Development
In mid-2012 there were reports that a project titled Lucifer was in development, to be directed by Rajesh Pillai, scripted by Murali Gopy, starring Mohanlal and produced by Antony Perumbavoor of Aashirvad Cinemas, intended to be released in 2013.[4][5] Shortly, the project was confirmed by Pillai who said it is his dream come true to direct Mohanlal and the film will be a "mass entertainer" and a tribute to the actor; he added the filming would begin in 2013.[6] However in May 2013, Pillai said the production will not begin that year as planned since he will be busy with Motorcycle Diaries and Murali was working in Left Right Left, so they hopes to start the film by January 2014 and a discussion for the same will be held in June. He also disclosed Lucifer is a thriller film and its story has been developed.[7] In July 2013, it was reported Murali has begun screenwriting.[8] However, the plan did not follow through and Pillai moved on to do other projects.[9] He died of health issues in February 2016.[10] In a July 2016 interview, Murali revealed to The Hindu that he plans to work on the screenplay in between his other commitments.[11] Director was undecided.[12]
On 15 September 2016, actor Prithviraj Sukumaran announced that Lucifer would be his directorial debut.[13] Murali stated that Prithiviraj was interested in directing a film based on his screenplay and talked about it an year ago, besides, he was also inclined to cast Mohanlal in his directorial debut and that is why Murali decided to share the story idea of Lucifer to Prithviraj. Nevertheless, Murali denied the project is same as Pillai's Lucifer.[14][15] At the same time, in another interview he said he discussed the story with Mohanlal in 2012, but then the director was not fixed.[16] Prithviraj stated the story of Pillai's Lucifer is different and only the title has been adapted.[17][18] According to Prithviraj, "the thought behind the film and what the film can be" attracted him to the project.[19] Murali shared the idea while they were having a casual chat at the sets of Tiyaan (2016) in Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad.[20] Prithviraj was interested yet skeptical whether Mohanlal and Antony would agree the idea of a debutant directing Lucifer as "it was a story that any big filmmaker would say yes to". The next day Antony took off to Hyderabad for discussion and reached Mohanlal over phone and the project was set to motion.[21][22] Murali was planning to write the final draft of screenplay after completing his acting commitments in Tiyaan and Kammara Sambhavam.[14]
In December 2016, Mohanlal said Lucifer is still in its nascent stage and needs to be developed into a screenplay and sit for discussions, "the content has to be good and that's what the focus is right now".[23] In February 2017, Prithviraj stated they would begin the pre-production that year and filming would happen next year.[19][24] It was planned in May 2018.[15] On 2 April, Mohanlal, Prithviraj, Murali and Antony convened a press conference at Mohanlal's residence in Kochi to announce the official beginning of pre-production.[25] Prithviraj said the script has not been "fleshed out" and the rest of the cast would be decided after that.[26][27] Shortly after, Prithviraj bought a new apartment in Thevara as a work-space for scripting and pre-production works of Lucifer and his future projects; "I felt I needed a space to assemble my team. Do the research and develop the film. This place might well be known as Lucifer's office in future", he said.[28][29][30] In a June 2017 interview, Prithviraj stated that Lucifer should be released in 2019.[31] Murali told to The Hindu in October 2017 that he would take a break after acting in Kammara Sambhavam to script Lucifer and hopes to complete it by February 2018.[32] In December, Prithviraj said the scripting is progressing and the plans are to shoot the film by the end of May 2018 or beginning of June after he completes the first schedule of Aadujeevitham.[33]
Prithviraj and Murali narrated the final draft of screenplay to Mohanlal on 26 March 2018 on the sets of Odiyan, to which he gave positive feedback.[34] Location scouting began in April.[35] In June, Mohanlal told to The Times of India that the film would be shot in Kerala, Mumbai and in a foreign location. The team was on the verge of finalising the locations in Thiruvananthapuram by the end of the month. Prithviraj disclosed in a channel podcast that filming would begin on 18 July.[36][37][38] It was later updated as 16 July.[39][40] Close to the shoot of the film, Prithviraj hinted the film deals with politics.[41] The names of the technical crew was revealed in July when the first poster was released. It carries the tagline "blood, brotherhood, betrayal".[42] Lucifer comes under political thriller genre.[43]
Casting
In 2012 while Pillai was the director, his regular collaborator Kunchacko Boban's name was reported in the cast apart from Mohanlal. Responding to the news, Boban said he has not officially signed the film and is unaware of the role, however, it is possible he would be doing it as Rajesh wants him in all his films.[44] In August 2012, Pillai confirmed that Murali has been cast in a significant role[45] and only Mohanlal and Murali was decided on the cast as of May 2013.[46] In 2014, while conversing in the Tamil talk show Koffee with DD, Prithviraj told that Mohanlal and Manju Warrier are his "dream cast" if he ever directs a film.[47][48]
After Prithviraj was announced to be the director in September 2016, Murali said he is uncertain whether he would be acting in the film as it is too early to talk about the cast other than Mohanlal.[49] In January 2018, Madhusudhan Rao confirmed being cast in the film, who co-starred alongside Prithviraj in Adam Joan (2017) during which he was promised a role in Lucifer.[50] In the following month, Lena placed Lucifer in the list of her upcoming acting commitments.[51] Following unconfirmed reports about Manju Warrier's casting, in May, a source from the actress confirmed the news to The Times of India. However when asked, the production house stated that the casting process was progressing and is subject to changes.[52][53] In June, it was reported Saniya Iyappan would play Stephen's daughter role.[54][55] In early July, producer Antony revealed Hindi actor Vivek Oberoi is working in the film by expressing his gratitude in having him onboard.[56][57] Lucifer mark Oberoi's debut in Malayalam cinema, who took a month-long preparation for the role and appointed a diction coach to comprehend Malayalam language and pronunciation.[58] In the same month, Prithviraj confirmed his brother Indrajith Sukumaran in the cast.[59][60]
Director Fazil plays a cameo role as a priest, Father Nedumbally. Fazil who was acting in a film after 34 years, commented that he agreed to take the role as he could not refuse Prithviraj's offer.[61] His role is of a mentor to Stephen.[62] Tovino Thomas, Sachin Khedekar, Kalabhavan Shajohn, Saikumar, Baiju, Baburaj, Shivaji Guruvayoor, John Vijay, Nandhu, Sunil Sukhada, Thara Kalyan, Maala Parvathi are among other actors cast in the film.[citation needed]
Filming
Principal photography began on 15 July 2018 with a customary pooja function held at Springdale Heritage resort in Vandiperiyar, Idukki district. Sujith Vaassudev was the director of photography.[63][64] Mohanlal was expected to join in the coming days.[65] Pouly Valsan was called for a 6-day shoot.[66] Filming happened at Kuttikkanam and Vandiperiyar areas during the early schedule.[67][68] It also took place at Thodupuzha in that month.[69] Thereafter, it was scheduled to be held in Thiruvananthapuram from 6 August to 15 September for a 40-day shoot.[70] Mohanlal's first shot was with Fazil.[71] Fazil had two scenes with Mohanlal and shot for three days.[61] Stephen's car used in the film is a Hindustan Landmaster inscribed with the number 666 in the vehicle registration plate.[72] Filming took place in Vandiperiyar in early August and was planned to last till 10 August.[73] The schedule also took place at Kochi, Ernakulam district before moving to Thiruvananthapuram.[74] Around 2000 junior artists participated in the shoot at Ernakulam.[75]
Filming was charted at 25 locations in Thiruvananthapuram district, beginning at Government College for Women from 12 August.
