Mitch Horowitz is an American writer and publisher. Horowitz is the editor-in-chief of Tarcher/Penguin in New York City. The Penguin Group's Jeremy P. Tarcher imprint is one of the premier Mind/Body/Spirit publishers.
Horowitz is the author of Occult America: The Secret History of How Mysticism Shaped Our Nation (Bantam, forthcoming September 2009).
A frequent writer and speaker on metaphysical themes in print and on television, radio and the web, Horowitz has appeared on The History Channel, The Montel Williams Show, Coast to Coast AM, and American Radio Journal.
Horowitz' writing has appeared in Parabola (magazine), Esopus (magazine), Fortean Times, Science of Mind (where he has written profiles[1] on Bono, John Wooden, Barry Zito, Gail Devers, Yolanda King and Christopher Reeve, and with the Religion News Service.
Horowitz is on the faculty of the United States' largest urban holistic learning center, the New York City Open Center[2], for its annual Esoteric Quest [3]. He has presented lectures at the Open Center entitled “The Psychic Highway: New York’s ‘Burned-Over District’ and the Growth of Alternative Spirituality in America”[4] and “Made in America: The Hidden History of ‘Positive Thinking’"[5].
At Tarcher/Penguin, Horowitz has published titles in world religion, esoterica, and the metaphysical[6], as well as notable works in philosophy, social thought and politics, including the bestsellers Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and Creativity by Academy Award-nominated director David Lynch[7] and 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl by Daniel Pinchbeck and Weapons of Mass Deception: The Uses of Propaganda in Bush’s War on Iraq by Sheldon Rampton and John Stauber. Horowitz has designed and published new editions of the works of esoteric scholar Manly P. Hall[8], including the Reader's Edition of The Secret Teachings of All Ages. For almost ten years, he has published the works of philosopher Jacob Needleman, including The American Soul: Rediscovering the Wisdom of the Founders and the forthcoming What is God?[9]
