Mubarak Muyika (born May 31, 1994, Kakamega, Kenya) is a Silicon Valley-based[1], Kenyan-born computer programmer and internet entrepreneur. Orphaned at the age of 10, at age 16 Muyika founded Hype Century, a Web hosting. company which he sold two years later for six figures.[2] He is the founder and CEO of Zagace, a company which runs an app store for businesses to access software for accounting, human resource management, marketing, and similar.[3][4]
Forbes first[5] listed him as one of Forbes Africa's 30 under 30 in 2015, at the age of 20.[6]
Early life and education
Mubarak Muyika was born and raised in Western Province, Kenya and has one brother. His father was a district commissioner of Siaya (then a senior civil service appointment)[7] who died in 1996 when Mubarak was 2,[8][9] and mother a high school teacher who died in 2004 when he was 10.[10] Muyika was raised by his mother's sister and her husband in the suburbs of Nairobi.
At 16, while a student at Friends School Kamusinga, Muyika developed a database to manage the flow of petrol and movement of oil tankers as a Science fair project. He called the project enhanced petro tracker.[11] Muyika went on to become the best student in the 49th edition of Kenya students Congress on Science and technology in the computer exhibit category[12]
He graduated from Friend's School Kamusinga in 2011.[13]
Career
His adoptive parents operated a small book publishing and distribution company, Acrodile Publishers. Using online resources, Muyika taught himself how to build a better Website for the company.
In 2011, Muyika founded Hype Century Technologies & Investments Limited, a company focused on website creation and webhosting. In 2012, for his work with Hype Century, he received Anzisha Prize,[14] an award from the African Leadership Academy for young entrepreneurs.
Muyika sold Hypecentury to Wemps Telecom in a six figure deal.[15] Hypecentury has since rebranded and is a fully owned subsidiary of Wemps Telecoms Kenya.[citation needed]
Muyika founded Zagace with proceeds from the sale of Hypecentury, with additional funding from investors. The company offers cloud computing apps for accounting, stock management, marketing, and similar.[15]
