saw Adam on the dollar, it said on the bottom is One Thousand Clams it should be dollars.
- In Le Switcheroo, Adam and Coach Gills switch places for the day, a spoof of the movie and book Freaky Friday.
- It is thought that the character of Maurice Mandrill is a reference to Rafiki from The Lion King. Since they are both Mandrills and both provide the same kind of service (spirtual guidance) each in a way that represents their different times.
- In The Two Jakes, Jake clones himself and Adam. When the clones trap Jake and Adam, Adam notices that the clones are older. Adam states that he read that clones age faster. This might be a reference to Star Wars.
- In "Ain't Too Proud to Egg" Jake comments that he saw the activity on taking care of an egg on a TV show, except it was a flour sack. This is referenced to the Danny Phantom episode "Life Lessons" when Valerie and Danny take care of a flour sack
