M. Fátima Montemor was born in the countryside, near [[Marinhais]], a small village in [[Portugal]], where she completed her earlier education. She grew in a farm and since young, she always became intrigued by all the mysteries around science and nature. She completed her pre-university education at RARET, a beautiful school in the middle of the woods where students were challenged to learn about science and engineering. |

She graduated in the specialization field of Processes and Industry in 1989. She decided to apply for a fellowship position to experience research in early 1990. After a short time, she became a PhD student and she completed her PhD in Chemical Engineering, with distinction, in 1995 also from the Technical University of Lisbon. Later, in 2003 she started her research career at the [https://fenix.tecnico.ulisboa.pt/departamentos/deq/o-deq Department of Chemical Engineering] (DEQ) as an Assistant researcher <ref name=":0" />. Her research objectives are focused on the area of new surface functionalization strategies and the development of novel coatings, including smart self-healing coatings, for improved performance of metallic parts (steels, Mg, Zn and Al alloys) used in various sectors such as transportation (automotive and aeronautics), construction (building and offshore), biomedical (bioresorbable implants) and energy production (petrochemistry) and storage (fuel cells, hydrogen storage, batteries and supercapacitors).
