George Harrison (1943–2001) was an English musician who recorded many songs during his career. During his lifetime, he released eleven studio albums, two compilation albums, two live albums, and many singles as a solo artist. After his death in 2001, a final studio album, two singles, two compilation albums, and four box sets have been released as of 2017. Originally gaining fame as the lead guitarist of the Beatles, Harrison began incorporating Indian instrumentation into their music that helped broaden the horizons of his bandmates and their English and American audiences.[1] Before the break-up of the Beatles, Harrison released two solo albums: the mainly instrumental Wonderwall Music, soundtrack to the 1968 film, Wonderwall,[2] and Electronic Sound in 1969, an experimental album that features two lengthy pieces performed on a Moog synthesizer.[3]
After the Beatles' break-up, Harrison released the triple album All Things Must Pass in 1970.[4][5] Backed by the highly commercial and critically successful single "My Sweet Lord",[6] the album was a major commercial success[7][8] and received almost universal acclaim from critics.[5][9] According to Robert Rodriguez, the album introduced the world to Harrison's talent as a songwriter, hidden for years behind Lennon and McCartney.[10] A year later, Harrison organised the Concert for Bangladesh, a charity event created to help raise money for refugees during the Bangladesh Liberation War.[11] A soundtrack album and concert film of the event was released in 1972.[12] Harrison's follow-up to All Things Must Pass, Living in the Material World, was released in 1973.[13] Backed by the successful single, "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)",[14] the album continued Harrison's array of commercial success[15] and critical praise.[16] His success would diminish however, as his 1974 North American tour received mixed-to-negative reviews;[17] the subsequent album Dark Horse received the worst reviews of Harrison's career,[18] and 1975's Extra Texture (Read All About It) was received the same way, albeit slightly more positively than Dark Horse.[19] Extra Texture was Harrison's last release on the Apple record label.[20]
Harrison's first release on the new Dark Horse label, Thirty Three & 1/3, was released in 1976, backed by the lead single "This Song".[21] Widely considered a return to form for Harrison,[22] the album earned him the strongest reviews since All Things Must Pass.[23] The album was also a commercial success, outselling both Dark Horse and Extra Texture in America.[24][25] Harrison's next album, the warmly received self-titled George Harrison, was released in 1979.[26][27] The album featured the sequel to "Here Comes the Sun", "Here Comes the Moon",[28] and "Not Guilty",[29] originally recorded during sessions for the "White Album".[30] Harrison's next album, Somewhere in England, was released in 1981 and featured "All Those Years Ago", a tribute to recently deceased former Beatle John Lennon.[31] A year later, Gone Troppo was released, and featured the "White Album" outtake, "Circles".[32] It received dismissive reviews from critics and was not a commercial success.[33] After Gone Troppo, Harrison took a five-year hiatus.[34]
In 1987, Harrison made his comeback with Cloud Nine.[35] Backed by Harrison's successful rendition of James Ray's "Got My Mind Set on You" and the Beatles' tribute "When We Was Fab", the album was a commercial success and received positive reviews from critics.[35][36] After Cloud Nine, Harrison formed the supergroup the Traveling Wilburys in 1988 with Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, and Bob Dylan.[37] The group released two studio albums before disbanding in 1992.[37] In 1994, Harrison collaborated with former Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr for The Beatles Anthology project.[38] Harrison died of lung cancer seven years later in November 2001.[39] His final album, Brainwashed, was posthumously released in 2002 and was completed by his son Dhani Harrison and Jeff Lynne.[40]
