Malcolm Hooper is a former British biochemist and emeritus professor of medicinal chemistry at the University of Sunderland.[1] He is best known for his activism related to Gulf War syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, and autism.
Gulf War Syndrome advisor
Malcolm Hooper is a medical advisor to British Gulf veterans who has alleged that deformed children were born to British Gulf veterans[2][3] and that soldiers were harmed by exposure to depleted uranium.[1][2] He feels the British Ministry of Defence does not take the alleged Gulf War syndrome seriously.[4]
Chronic fatigue syndrome activist
In 2002, The Guardian reported on what it called a "vendetta" by Hooper and other activists against chronic fatigue syndrome expert Simon Wessely over the physiological, social, and psychological components of the illness.[5] Hooper insists that there is no psychological component to CFS, which he feels should be called "myalgic encephalomyelitis." As a CFS activist, he is the medical adviser for The Grace Charity for M.E. [6] and published an academic review on the subject.[3]
Other interests
Hooper served on the General Synod of the Church of England between 1970 and 1980 and he continues to be a Christian lay preacher.[citation needed]
