Ghattamaneni Mahesh Babu (Telugu: ఘట్టమనేని మహేష్ బాబు; born August 9, 1974 in Madras, India) is an Indian film actor.[1] He is the son of the former Telugu actor, super star Ghattamaneni Siva Rama Krishna. He has worked in a number of critically and commercially successful films and has established himself as one of the leading actors in contemporary Telugu cinema.
He started his film career as a child actor in his father's film Needa. He made his debut as a lead actor in 1999 with the commercially successful Rajakumarudu (1999). After Rajakumarudu he came with a successful movie Yuvaraju (2000) and then went on to make blockbusters such as Murari (2001), Okkadu (2003), Athadu (2005) and Pokiri (2006). In addition to movie acting, Mahesh is the brand ambassador of Thumbs Up, Navratna Hair Oil, UniverCell, Amrutanjan and Provogue in Andhra Pradesh.[2][3][4]
Early life
Mahesh Babu was born on 9 August 1974 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, to actor Ghattamaneni Siva Rama Krishna and Smt. Indira Devi. He has four siblings: Ramesh Babu, Padmavathi, Manjula Ghattamaneni and a younger sister Priyadarshini. He did his schooling at St Bede’s School in Chennai(schoolmate of Kaarthi upcoming Tamil actor) and obtained an Honours Degree in Commerce from Loyola College, Chennai. Mahesh Babu acted in seven of his father's films as a child actor. His first child acting role was in the film Needa/Naada.
Personal life
He dated his co-star in the movie Vamsi, Bollywood actress and former Miss India (Miss Universe India) Namrata Shirodkar for two years. They got married on February 10, 2005,[5] and have a son named Gautham Krishna.[6] He has a twitter account, of which he opened up on April 16, 2010 and likes to spend most of his free time on Twitter.
Career
1999-2004
He began his career as a child artist. He made his feature film debut in 1999 in Raja Kumarudu, opposite Preity Zinta, directed by K. Raghavendra Rao. The film opened well at the box office and is commercially successful whilst earning Mahesh the Nandi Award for Best Male Debut.[7][8] In 2000, he appeared in Yuvaraju directed by Y.V.S Chowdary, and in Vamsi. Both movies declared as average at the box office.[9] In the year 2001, he starred with Sonali Bendre in Krishna Vamsi's Murari emerged a critical as well as huge commercial success.[10] His performance as murari was widely praised by critics and earned him the Nandi Special Jury Award. He played a cow boy role in his next movie Takkari Donga opened to positive reviews.[11] Although the film did not do so well at the box-office, Mahesh performance earned him with the Nandi Special Jury Award. Later that year, he starred with Arthi Agarwal in Bobby directed by Sobhan commercially unsuccessful at the box-office.
His next film Okkadu (2003) opposite Bhoomika Chawla, produced by M.S. Raju and directed by Gunasekhar was critically acclaimed and a biggest box-office success of that year whilst earning his first Filmfare Best Actor Award (Telugu).[12][13][14] The film collected a share of ₹ 7 crores in its opening week in Andhra Pradesh.[15] In the same year, he appeared in Teja's film Nijam was critically acclaimed and earned him Nandi Award for Best Actor.[16] In 2004 release, he paired up with Amisha Patel in Naani (film is about a teenage boy who is aged to adulthood by a scientist), is a remake of tamil film (New) directed by S. J. Suryaah performed poorly at the box office. Later that year, he again appeared in Gunasekhar movie Arjun opposite Shriya Saran did well at the box office and earned him another Nandi Special Jury Award.
2005-Present
His 2005 film with Trisha Krishnan, titled Athadu directed by Trivikram Srinivas was declared sensational hit in india as well as in USA and became one of the highest grossers of the year in tollywood [17] for which he received second Nandi Award for best actor. He next appeared opposite Ileana D'Cruz in the action flick Pokiri (2006) directed and produced by Puri Jagannadh is a critically acclaimed and all time Block Buster. The film was a huge financial success, emerging the highest grossing Telugu film of all time in the year 2006 with ₹ 66.5 Crores. The film completed 100 days in as many as 200 centres in the andhra pradesh and neighbouring States, including 17 centers in Hyderabad alone and silver jubilee in a record 63 centres[18][19][20] In the same year, he again starred with Trisha in gunasekhar's film Sainikudu, opened well in india, ending up as an average grosser[21]
In October 2007, he appeared with Amrita Rao in Surender Reddy's Athidhi, was a commercial Hit.[22] The film opened with a gross collection of ₹ 12.5 crores in the first week of its release.[23] He next signed a film with Trivikram Srinivas titled Khaleja opposite Anushka Shetty. Mahesh Babu had planned to take a gap of six months before the release of his next film after Athidhi. But, due to unexpected circumstances, the film was postponed several times and the film took two years to be completed. The movie was released on 7 October 2010.[24] Despite its mixed reviews, the film collected over ₹ 30 crores in the first two weeks.[25] and ended up as an average film.[26][27][28]
