Makeleta Stephan (born 23 May 1978 as Makeleta Piukala) is the first Tongan cross-country skier at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships.
The studied theologian is born in Haʻateiho, Tongatapu, Tonga, but lives since 14 years in Germany. Actually near Pfullendorf, a small town north of Lake Constance in Baden-Württemberg. She is part of the latest casting programme for winter sports athletes from Tonga.[1]
Stephan follows a year after luge slider Bruno Banani gave the debut for Tonga at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi or Gervacio Madja two years ago in Fiemme Valley, also Germany-based and competing for Togo. Tonga set up the Royal Tonga Ski Federation last year with the aim of sending teams to the 2016 Winter Youth Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, and 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Tonga's first representative to compete at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2015 in Falun, Sweden, ended by a completed cross-country sprint qualifying in last place.[2]
