Revision as of 23:03, 27 February 2009
The following is a table of countries of the Earth compiled from three separate authorities:
- The International Organization for Standardization (ISO),
- The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), and
- The United Nations (UN).
Table of Countries
The following table contains information about the countries of the Earth. Entries include:
- All 246 countries designated by International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard ISO 3166
- All 252 Internet country code top-level domains (ccTLD) currently assigned by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA)
- All 192 current member states of the United Nations (UN), and
- All 16 Non-Self-Governing Territories designated by the UN
Each entry contains the following information:
- Flag and common name – This column contains an enlargeable image of the country's flag and a hyperlink to the main article about the country..
- Official name – This column contains the official name of the country.
- Autonomy – If the country is a sovereign state, this column contains the year the country was admitted to the United Nations or an explanation of its status. If the country is a dependent state, this column contains the flag and common name of its parent state.
- ISO 3166 name – This column contains the name of the country as it appears in ISO standard ISO 3166.
- A2 – This column contains the two-character country code from ISO standard ISO 3166-1.
- A3 – This column contains the three-character country code from ISO standard ISO 3166-1.
- N3 – This column contains the three-digit country code from ISO standard ISO 3166-1.
- Sub – This column contains a hyperlink to a list of the country subdivision codes as they appear in the ISO standard ISO 3166-2.
- ccTLD – This column contains the Internet country code top-level domain as currently assigned by the IANA.
United Nations Permanent Observers
- Palestine – The United Nations General Assembly has granted Permanent Observer status to the Palestinian National Authority as representatives of Palestine. The Palestinian National Authority nominally administers the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and Gaza, however Israel aggressively asserts its control of these territories.
- Vatican City – The United Nations General Assembly has granted Permanent Observer status to the Holy See. Vatican City is a church-state headed by the leader of the world's largest religious organization. Vatican City is a remnant of the Papal States. A majority of the world's countries recognize Vatican City as a sovereign state in deference to the Roman Catholic Church, although Italy actively enforces its laws within Vatican City.
IANA extensions to ISO 3166
All IANA assigned country code top-level domains conform to ISO standard ISO 3166-1 two-character country codes with the following three exceptions:
- Ascension Island .ac ccTLD – The Maintenance Agency for ISO 3166 country codes has reserved this two-character country code for future use for Ascension Island, but has not assigned this code. ISO 3166-1 regards Ascension Island as a part of Saint Helena (.sh ccTLD).
- European Union .eu ccTLD – The Maintenance Agency for ISO 3166 country codes has reserved this two-character country code for future use for the European Union, but has not assigned this code.
- United Kingdom .uk ccTLD – The IANA assigned the .uk ccTLD as an alternative to the .gb ccTLD which is no longer issued for the United Kingdom. The Maintenance Agency for ISO 3166 country codes has reserved this two-character country code for future use for the United Kingdom, but has not assigned this code.
The IANA has ordered the following three obsolete ccTLDs to be phased out:
- Soviet Union .su ccTLD – The .su ccTLD is still active and taking new registrations.
- East Timor .tp ccTLD – The .tp ccTLD is still active but not taking new registrations.
- Yugoslavia .yu ccTLD – The .yu ccTLD is still active but scheduled for retirement in 2009.
The following three ccTLDs are not active, but an alternate ccTLD is available:
- Bouvet Island .bv ccTLD — Norway .no ccTLD used instead
- Svalbard and Jan Mayen .sj ccTLD — Norway .no ccTLD used instead
- United States Minor Outlying Islands .um ccTLD — United States .us ccTLD used instead

In 1993, Czechoslovakia split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Later in 1993, the IANA assigned the .cz ccTLD for the Czech Republic, assigned the .sk ccTLD for Slovakia, and stopped new .cs registrations. In 1995, the IANA retired the .cs ccTLD.
