Mrs. Bennet (née Gardiner) is a fictional character created by Jane Austen in the novel Pride and Prejudice. The mother of the protagonist, Elizabeth Bennet, her main concern and motivation throughout the novel is ensuring the marriage of her five daughters to suitable husbands, and she makes many mistakes and displays much social impropriety in her attempts to set the girls up with eligible men. |
==Character== |
Mrs. Bennet is characterised in the novel as something of a querulous, highly-strung and silly woman, who is constantly complaining about the effects of any pressure on her 'nerves', and as such is a figure of amusement to both her daughter Elizabeth and her husband. Unlike her husband, who choses to distance himself from his family, Mrs. Bennet is all too aware of the unfortunate circumstances that await her daughters should they not be married - as their property is entailed to a male heir, they will be impoverished and homeless upon Mr. Bennet's death. As a result, she makes numerous efforts to set her daughters up with eligible bachelors in order to secure their future. Unfortunately, whilst she demonstrates the foresight and pragmatic awareness of what is necessary to secure her daughters' future livelihood, she also possesses an ill-bred nature and a tendency towards social faux pas, which often ruin her own efforts; the men whom she attempts to set her daughters up with in the novel (including Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy) are often put-off by her overbearing and transparent desire for the unions to take place. Her single-minded pursuit of future husbands for her daughters can also blind her in several ways to their welfare and best interests in the present; in an attempt to set her daughter Jane with Mr. Bingley, she orders Jane to ride a horse to his estate through a rain storm, regardless of the potential risks to her health. Her youngest daughters, Lydia and Kitty, resemble their mother greatly in temperament, and Mrs. Bennet is particularly indulging towards Lydia. |
Mrs Bennet can be very two-faced in her opinions of people. For example, Mrs Bennet adores Mr Wickham, when she first meets him. She continues to support this opinion, until Wickham elopes with Lydia, at which time Mrs Bennet's "spirits are greatly shaken," and she speaks of the "villainous conduct of Wickham." By the end of Pride and Prejudice, Mrs Bennet has again been won over. She agrees with Lydia that Wickham is "a charming man." |
