Maria de Fátima Montemor is a Portuguese researcher known for her work in coatings for surface protection and functionality, and materials for electrodes for electrochemical energy storage devices.
Education and career
Montemor graduated from the Instituto Superior Técnico (Technical University of Lisbon) in 1989. She went on to complete her PhD in Chemical Engineering in 1995.[1]
In 2003 she started her research career at the Department of Chemical Engineering as an assistant researcher. In 2011, Montemor became an assistant professor and reached the position of Associate Professor in 2015. In 2017 she got her "Agregação" title in Chemical Engineering and started her teaching activity as a full professor in 2018.[2]
Presently she is co-chairwoman of the TGA3, a task that began in 2020, and a member of the formerly TGS5 experts' group from 2004 to 2020; both are committees created by the Research Fund for Coal and Steel-Cordis-European Commission. She has been serving as an expert in the European Commission, as well, since 2005.
From 2015-2016, she took the position of President of the European Federation of Corrosion, and from 2016-2017, the position of President of the Board of Directors of KIC Innoenergy Iberia.[3] She represented IST on the Board of Directors and presently she is a member of the Advisory Board of this entity. She is also a founding member of the company C2C-Newcap, a spin-off company of IST from 2014 that currently produces asymmetric supercapacitors. She has been participating in the scientific Advisory Boards of different institutions, for example, in the Colab VG energy storage,[4] the Hydrogen Colab[5] and the Technology Innovation Institute in Abu Dhabi.[6]
Research
Montemore is known for her work in the field of surface functionalization strategies and development of coatings, including smart self-healing coatings for improved performance of metallic parts (steels, Mg, Zn and Al alloys).
She has an internationalized research team that deals with topics around coatings and materials for electrochemical energy storage, mainly for high power rates and high energy density supercapacitors.
She has translated scientific achievements into publicly accessible language. Some examples are: Portugal develops new redox supercapacitors,[7] What is corrosion and how to prevent it?,[8] Energy, GDP and corrosion,[9] among others.[10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17]
Awards and honours
She was awarded the BES innovation prize in 2013,[18] and the European Corrosion Medal 2019, which was given by the EFC President at the opening session of EUROCORR 2019 in Seville, Spain[19] for her achievements in coatings for corrosion protection and corrosion science. In 2021, she received the degree of Doctor "Honoris Causa" from the University of Mons[20] for the work developed in the domain of coatings for surface protection and functionalization.
Her H-index is above 60, which merited her recognition as a top scientist in the Materials Science field.[21][22]
